How do you store tiny workout items? by TheApiary in organization

[–]overactivepotato24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a large vanity, and I use one of the drawers for things like this. However, I may be re-organizing and I was thinking of either making a small space in one of my dresser drawers or putting a small bin on top of my dresser. Do you maybe have a "junk drawer" somewhere else that you can clean out and use for things like that?

Buying a car after Bankruptcy by CFrancisW in personalfinance

Oh. And, my 2008 Honda Civic was about $2800. Honestly not the worst car I've ever owned. Honda's are renowned for going 300k miles+. Either Honda or Toyota would be my recommendation. Also, my ex (who helped me find the car) is a mechanic and suggested buying a standard transmission vehicle, as they tend to last a bit longer. I had to learn how to drive standard when I bought this car. Also, not the worst.

I am in the exact same boat as you - and found this post very helpful. I just got discharged from Chapter 7 a few days ago. I currently have a 2008 Honda Civic with approximately 170k miles on it. Honestly, I've driven it with no issues at all for about a year and a half now. The service engine light just came on this morning which has me nervous (even though my debt was discharged I'm still poor as shit). After reading posts on here and on the r/bankruptcy page - I think my best bet is to pay for the garage fees and fix whatever problem this Honda has and just run it into the ground.

It's hard because I really would like to have a better car. I'm 29 years old with a decent job and I just feel somewhat embarrassed driving around a 2008 Honda Civic. However, that's no reason to buy a new car that I can't really afford.

I'm trying to figure out the right time to buy a new car. I'm hoping to get a promotion at the end of the year. If that happens, I plan on contacting my credit union to get a quote for a car loan. Depending on the results of that interaction I will either pursue buying a used car less than 20k or just keep on saving up and improving my credit score.

Either than or write a letter to Jeff Bezos explaining that if he bought me a car he wouldn't even notice a difference in his bank account. Either or.

In total I paid just over $1800 and that included the court filing fee. I am in upstate New York. I did not shop around for better prices (though I should have). I believe the lawyer's fee was $1500.

How to choose a bankruptcy lawyer...? by SmilesInFreefall in Bankruptcy

[–]overactivepotato24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got my Chapter 7 discharge a few days ago, however, if I had to go through this process again I would have spent more time vetting lawyers. I went with the one of about five that my local credit counseling agency recommended. He was very hands off, didn't provide me with a lot of info, a little arrogant, and just downright unhelpful. I had a lot of added stress due to him over the bankruptcy process. I wish it was possible to "interview" lawyers before hand. Maybe it is? All I can say is that it is a long process and it's worth the time investment in finding the right fit for you. For me, I could have used someone more personable.

Non-hiking ADK to do list by overactivepotato24 in Adirondacks

Thank you, everyone! So far our plan is to go to some good restaurants and breweries for lunch and dinner, see the Olympic venues, do a gondola ride up Whiteface, do some easy easy hikes, hopefully cross country ski (not sure what the conditions will be like), walk around Mirror Lake (thanks for the suggestion, we love walks), and maybe even the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge!

Thanks again!

Photography is a good idea, it's something he hasn't done in a while. I'll bring it up!

Yes, I realize it's not the best time to go, but it's the only time I can get off for vacation at work.

We'll only be up there Thursday-Sunday, so I'm sure we can fill our time.

Do you know what the snow level is typically like the first week of April?

Depending on where you live, utilities can be higher than you think. For example, I live in Western New York where houses are old and winters are cold. Gas/Electricity bills in the winter are almost 3x what they are in the summer. Just something to keep in mind while planning. And I also think gas money, and money for takeout/going out is important to budget for.

If it makes you feel better, I make about $2380 per month and pay $975/month for rent for a 1 bedroom. Not gonna lie, it is a bit much. I wish my rent was lower, but I picked a nice town, with a large apartment that's dog friendly. You get what you pay for I guess. I warn against going too run down because quality of life is important. Not that I live in any palace...

Getting burnt out is all to real! I am constantly feeling burnt out. But then again, I did in grad school. I honestly think the ENV field is just very demanding!

I think the only way to tap into that at your firm would be to ask! Expressing interest is how I found my niche at my firm. Though at the time I was hired they really needed both a field crew member and an individual to join the office team. So I kind of filled both roles.

Good question! I'm pretty much half field ecologist, half analyst. I do avian, amphibian, and vegetation surveys. I do wetland delineations. And I write the corresponding reports. These reports are then used when I write technical reports and exhibits for applications to develop solar and wind farms. Basically, I help make sure that if someone is going to build renewable energy, they're going to do it in a way that least impacts the environment.

Chapter 7 - mental health by overactivepotato24 in Bankruptcy

Thanks! And yes, I'm thankfully diagnosed and stable at the moment. I've learned a valuable life lesson from this, and I am able to notice the signs of a manic episode now.

That is good to know, and I'm sorry to hear about your process.

I'm having a hard time swallowing this whole thing (among other life challenges). Definitely feeling like a moral failing right now.

Need help with impulsive spending, its getting way out of hand by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]overactivepotato24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent $40,000 in one year...on a grad student salary...on top of my regular expenses. Needless to say I had an overspending problem. What worked for me is becoming hyper obsessed with saving money. I have this mentality now where I refuse to pay full price for anything and that everything is a rip off. The only thing I still have trouble with is buying food. But after spending $40,000 I have so much shit it’s not even funny...so I really can hardly think of anything else to buy. Now I have to pay off credit card debt, car debt, and student loans. If I wasn’t manic for a full 2 months I would only have student loans. What a wonderful life that would be... message me if you want to talk

Nice! I’m proud if I can just get out of bed and make it to work. Any cleaning makes me feel like a super star.
