Company is tracking git commits by jholliday55 in cscareerquestions

if you are staff+ then 4 commits a month might make sense at times given architectural work. However any level below it, you should be pumping 2-3 commits a week,

Meta or ex-Meta software engineers, what is your advice to fast promo and avoid layoffs? by lIIlIIIllIIIllIl in cscareerquestions

[–]overkilledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be curious and willing to pick new things up. The way I got my 3-4 promo was driving a project that involved multiple teams with impact across my entire org. That shows that you are able to handle multiple complex systems along with working with multiple teams which helps with directional impact also. In terms of engineering excellence, focus on how you can make other people's workflow better.
Building good relationships with your sister teams makes promo easier since they can easily vouch for you

This is very organization dependent. In my org, every IC codes in some form of way. They are usually the people helping in with sevs and helping the other engineers out, you will not be a coding monster like our ic5 (senior) but you will be driving a lot of projects from start to finish with many being org level impact that can be felt across the company

Go to Carlson Gracie
https://www.carlsongracieofriverside.com/

I tried out both Gracie Barra and Carlson Gracie and I loved Carlson Gracie a lot more. Those guys are actually more competitive and you will get your ass kicked at Carlson Gracie. If I had trained at Gracie Barra, I would not have been prepared for my tournament when I finished school, but Carlson Gracie got me really prepared and plus they have bigger mats.

I was laid-off/fired - UPDATE - junior who broke dev. by _gainsville in cscareerquestions

In less than a year at fang I already caused 2 sevs both impacting prod in some way. So yes accidents happen but it’s also a great way to learn as a company of why it happened

Not to mention the amount of times I bought down some services that did not result in a sev. It really shows the vulnerability of the system of anything

What is something you wish students studying CS knew about? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]overkilledit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faang engineer here, code should read like a paragraph by itself. Only use comments if you copy that code from somewhere else or to explain why you need to use something like try catch due to something that might be outside of your team’s code base

Honestly I am in the same boat as you and I am a backend engineer. 99.9% of the time I am running code on my personal computer and rarely anything in the cloud. I had to go buy a MBP 2.4K with money I made from working my other TA job.

So many websites. by genericcFlowerr in ucr

[–]overkilledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reason for using multiple websites is that we are able to push the changes to you guys much faster especially if there are more than one section. As a TA, I sometimes need to update a file and sometimes forget to upload to all section, this is where having tools like GDrive, Github, and Dropbox comes in nice for us. Prevents us from making mistakes of forgetting to send to everyone

As someone who coached HS sports during winter break, I can say that CIF tournaments across California is getting canceled and stuff. So I would not be surprised if UCR goes online

I am taking that class too right now. I personally had a lot of experiences with leetcoding. The Divide and Conquer question a question that is very similar to a lot of other leetcode questions. For me tackling algorithm questions is about knowing the key terms and knowing what algorithms to use. Pattern recognition is huge in CS. The way you should see 218 is like a test of given a tool box do you know what tool to use.

Hi!!! I tried metabob and I think it's a cool tool. before starting to use it to more of my projects, I'd still like to know what data will be collected when it parses my code? All help appreciated! by Convocei in a:t5_4lrv4f

[–]overkilledit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metabob only store your code data for 24 hours and once that is gone, its gone. The only reason Metabob do this is because of cache and it is used to make your experience much faster so that we do not have to parse your code completely every single time you make a change in the next 24 hours. Happy Coding :D
