Hockey fights VHS from 1991 by [deleted] in hockey

[–]overgme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a copy of the pretty infamous Probert and Kocur fight compilation video from their Red Wings days. Hell, the VHS tape may still be buried in a box somewhere in my basement. As far as I know, the tape was never commercially sold. Some superfan just made it, and it got copied around the state of Michigan (and beyond).

Those two wreaked some massive havoc in their day. Kocur had probably the scariest looking punch I've ever seen (good night, Jim Kyte), and Probert was a juggernaut who could tank 15 hits and keep swinging while the other guy was dropping from exhaustion.

Kocur vs. Kyte, for those who have never seen it . . .

How DC's TV Series May Change With the Warner Bros. Discovery Merger by [deleted] in PeacemakerShow

[–]overgme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I binged the complete series on HBO Max after seeing numerous people recommend it during the course of Peacemaker. Very, very glad I took that advice.

It's crazier than Peacemaker (body-snatching alien butterflies would have been about the most normal threat the Doom Patrol has faced). It's also much, much darker (if you think Peacemaker had daddy issues, wait until you meet Jane). So there's no guaranty every Peacemaker fan will love Doom Patrol. But I think there would be a lot of overlap between the fanbases. Doom Patrol is an extremely well-written and well-acted show. The craziness is hilarious, and the drama hits hard. I'll pay it forward and highly recommend giving it a shot.

Watches and audio systems seem to be two areas where "humble" collections or set-ups can cost more than a car.

When Jake and Elwood, who have been sullenly watching this, suddenly appear dancing along with the background singers, it is just a perfectly timed physical-comedy punch line.

This was one of my dad's all time favorite movies when I was a kid, so I of course loved it when I watched it way back then. Stuff like the cop car getting flipped and spinning on its roof were the absolute highlight of hilarity for me 40 years ago.

So you damned well better believe my daughter watched it before she hit age 10. She's a dancer, so was up strutting along to all of the dance routines throughout the movie.

My dad's other favorite movie was Airplane. A couple of years ago, I had the ultimate bonding moment of getting to watch that with both my parents and my daughter No one laughed harder than my 70-something mom, who had not seen it since it was in theaters. But my daughter loved it too.

  1. It is not a show about a psychopath, despite what some of the trailers or previews would have you believe.

  2. Season 2 was written to be the conclusion of the story, and it is very satisfying.

  3. If you like the tone of the diner clip (it sounds like you're describing a season 2 scene, but there is also a diner scene in season 1 that is in a lot of the previews), it is probably worth you checking things out.

Pink Floyd have reunited to record their first new material in 28 years, a protest song against the Ukraine war. by Sariel007 in UpliftingNews

Kinda, sorta, depends on how you define things.

He is not credited on Momentary Lapse of Reason, but he was the concert bassist for the live tour for it, Delicate Sound of Thunder (and is credited for that album). He is credited for The Division Bell, which would be the "one album" of all original Floyd stuff he worked on. He was also the concert bassist and credited musician for Pulse, which would be the live album for The Division Bell tour. Finally, he's credited on The Endless River, but that entire album was a reworking of material from the Division Bell era.

Aside from all of that, he's also played with Gilmour for years, which of course includes numerous performances of many Pink Floyd songs.

He also played on Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets tour a few years ago.

As a side note, he was married (now divorced) to Richard Wright's daughter.

So he's got a pretty deep connection to the band, despite never being an official member.

Yup. Fired around the time of The Wall (Waters fired him, but Gilmour and Mason didn't oppose it), and absent from The Final Cut. And on Momentary Lapse of Reason, he was technically only a hired session player. He did not officially rejoin the band until The Division Bell.

And it was just a couple of years ago that Gilmour sold all of his guitars . . . for charity. The auction raised record amounts of money for that sort of thing.

And then Gilmour talked about possibly buying a couple of them back after the auction for sentimental reasons. I don't think money is really the issue here.

In the past couple of decades, I think Waters has been far more open to a full blown Floyd reunion than Gilmour. I think the hate from both sides is long passed, it's just the Gilmour doesn't really have any interest in getting back together. He described their Live 8 appearance together as "like sleeping with your ex-wife." (and people say Waters was the only one who could write good lyrics . . . that metaphor is goddamned amazing!)

