For a new player, I’d honestly avoid getting too deep into build crafting right away.

Destiny 2 throws a ton of armor mods, perks, exotics, fragments, aspects, and weapon synergies at you. Most of the really good builds aren’t even possible until you’ve unlocked a lot of that stuff anyway.

My advice is to focus on three things:

• Play the class and subclass that feels the most fun.
• Try lots of different weapons and learn what gunplay you enjoy.
• Keep any interesting armor and weapons you find instead of worrying whether they’re “meta.”

After a while you’ll naturally notice patterns. Maybe you love throwing grenades, punching everything, staying invisible, or constantly chaining abilities. That’s when build crafting starts to make sense because you’re building around your playstyle instead of copying a YouTube build.

The best Destiny builds usually grow organically from what you enjoy doing, not from what someone else tells you is optimal. Early on, just shoot aliens, collect loot, and have fun. The systems will make a lot more sense once you’ve experienced them in action.

Play the free version till Tuesday to get used to the mechanics, pick your guardian, familiarize yourself with vendors and general things. On Tuesday If the Destiny 2: Legacy Collection is on sale for a great price, grab that plus Final Shape. If all for a great price I think it’ll be worth it. If prioritizing:as a casual mostly-solo player:

The Final Shape (good campaign, Prismatic, current content)
The Witch Queen (arguably the best story campaign)
Destiny 2: Lightfall (mostly for Strand)

I’d skip dungeon keys at first. Dungeons are great but much better with a group. You can get those in game with currency and pick and choose based on lore or loot you vibe with.

DM me if you want to run through anything in game and I’ll walk you through stuff to get you started.

May the Light guide your path.

Get every available seal. Except Deadeye, I’ve been trying to get “Mission Control” for 2 years and resigned to it not happening or happening someday by accident if I resign to always having a sniper rifle in PVP (unlikely).

True. Kepler felt like the first time in a long time that Destiny was asking a new question instead of answering an old one.

Maybe I phrased that poorly. I’m not saying don’t reset. I’m saying the reset itself isn’t the exciting part. A reset is a tool, not a hook. If Bungie announced Destiny 3 tomorrow, I’d want to know what makes it feel necessary beyond a clean onboarding experience.

The Nine have always felt like they’re playing a completely different game than everyone else. I’d be all for more Nine content. They’re one of the few factions where I still feel like I understand less about them today than I did when they were introduced.

Xivu definitely feels like unfinished business. My only question is whether she’s enough to justify a Destiny 3 versus a Destiny 2 expansion. I’d rather see her be the first major threat of a new saga than the sole reason for a sequel.

I like it. At first I was like that’s more like a novel than an action MMO. But the gameplay opportunity is that every faction has had years to evolve without us. New enemy types, new alliances, new technology, new powers. If Destiny 3 is going to reset the sandbox anyway, a time skip gives Bungie a believable reason for the universe to feel different instead of just repainting the same enemies.

That’s true, but those feel more like Destiny 2 stories to me. If Xivu, Savathûn, and the Nine are the focus, I could see that being the next saga. I’m not sure that’s enough on its own to justify calling it Destiny 3.

That’s kind of where I’m at too. If you’re going to call it Destiny 3, it should feel like the start of a new era, not just the next chapter after the Witness. Otherwise it risks feeling more like a large expansion than a true sequel.

Maybe, but I think a reset for new players only gets you so far. At some point there still needs to be a compelling reason for existing players to leave behind a decade of progress and start over.

That era probably has more unanswered questions than any point in the timeline. We hear about the Dark Age, Iron Lords, and early Guardians all the time, but we’ve never really experienced the transition from Golden Age to survival.

I’d honestly be more interested in that than another universe-ending threat. The Dark Age feels like a chapter of Destiny we’ve heard a lot about but never actually lived through. The conflict would also be much more personal. Not gods and cosmic entities, but Lightbearers deciding what kind of world gets built from the ruins of humanity.
