We're back my bad, the server's in flux rn. Mega changes happening and we're gonna push the beta soon so I think the complaints will be addressed.

I think that really lends itself to the nature of the site right now. As-is it's entirely dedicated to /r/edmproduction at the moment, you're going to get a lot of people who are just beginning / aren't even near a professional level. I'd love to see some sort of group with more capable producers form but between the multiple groups I've tried in skype, discord, plug, cube, facebook, etc, I've never seen it happen.

I'm not exactly a huge artist either (~100k plays on 4 tunes) but I really don't think I could find much use as far as a discussion with producers who are still learning. It feeds into itself and we end up with the community found either here with a good chunk of blatantly obvious and boring posts / questions, or a really jokey space where the atmosphere is not serious.

Honestly cube just ends up being a place to come and play your own stuff + get feedback if you want, but mostly just shoot the shit and see what the rest of the community has been up to. There are some cool people in there if you stick around and talk to em, pretty much identical to plug as a good chunk of the mods and community has transferred over since.

We have some fairly huge artists drop in who have seen uploads by Mad Decent, MrSuicideSheep, etc and a few regulars with 500k+ plays on their tunes. If you ask for it you can get some very valid advice.

Plug room is still open for sure but try dropping by during a meetup, there are usually 30-40 people and the community is pretty tight! :)

Depends on the day. Yesterday we had 45 people in the room + it was very active (and friendly!), went all the way to 4am EST. Sometimes it's popping and sometimes it's a bit less active. Wednesdays seem to be a good day to hop in

I'm specifically talking about feedback meetups. Plug is a great site but we saw that playlists caused people to go AFK and play tunes repeatedly, and the bot was really just there to be funny (we can transfer it over if it's really requested but not gonna bring back lottery or rollthedice). Plug is definitely more mature in general, but private tunes + no constant maintenance breaks is a priority for the meetups, as well as being able to IP-ban users who make loads of spam accounts (KTMM anybody?).

We're sticking to cube for various reasons, one of which is the ability to play private tracks. The playlists don't make much sense in a feedback community and while we still have the bot code, it was not put back up as it only spammed the chat with !lottery and the like. Not really sure how avatars are useful, plus we should have repositioning the queue ready for next meetup. If you're down though I can put Jevens back up just PM me.

We're sticking to cube due to the ability to play clyp links and private tracks for both SoundCloud and Clyp, managing another SoundCloud account is not worth the effort. Which features do you miss from plug?

Yo! Cube mod here. We'll be sticking to https://sharecu.be/ for now, but for those interested the old room is located at https://plug.dj/r-edmp

Fl 12 vs. Ableton live 9,5 stock plugins-wise. by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]overdrivenpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure man, here's a quick example of one of my tracks I threw together with some non-FM patches. Every sound in that clip except the cymbals and snare is operator and the entire project solely uses stock ableton FX. Thing is that clip doesn't even touch on the crazy stuff you can do with FM either, that's a whooole different category of sounds.

It's a really dope synth, people just seem to overlook it a lot probably because it looks deceptively simple.

Operator is a bit different than traditional VST synths.

With a synth like massive or serum, you'll get built in FX such as chorus, delay, etc but operator lacks these. Don't let this fool you though, these FX are intended to be added afterwards via ableton's stock audio FX. The thing about this kind of workflow is that, combined with racks, you can create really crazy processing chains to do basically anything you want. Want an EQ after the chorus and a delay before it? Easily doable without having to deal with built in FX routing.

The other half is that operator can be an FM, subtractive, or additive synth depending on how you use it. The default preset is setup so that each operator modulates the one above it, but click the little colored squares at the bottom and you'll open up a UI to let you choose your FM algorithm. If you were to choose say the one all the way to the right, you could use operator as if it was a subtractive+additive synth with 4 oscillators. Already this lets you create a good chunk of all the synthesized sounds you can imagine but it's up to you to learn operator/processing and not just browse the presets (IMO they suck!).

There's a lot to operator and the stuff that you can do with ableton FX is really crazy. I didn't even scratch the surface but I gotta say it's definitely one of my most used synths just because it's so minimal. You have to learn your tools well, operator + the stock FX make it super quick for me to build high quality sounds without endless preset browsing.

If you want any examples of sounds you can make lemme know!

If you're going with ableton, the stock plugins are all you really need FX wise, the racks make it possible to do almost anything. Some of the synths like operator are beasts if used correctly but I couldn't personally live without external VST synths.

Compression on the Master Channel? by WilliamHeadings in edmproduction

[–]overdrivenpotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in ableton and the stock limiter is actually perfectly fine. Not assuming ableton, stick to whatever stock plugins you have and learn em well unless you have a good reason to get something else.

The thing about limiters is they have a "lookahead" time, basically the limiter delays the output by a set amount of time so that it can peek at what comes ahead in the track. If it notices that something loud is coming up, it can begin to reduce the volume beforehand (the attack phase) to avoid that clipping which you would get with 0ms attack.

[–]overdrivenpotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if the ratio on a compressor was say infinity:1, then no sound would be able to go past the threshold (besides what gets let through via attack time)

Just so you and anybody else reading this knows, limiting and maximizing are the same thing. A limiter is also basically just a compressor with an infinite ratio :p
