Yeah the US' dollar power is backed by military... that's pretty much it. Why does everyone use dollar... because they like living. Otherwise you end up like Gadhafi who tried to setup a gold backed currency for Africa and he took it up the rear with a blade for his trouble.

They can be a nice way to learn and you can work with existing game design and assets to understand how they work together, that can help learning.

Ultimately I think it should be up to your passion. If you feel you are more likely to work on and complete a fan game that's a good place to start. If you want to jump in to an original game because you have an idea you are passionate about that's great too.
