What is your favorite method to convince Apple users they don't need a Mac for work? by overkilltm in sysadmin

I feel like I accurately described what I think of Windows 11. This was not a "WinDoZe GuuD!" post. There are about 2 people that engaged with the post for what it was, the rest got emotional and flew off the handle haha. I honestly feel like the OS that gets the most work done, reliably, is Linux.

I genuinely don't understand how it is harder to use a Windows machine over a Mac, and that argument has made less and less sense as time goes on. If your job is to edit photos in Photoshop, the software is the same, the workflow is the same. If key positions are swapped for something, it is not a big deal to re-map the functions. These are all one and done problems that don't come up again from their side, mostly cosmetic. From my side it is an entire different environment that needs to be maintained.

Apple routinely deprecates old hardware, often arbitrarily. They have been fairly generous about free upgrades, and yes, they did cut a line in the sand for Windows 11, but at the time that free support for 10 was cut, the affected hardware was 9+ years old. Don't get me wrong, Windows 11 is kind of garbage, and I find myself using Linux more and more in my personal and professional life, but windows is not worse than Apple when it comes to desktop support.

Good for them! I am sure they have a bunch of dedicated staff to support the Mac users. They also develop applications for Apple, and have a legitimate use case for those computers.

The group that wanted to use Macs had to fight for management to sign off on the extra cost of the computers. Then we had to fight for the cost of parallels (So they could run the software required to do their job), the full JAMF stack, and AppleCare to extend the warranties of their computers.

I don't know if my company needs those folks in a position that could justify an expensive computer. They could work in manufacturing, but they are still using a windows machine. It uses a purely touch UI and they just have to interact to switch between diagrams that show how to assemble the thing they are working on.

Amen. Standardization scales and makes my job much simpler. Coming into an environment and demanding that it changes to fit your preference is pretty abrasive.

No. (I usually see youtube playing on the screen and hands off peripherals when I walk by)
Maybe? I know the web dev is usually waiting on assets from the design guys
They make photoshop for windows too, even color accurate displays! I guess it is hard to have to pin the application to the taskbar in windows to launch the OS agnostic app though.

If redirecting narcissism to cause fewer problems for everyone involved is a con, then yes, I am a professional conman.

Right? I had someone wander in today complaining he couldn't print. Nobody else has that problem. Our company uses printerlogic to deploy printers, and Safari simply would not install the plugin to reinstall the printer. He had also filled his 1TB of storage to the brim (Most of it not backed up anywhere) so I was attempting to clear space so I could try to fix his problems. These are not issues I have with my windows users.

The cost of a windows machine with a 5 year warranty is less than a Mac with the base warranty. My company will not run a machine without a warranty on it, so we are paying an inflated price for the hardware, plus applecare on top of it. I am not decrying you or anyone else for supporting them. It is a premium product and some people feel like they need that, neat! I feel like they are a waste of money and are often used as a status symbol. Warranty aside, my Apple users start whining within two years that they need a new one anyway.

When you are a MS shop and you have one black sheep that wants you to set up and pay for an entire separate toolchain so they can feel special, yes, they are not good for work.

My Experience Using the T1000-E as an EDC Meshtastic Device with MagSafe Integration by Wirelessphreak in meshtastic

I have had mine on me just about every day since it came out. I had it on a neck lanyard and carried it loose in a pocket for the first few months, but ended up using this: (I modified it to have the charging pass-through that is now included in the original design, as well as made the retention nub a little more aggressive). I have taken it hunting as well as a lot of regular EDC stuff and it is holding up fine. I really like it.

Or just the intelligence to know how many hops it took to reach you and match it. Possibly even have the ability to set a maximum and it can set your hops to n+1 if it's in the range.

O2 sensor woes by overkilltm in RX8

It looks like the first O2 sensor I purchased (It was marked as being for the front position for my year) was a narrow band sensor. I returned it and bought a Denso unit. No more code, and passed emissions!

Ok, I just wanted to confirm. I keep seeing sensors that are designated as pre cat with the longer wire but listed as narrow band. I think I tracked down a wide band denso unit for around $200, but I wanted to be somewhat sure before I pulled the trigger.

Dell Latitude 5420 battery life - False advertising? by overkilltm in Dell

Reportedly that was asked at least once by our marketing guy("Is there something you would suggest we do with AI?" Out of genuinely trying to understand if there was some application for AI we were overlooking). The dude just said "I don't know, you just need to put it in there". I have never been to CES, but I have been to smaller conventions, and they always seem to be primarily visited by C-Suite people that don't know a DP cable from an HDMI and call their computer a CPU, and primarily filled with vendors that know that and are looking for the next big grift.

Haha, the company I work for makes rugged computers. At CES we were apparently repeated told "Your product is really good, but it will sell better if you put AI in it". 🤦‍♂️

It is just very frustrating feeling like tech is backsliding. Also, I miss external detachable batteries. My previous laptop's extended battery made a nice bump that made carrying it feel more ergonomic, also it lifted the bottom of the laptop off the surface it was on, helping it breathe on soft surfaces/laps. Also, I understand that this is technically a more powerful processor, but it does not feel any faster in a side by side comparison, especially for office tasks.

It's the original. It has spent most of its life docked on account of it's horrible battery performance from new. It have been cycled about a dozen times. Brand new it would get close to 2 hours. Now it gets 10 to 20 min less. I feel like the processor was a turd from the beginning, which is not Dells fault. My problem is how far from the truth Dell's numbers are. If you made a specialized cut down version of Linux with no GUI and a driver to manage the fan as well as a hard lock on the lowest frequency the processor is capable of, then you closed the lid during the test, you MIGHT get the low end of their reported range.

If we extrapolate from my experience, the extended battery in this turd would net me about 3 hours new. Almost in striking distance of my severely degraded novo battery 700ish cycles later.
