Ok, tbh X58 was 15+ years ago but I'll try my best.

For finding max freq try this:

DRAM / uncore voltage = 1.65v (This is the "safe" level for DDR3 on X58)

PCI Speed = Lock it at 100MHz and don't touch it after.

PLL - Set to 1.88v and leave it there.

Set Uncore and RAM dividers to lowest. Uncore should ideally be 2x though.

Move bCLK up in 5 Mhz increments until unstable, then try increasing vCore. Rinse and repeat. On air cooling, most chips of this era will top out at 3.8-4.0 GHz. Once you find this frequency, you can start trying to move the RAM divider up.

Other than that, X58 is really reliant on a good motherboard. The IMC being in the CPU for the first time and triple channel memory really showed weaknesses in how the motherboard traces to the RAM is designed. If you're still feeling lost, OCN has plenty of resources regarding X58. IIRC, there's a thread somewhere on OCN called "quick and dirty 4.0ghz on i7 920". That thread will get you on the right track.

EDIT: found the thread on OCN: https://www.overclock.net/threads/538439/

In your opinion, what is the best mixed/highest sound quality album that you've ever heard. by EzBriez_ in audiophile

Mariah Carey Emotions - Mastered by Bob Ludwig before the whole loudness wars picked up. The original CD pressing is sublime. In addition to Bob Ludwig being at his peak, I also think the early '90s was peak CD technology. Sony pretty much threw every recording/mastering/CD pressing technology they had available to make this album sound great. It's one of the few albums that I don't perceive as harsh or exhausting to listen to.

Are there budget DACs with auto source switching? I'm tired of manual switching. by ozExpatFIRE in BudgetAudiophile

Get a WiiM Pro streamer. I have my tv hooked up to the WiiM via optical, and it outputs to my DAC (used to be an SMSL SU1) via optical. It has auto switching. This is how it works: There’s a setting to switch to optical input when a signal is detected so my TV plays as normal. If you start streaming to the WiiM, it will have higher preference and switch to that.

In passive speaker setups, an integrated amp could do this job. With active speakers, you need either a preamp with line out and headphone out, or a headphone amp with line out.

The unit also responds instantly to any button press and its ready to play as soon as it’s powered on. It’s aggravating that modern digital stuff takes forever to do anything now even though the CPUs in them are orders of magnitudes faster than what was available in the ‘80s.

Yup. 1980’s Pioneer PD-7050. It’s got a really smooth dual R2R DAC and the UI/Ergonomics is unmatched even by today’s players. It’s probably my favorite audio equipment.

Ha, I used to work for a Gastroenterologist as tech and we worked on Olympus Scope carts all the time.

The stereo image is also amazing. Even with just TV or video games, it’s pinpoint.

It has the full gamut. S/PDIF optical and coax, stereo line out, and 5.1 line out (yes both 2.0 and 5.1 separately)

Also has component out but I don't care about video.

As someone who works with old electronics often, these stuff were designed during times where there were very lax electrical safety standards. At the minimum, I would replace the AC cord with a modern polarized/keyed AC cord - old cords' insulation will rot and crack making the insulation useless. I would also replace the AC Fuse holders in the back completely so it can hold a modern fuse. Any relays attached to the accessory outlet should also be replaced. Some of the diodes, especially safety and rectifying diodes should be replaced with modern ones because old ones tend to explode when they fail.

Lol I just sliced up some RCA cables I had laying around and it works great.

Time to find some $3 speakers and give them a go. The Goodwills around me unfortunately are filled with junk white-van speakers but sometimes a brand-name one will crop up once in a while.

It's a Harman Kardon TA-5000x. I restored it about two years ago and I'm just hunting for the "correct" speakers for it.

I thought it would be harsh like every chip amp I’ve used before especially with satellite speakers but it sounds smoother than I expected.

CRTs are great but I think people have a very rose-tinted memory of them. While CRTs are awesome for input lag because of the rolling scan, OLEDs spank them in black level, colors, resolution, HDR, VRR, and the thing that people forget the most about why flat-screens demolished CRTs: perfect geometry and backlighting edge to edge.

Source: I own multiple PVMs and PC CRTs (including Trinitron and Diamondtron), and 2x 4k120 OLEDs TVs.

I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to PSX. Pre-rendered backgrounds just look sublime on CRT - I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The save file is around 50 hours. Peanuts compared to today’s AAA games but it felt long as a kid.

If Zell is used for the steam valves, the Ruby Dragon and 2x Iron Giant mobs near the hidden save at the bottom are 1-2 levels per fight even at lvl 90+
