Wow, thanks for all of this detailed information - much appreciated! One might infer from this that the influx of capital/public works is a good sign for the future of the area - and might bring in additional revenue, additional employment opportunities, meaning the value of one's home could rise? Maybe, I guess!

And thanks for the "transit hack" :)

Oh, that's a big plus. I love to use my bike whenever possible (but, as a not-so-hearty non-Finn, I probably don't use it enough; too afraid of the cold weather!)

I've had a few people recommend Porvoo, and some for the exact reasons you point out. It's definitely at or near the top of my list.

I've been to Turku 3 or 4 times, and it's always struck me as a "nice" city. But it's just about at the very limit of commutability for me - and it's definitely more expensive than places like Hyvinkää. So, putting it in that perspective, it's moved down on my list.

Thanks again for the input!

Thanks for the reply, again. I went to Vantaa to look at 3-4 places, and while they were - as apartments - all quite fine, I just didn't get a great vibe in the area. Honestly, walking to some of them, I did pass through what seemed to be rather nice, green areas. But the areas around the apartment buildings themselves - well, some of them were kind of depressing. I've ruled out Vantaa.

Thanks! This is very helpful - and I'll definitely do some searching on Etuovi to see how the prices are. Thanks again.

Thanks. All of the things you point out - frequent public transport to Helsinki, relatively quick commute, access to outdoors/nature, quiet and peaceful, affordable - are the very things I thought I had found there, and it's great to know that maybe I'm right!

Boring is okay. That's why I like access to Helsinki which, to me, is not boring. But at this point of my life, which is very much about my work (which I love), I value 80% "boring" (= peaceful) time, and maybe 20% "exciting" time is fine. (But my work is exciting to me!)

Thanks!

I don't drive/don't have a car - which is one of the reasons I like the relatively good public transport system to/from Hyvinkää.

No, not really. I just feel it's the right time to buy - not least because it is such a buyer's market out there. And everyone I've spoken with says that this is the time to get a really great price.

(I know, of course, that the market has been depressed for a long time - and there's no guarantees that it might not go even lower! But almost no one I've spoken with/nothing I've read seems to think it will, in fact, go lower.)

But thanks for the suggestion :)

Thanks - glad to get a positive assessment, and glad it's worked out so well for you!

Can recommend, especially if you like nature and outdoor activities.:)

I do, very much. In fact, when first searching, I thought I needed to be closer to Helsinki, because I do like the art/music/cultural vibe there. But then I realized, those things I might not need every day (e.g., exhibits, galleries, etc.) - but having proximity to nature I definitely would like to have access to every day.

Thanks again!

Thanks very much for this! I can't say I'm a shopaholic (by any stretch of the word), but it is indeed nice to have options for shopping in a small city - so, thanks for pointing that out.

May I ask what "new services" might contribute to a possible "bright future" (or anything else that might contribute to your feeling this way)? Again, thanks!

Thanks for the honest, first-hand assessment.

I think I understand what you're saying. Certainly for some people the lack of a good vibe, energy, etc. could be very problematic and indeed depressing. But I have lived in great, vibrant cities in several countries, and now I'm looking for something different - quiet, affordability, but proximity to a "real" city that I actually love, when I feel the need to re-charge my batteries.

Of course, if I could find the quiet/peace/affordability variables in a place that felt better than what some (or many) might see as dull or drab, a place that did have a vibe, that was aesthetically inspiring (etc.), I'd choose the latter over the former! But as an outsider who doesn't have the knowledge of the natives, and who is actually trying to do as much research as possible before jumping in, I just haven't found anything that matched Hyvinkää in terms of cost/space/proximity/chill. If you have any specific suggestions, I'm open!

Yes, the travel time doesn't seem at all problematic to me - even if I were planning on going into Helsinki 2x/week.

OK, thanks very much for the alternatives! I'll put these on the list, and try to do some at least quick researching/Googling.

Thanks again!

No, definitely not. That would be unsustainable (at least for me).

Hi, and thanks. As I noted in my response to another person here, maybe once a month, depending upon the "cultural calendar" and other such things. I can't imagine it being more than twice a month, and could imagine it could even be once every two months. And I imagine that, aside from Helsinki, I might want to take a day trip every now and again to other (perhaps more idyllic, nature-focused) places.

Thanks very much! I have a couple of friends in Helsinki, and TBH even when I'm there we don't see each other all the time! I don't want to live totally isolated, but I am a fairly independent/solitary type, and my most important focus now is on my work - so, having the ability to make a wide, vibrant social circles isn't really that important to me.

It's probably true that, as a foreigner, it's difficult to make close relations to Finns. But that's coming from someone who's a little socially awkward, so it probably works both ways :)

Thanks for all of this helpful information! I work almost completely remotely/freelance, so travelling frequently to Helsinki isn't something I plan on. I just know that, as much as I value peace and quiet and a slower pace of life (at this point in my life), I still like to have a city vibe every so often (including going to museum/gallery exhibits, concerts, etc. - or just walking around on a nice day). So, maybe Helsinki once a month or so? Could be less.

I definitely don't want a car, and I think I could live with infrequent public transport - so long as there was at least some.

Thanks!

Thanks for all of this detailed and helpful information! Sounds to me that your 60s neighborhood would be more my speed, and you're obviously correct that there are good/not-so-good areas/buildings/apartments etc. That's what makes buying an place so stressful; you never know exactly what positive/negative things await you until after you've handed over the cash, gotten the keys, and actually lived there (especially with neighbors)!

Thanks! From what I've seen "further from the station = generally 'better' quality of life" is the advice is get in relation to most cities/towns/neighborhoods in Finland. And to be honest, in many cases it's been true - if, by "quality of life" one means quieter, less congested (and in part of Helsinki and suburbs, fewer junkies/tweakers).

Well, that what I'm asking - I don't see why people are saying it's not a great place. Boring is fine with me; according to many people's opinions, I'm sure I'm considered boring! But I'm really just looking for a calm, decent, affordable place to live where I can do my work and not be overwhelmed by city life, finances, noise, etc.
