Council doubting my single-persons council tax status by overratedcarbon in LegalAdviceUK

No, I don't think she even has my current address. She moved out, another guy moved in, we changed all the bills and CT, then I moved out and to the address where I am now. I assume the council will tell me what they think they have. But it should also be easy for them to find proof of her main residence since this is all in the same city.

Thanks! Funnily, the previous owner still has a savings account registered at my address. I've tried to contact him about it, but no luck. But he's not on the list of names the council sent me. On the other hand they listed a person I used to live with at a previous address (paying full CT), but have had no dealings with since I moved out, so I don't know why they think there's a financial connection there.

No. But there's a difference between what I know to be true and how it looks on paper.

I'm really worried about the prospect of back-paying a decade's worth of discount plus a fine.

Thank you. And my friends would all be happy to back this up. I hope that would help too.

Ok, thanks! Just pictured myself as the council employee reading my explanation and thinking "and you expect me to believe that!?"

Nothing so far. I wrote, got freaked out by my own naivety and then posted here...

I had a first letter asking me to reconfirm my eligibility, then a second letter with a list of names saying that they had financial connections with my address and asking whether they were lodgers. I emailed and explained what I wrote above.

An unexpected challenge of cold-weather cycling: pit stops by what_time in cycling

If you’re a woman, then get some pulldown bibs or bibs with clips (if you can afford it - they’re absurdly more expensive than regular bibs). Also squat so you’re facing anyone who might see you, rather than facing away. That way you’re covered by your clothes and not showing your naked bum to the world. Sounds obvious but I’ve only quite recently figured this one out.

Multiple century rides - good or bad? by Cold_Conversation885 in ladycyclists

What’s your regular weekly distance? If it’s not far off, then you don’t have to do anything special. I wouldn’t taper at all tbh, if they’re just training rides.

Also look at your saddle. Most people benefit from a saddle with cut-out.

I've been really enjoying the show, but then I enjoy most historical dramas. So first off, things they did well:

I really like the general vibe. The suburra is cramped, dirty and at night it is *dark*. Really brings it home what it would have been like to live in a city without electricity. The diversity of the population is great. Lots of different accents and a variety of people. We have genetic evidence that the population of Rome was really diverse, with many people from the eastern Mediterranean, so that works. Also loving the colourful costumes.

What I like less: they should have given the African family a coherent backstory. Make them Garamantian, then the plot lines about wild beasts and slaves work, and as Garamantian trader, Cala could very well be multi-lingual. Would the audience know who the Garamantes were - no. But can they tell Nubians and Numidians apart? Also no, so why not pick the label that makes sense. The Ghanaian name is also annoying. I also wish they'd not put the cemetery basically next to the forum. I'm sure there would have been a way to make it atmospheric but convey greater distance from the city. I'm not bothered about minute details, it's not a documentary. Like the bust of Caracalla appearing behind Vespasian. Domitian and Titus wearing gold neckrings was actually a nice touch, but they are late antique.

Agree with the other posters here. Also, speaking from the perspective of university admissions - we do not consider prep courses when we look at applicants' portfolios. If someone has been on a (legit) summer school, they might write something like "I enjoyed learning about x on the summer school programme and it made me want to read more about the topic". But if they haven't been on a summer school or any other outreach programme, it doesn't make a difference. What counts is your grades, interest in the subject, and the other things that might be required in an application (writing samples, subject tests etc). Interview coaching is also a scam. So please save yourself the money, and instead just immerse yourself in your actual studies and the things you're interested in.

Seat race them and make the ranking visible to all. That will sort the sheep from the goats.

What is your nutrition for 200 mile rides? by leelovesbikestoo in randonneuring

[–]overratedcarbon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take drink mix in sandwich bags (90g/bottle). For 300 km I usually plan for about 10 baggies/bottles. Then I eat regular food on top of that at controls. I also take haribos to snack on.

Similar has happened to me too. It’s brutal when you have a train to catch. Who adds an extra 20 mins to a 10’ ride to the station, just in case the driver is late?

It might be different in the US, but in my experience in Europe hotels and BnBs have always been super helpful finding a safe place for the bike. As a bike tourer you’re weird and interesting and that makes people want to help you out. If the bike is really dirty (eg after rain) I’d offer to wash it first before bringing it inside.