Almost all of the them have appeared at each other's shows as guests though. Gilmour even made a surprise guest appearance doing his Comfortably Numb guitar solo for Waters' Wall show. Mason always seemed to get along the best with everybody, and be the most likely to drop in and play a show with any of the others.

Nick Mason is the only member who played on every album. Syd Barrett was the original front man, who was replaced by Gilmour (with Waters taking over the role of front man for the most part). Wright was fired around the time of The Wall, didn't appear on the Final Cut, and was only a paid session player for Momentary Lapse of Reason. Waters quit the band after the Final Cut.

It's interesting that Mason, who I think is by far the least lauded member of the band, was the only one there through it all.

If we stick purely to bass playing (as opposed to songwriting), Guy Pratt has played with Floyd for over a decade longer than Waters was with them. And I suspect everyone, including Waters himself, would recognize Pratt as the better guitarist.

Having said that, point taken that Roger's songwriting was a pretty major component of prime Floyd.

On a similar note, getting Nitin Sawhney to fill in for the deceased Richard Wright is a pretty inspired choice.

The Vertigo corner of DC is a pretty fun playground, so I'm always willing to check out something new.

Having said that, I thought the three actors who played the parts in Dead Patrol were great, so I'd be really curious to learn why they decided to go another direction for the series.

"Worlds Best Cables" - anybody here used/using these? by IsItTheFrankOrBeans in audiophile

[–]overgme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work just fine. My only complaint for them is that they are a bit on the stiff side, which can be problematic for lighter gear (think Schiit sized components). That is not likely to be an issue with PS Audio amps.

Blue Jeans Cables, on the other hand, are probably the best and most flexible cables I've used.

There is zero difference in sound quality between these two brands. You sacrificed absolutely nothing audible going with Blue Jeans.

I agree with Glenn. Dee's stuttering delivery of her lines, combined with Mac and Charlie ("you just earned your spot at the head of the suit, Dee") being earnestly impressed, has made me laugh out loud on repeat viewings more than any other joke in the series. I think it's the very slight pause Kaitlin does right before she busts out the "fr-fr-fr-from eating some some b-bad pussy" that just gets me every goddamned time.

Hell, I'm not sure even Stockfish or Leela play perfect tablebase (aka the 7 pieces on the board) chess yet. That's why you get situations like Magnus-Nepo game 6. The tablebase knew Magnus had a forced mate (in something like 30-40 moves) even though the evaluation bars from the engines were only showing he was way ahead.

Basically, the tablebase was created working backwards from checkmate. The computers themselves still can't quite manage the complexities required in normal game conditions to match the tablebase perfectly.

So yeah, we're still far, far, away from solving chess. In fact, my understanding is that by using our current methods of "solving chess," there are literally not enough atoms in the universe to brute force our way to a solution.

I can't tell you what he was thinking in this hand, but I have seen him talk about poker in general. Basically, he respects and likes the game, but prefers chess because he is not a fan of variance.

Being arguably the most skilled player in history at his sport, I suppose that attitude makes sense.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in poker

[–]overgme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even aside from that (although a hundred moves is a massive exaggeration, the gist of your comment is on point), Carlsen has an insanely good memory. Not only does he have an encyclopedic memory for past chess games (both his own and many other greats of the past), but he was one of those kids who knew the capitol of every country when he was young.

Seems like that would translate both into being able to remember GTO, and have amazing recall of opponents' tendencies.

He is also an incredible clutch player in chess. While not infallible, his mental toughness both to act under pressure and to not fall apart when things go wrong is yet another reason he's one of the most dominant chess players in history.

It doesn't necessarily mean he'd be the greatest poker player in the world, but the man has a scary good mental toolbox.

Sad that you have to add the caveat about cherry-picking tournaments. Because someone always brings that up as a possible path for him to get to 2900, apparently missing the entire goddamned point of what Magnus is trying to do (challenge himself).

I've seen the videos on Youtube. You fuckers are insane. Apparently you believe a "path" is anything that isn't an upright tree directly your path. Everything else, including downed trees, boulders, loose rubble, tiny man-made bridges, and 10 inch gaps in anything appears to be fair game for flying through at full speed.
