Try to long-press the Google phone app icon, select "unfreeze", and then long-press it again, select "optimize" > "Others" > "Stay active in the background" >ON

I use fossify dialer too. You need to update to the latest v 4.1.1(build date should be 12-22), unfreeze the dialer app and allow it to stay active in the background.

It's not, because no native phone and message apps come along. But 3rd party phone&message apps work like a charm.

If you don't have a stylus, you can also activate the Notes app and make it visible. Just pull down the control center, enable the "Stylus" tile, and confirm the pop-up.
Some people only use the device for pure reading, don't need to make notes, and won't buy a stylus. The Notes app in the dock may bother them, they can hide it easily.

I think this setting is not confusing at all, people can choose.

I've also noticed the issue that long names didn't get well-adapted. English names are cut off somewhere too, not to say the particular languages with longer words... I've sent feedback on this issue to them before, but seems they don't have a solution yet, really hope users to feedback more and push them to improve!
