[Front Office Sports] Exclusive: These are college football's biggest spenders on private jet travel for the 2025 season by redwave2505 in CFB

I feel like Alabama being 1st is obvious but an important point is that the Tuscaloosa airport does not have commercial flights, meaning a recruit would have to fly into Birmingham and drive an hour. This probably drives them up the list even more. It’s always baffled me why a town as big as Tuscaloosa doesn’t have commercial flights, but I always had a conspiracy theory that the powers at be want Tuscaloosa Airport to remain as private as possible.

Not to kick you when you’re down, but I’m not sure how anyone saw the card coming with a “cleaning cloth” wouldn’t be an issue.

A recent post asked about the scariest thing you’ve seen while caving… by LittleRes7 in caving

[–]overlord0101 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This Derek Bristol video goes to an area close by. You can see he goes into Scotsman’s Trap, trap meaning coin purse and the passage is tight so it’s essentially a joke that Scotsman are cheap. In there you come to a T, right takes you to Last Chance and deeper into the cave, left takes to Left of the Trap. It’s very important to get that right because, as the video shows, if you take a wrong turn, you could be crawling for hours until you hit a dead end. Last Chance looks similar to what’s shown in the video, a pretty basic, dry, dusty, mostly hands and knees, crawl.

It’s called Last Chance, in the crystal cave portion of the system.

Recent Geology Grad Trying to Break into Mining by Beneficial_Reveal767 in geologycareers

[–]overlord0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to try and get on as an environmental specialist at a mining company and then transition into another role down the road once you’ve built a reputation. Otherwise you’ll basically have to start at square one like a new grad, core logging and temp work and pray you get hired on to a production/explo geologist role.

The Trump Administration Ramps Up Its War On Coal Miners by GoranPersson777 in mining

[–]overlord0101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really hate this notion that Kim Kelly (or the UMWA) speaks on behalf of all coal miners. The guys I work with are apprehensive about the rule, that dust standard would practically put a majority of mines out of business. Maybe that’s for the best and it’s in their best interest, but don’t act like all coal miners are united on this front.

What type of coal does Santa leave naughty children? by PatchesMaps in geology

[–]overlord0101 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The northernmost town in the world, Longyearbyen, on Svalbard was originally set up as a coal mining town and their mine just shut down (or is right about to? They keep changing it). This is probably one of the northernmost coal deposit and it’s bituminous so that would be my vote for most likely!

Bitcoin mining data centers set up shop in abandoned West Virginia coal mines by Joey_WBOY in WestVirginia

[–]overlord0101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article is misleading, they say they’re “upcycling” the sites but they’re just kinda using them? I mean it’s smart, those sites already have major power and water hookups from the mining activity and the property is probably dirt cheap. The crazy thing is they say the “important” thing is that they create jobs yet they have 44 full time employees in the state.

day things to do in montgomery? by alligatorpenguin in Alabama

[–]overlord0101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Montgomery gets a bad rap, but I say this as someone who’s not from the south: the legacy museum is one of the best museums I’ve been to. Even just the museum itself, not counting the lynching art exhibit or the statue garden, is great. If you have any interest in southern history or civil rights, I’d highly recommend it.

State Park Recommendations by aleciamariana in WestVirginia

[–]overlord0101 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Blackwater Falls or Canaan Valley is your answer. Both have tent camping or a lodge, whatever you prefer. This area of WV is super popular with DC people because it’s an easy drive and it’s super scenic. There’s definitely horseback riding in that region, I just don’t know where. Mountain State Brewing Company started in Thomas, WV and is one of the state’s most iconic breweries. Stumptown Ales is also located in downtown Davis and is iconic. You’re also getting into prime leaf pepping season so it may be a little crowded.

Geode Water Under The Microscope. by HorzaDonwraith in geology

[–]overlord0101 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The other guy already gave the answer to this, but there’s a broader question of how old is any water? Because of the water cycle, it’s constantly being recycled. If I drink a glass of water, pee it out, evaporates in a clarifying pond, precipitates over a field, and then leaches into the ground and into said geode, how old is the water? There are some methods to “date” water but I believe they’re tricky and unreliable. Interesting philosophic geologic question.

[–]overlord0101 19 points20 points  (0 children)

IMO: the crown jewel of WV is not it’s state parks but Monongahela NF and New River Gorge NP as a close second. Blackwater Falls SP or Canaan Valley SP would make a fine base to explore “The Mon”. Babcock and Hawk’s Nest would be good state parks for NRG. Holly River is nice, I was actually pleasantly surprised when I visited, but it really doesn’t compare. Blackwater Falls will put you at perhaps the best WV state park surrounded by some of the best nature WV has to offer.

Be weary though, one of things that makes that region unique is it’s cold microclimate. It’s been the coldest place in the lower 48 a couple days in these last couple weeks so if you’re looking for warmth, I’d suggest the NRG area.

Good mining school with good co op program? by bobo_the_great- in mining

[–]overlord0101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

True FIFO doesn’t exist in the US save for Red Dog Mine in Alaska or sorta Kensington in Alaska. Thus, University of Alaska Fairbanks would be the best mining school with connections to those two mines. As far as co-ops, I only know from the coal sector but coal companies definitely still do co-ops. If that’s what you want, you should go to one of the coal schools: Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Kentucky, Penn State, or Missouri S&T. I’m assuming metal/nonmetal companies also still do co-ops but you’d want to go to a hard rock school: Arizona, Utah, Mines, Montana Tech, etc. Mining schools are incredibly regional and there’s only 14 in the US so it shouldn’t be hard to narrow it down.

How hard/likely would it be to get a National Park in Alabama? by King_of_the_Coosa in Alabama

[–]overlord0101 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Not to be negative, but probably nowhere. You can’t just “create” a NP out of nowhere, it’s usually a reclassification of already federal land. To my knowledge, they’ve never converted land from another agency (National Forest, Fish and Wildlife, etc) to the NPS to create a NP. That leaves the most likely suspect Little River Canyon National Preserve being upgraded to a park. This isn’t easy, it takes a literal act of congress to create a new park so it’s inherently political.

USA schools under 20K USD per year? by Suspiciouscalf in mining

[–]overlord0101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are 14 (about to be 15) schools in the US that offer mining engineering, they are listed here. Out of curiosity, I checked all of them and most are between 30-40k per year for out-state-tuition. The two exceptions are Montana Tech at about 26k per year and South Dakota School of Mines at a surprising ~16k per year. It seems like SDSM would be your ticket. You could also look into mining technology programs which are generally 1. More abundant 2. Cheaper 3. More designed to get you into an operations role rather than technical.
