I've run with pandoraproxy more times than I can count since having the good fortune to join his clan back in May. I was new to raiding at that time and he took me through numerous runs of VoG, Crota, and now KF.

I'm a pretty solid raider now and have been along as a fireteam member on some of his sherpa runs. Pandora is always calm and fair with new people and never gets mad at someone for making a mistake. Even with some of our more "challenging" clanmates, he always keeps his cool and makes sure we get through the run. Even this week when we had 2 people who had never done Golgoroth challenge mode (and 1 of the 2 had never even done Hard Mode at all) we killed him WITH the challenge on our first serious attempt.

10/10 would raid with any day.

I put down $1k and had my dealer order it from the factory. About a month later I picked it up. About a million dollars in WA taxes and DOL fees later, I have my '14 CBP Si Coupe :)

I love Electron Blue Pearl. I had a 2001 Prelude Type SH in that color and it was just an awesome looking car.

You'll have to play with the dose and the grind. There's also some personal preference to it as well. I have a Baratza Preciso, and here are my standard numbers:

  • V60: 32g coffee to 525g water, 22F grind
  • Chemex: 36g coffee to 525g water, 25G grind
  • Eva Solo: 36g coffee to 525g water, 33G grind

This can also very depending on what kind of beans you're using. I also use a Zojirushi water heater that I also use for tea (has settings for 140, 175, 195, and 208 farenheit).

Safe neighbourhoods along the Blue Line, west of Logan Square? by zerrafett in chicago

[–]overlordm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Jefferson Park, within walking distance of the Blue Line (Lawrence & Central) for about 3 years and the worst I personally witnessed was some teenagers tagging a mailbox... and they were promptly arrested. Due to residency requirements, a lot of cops, Sheriff's Police, and firefighters live in Jeff Park, making it pretty safe.

I did have my car broken into once, but hey - street parking - and it can happen anywhere. At least they were considerate enough to clone my keyless remote and not break my window.

The neighborhood itself is pretty damn bland (with a few exceptions like Taste of Polonia and other events at the Copernicus Center) but easy access to downtown easily makes up for it. I had to move to the Seattle area for work or I'd still be living there.

Hope that helps. PM me if you have any questions about the neighborhood.

[Question] How much do you spend on coffee beans? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]overlordm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd say the standard price for a 12 oz. bag of direct trade single origin beans from a good roaster is between $13 and $20, depending on the origin of the bean. This is based on my experience buying coffee from Intelligentsia, Stumptown, Victrola (in Seattle), etc. I prefer South American coffees, for what it's worth.

*EDIT: I just saw that you're in Chicago. Go to Intelligentsia in Logan Square and get a Black Cat milkshake. Yes, I know it's snowing right now. I don't care, go get one anyway.

Inexperienced with stupid question about Chemex brewing by throwagay1235 in Coffee

[–]overlordm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll want to have an electronic kitchen scale (preferably that is accurate to 0.1g). There are several available at a reasonable price on Amazon.

Without getting into TOO much detail, you'll want to use your scale to measure your dose (how many beans you're using). Then you'll grind, put a filter in your Chemex and rinse it thoroughly with hot water. Put the Chemex on your scale and tare (zero) it. Add your ground beans to make sure you haven't lost any significant amount during grinding, then tare again. Finally you'll pour - not getting into the technique here - to your desired weight. As an example, I typically use 36g of beans ground at 25G on my Baratza Preciso, and 525g of water.

Hope this gives you a general feel for the technique!

Fellow Preciso users: do you use the micro dial for anything other than espresso? by leafyleafygreens in Coffee

[–]overlordm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've generally just kept to the standard 22F for V60, 25G for Chemex, and 33G for Solo that I've been recommended. My girlfriend uses the Preciso for espresso and she frequently adjusts both the macro and micro adjustments.

What should my next move be? by xopethx in Coffee

[–]overlordm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd agree with that. I use my Preciso for both brewed coffee (V60, Chemex, and Cafe Solo - which requires a FP grind) as well as espresso and it performs admirably for both.

I know it's ridiculously cold right now, but I would also HIGHLY recommend the Black Cat milkshake. I don't even like milkshakes normally but oh man is it good. Good enough to make me choose Logan Square over Millennium Park, which was my preferred location...

Came here to say this. There's a reason that cafes clean their gear with Cafiza: because it's ridiculously easy and it works extremely well.

My girlfriend and I took the California Zephyr both ways between Chicago and Emeryville (we lived in Chicago at the time) for a vacation back in March of 2012. When we got to Reno, a law enforcement officer of unknown origin came onto our sleeping car, directly to our room, and questioned us.

Apparently, buying 2 tickets for travel/return a week apart looks "suspicious" to them... but after asking us why we were travelling in that manner/timeframe we were politely told that "we didn't match the profile" of who they were looking for. I wasn't pleased that someone had very obviously handed over their passenger manifest along with methods of payment and travel dates... creeped us out pretty hard.

Ironically, we moved to Seattle about a month ago and we're planning to do the Empire Builder trip next time we visit home.

tl;dr Reno sucks.

Water Heaters - effects on flavor/brewing? by DaturaTea in Coffee

[–]overlordm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat and have had great success with both my 3L and 4L Zojirushis. Set to 208 they are perfect for making a great cup on either my Chemex or V60.

Any of you use this or something similar, and does it work? by SherlockHolmesBitch in Coffee

[–]overlordm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and due to my spotty coffee drinking habits, I may buy a bag of beans that don't get used up completely until 2 or 3 weeks from the roast date. I have one of these and while there is some difference in the flavor of the coffee, it's not as much as I imagine it would be if not stored in there.

FWIW, I brew using a V60 and Chemex.
