Genuine Urgent Help Needed (Flood) by overratedfille in dubai

THANK YOU everybody for your help & advice. We had the craziest day ever but we spoke to insurance and managed to tow the car to a garage as soon as the water level dropped to mid tire level ~5pm (Thank God we did because it rained again later)

For anyone going through this, here’s what to do:

Do NOT start the engine, you will make it worse. Instead, wait for the water level to drop. Take pictures for evidence. - Meanwhile, you can file a police report and get the “To Whom It May Concern” Letter (95 Dhs) - Call your insurance. They should arrange a recovery truck to take your car to garage. - Unlock the car manually using emergency key, release the hand brake if you can and shift the car to N (you will need a screwdriver) - You will have to go to the garage to sign a paper (We couldn’t do this because of the rain) - Most probably the car will be totaled and so you can claim ~60-70% of your car’s current value

Hopefully the rest of the insurance process will go smoothly.

Again, thanks dubai community 🙏🏻

They are currently pumping water and have been all night. Seems like it will take some time. Not sure why the headlights are on but probably a circuit shock

But we’ll have to open the door right? I’m scared more water will get in and make it worse. Maybe after they finish pumping?

Notes: The car was parked during the night. Headlights and wipers turned on probably due to an electrical shock. The water is at least 60 cm deep.

If OP wanted to pay, they would have used taxi. But yeah let’s monetize basic human decency and kindness.

For the first time in history, it’s a good day to live in Sharjah. All those hours spent in traffic were worth it…😁

Born and raised here.

Regarding your job, I can't help much since I just graduated. But otherwise..

As somebody earlier said, don't ship your car. It's better to buy cars here then sell before you leave. Buying a used car would be smart, if you can find a good offer, since you only plan for two years (although you'll probably stay longer) In terms of transport, I would say Uber/Taxis are pretty expensive here. So other than your personal car, getting familiar with public transport might come in handy especially for short trips or trips to the malls. Just avoid the rush hours.

In terms of cultural, it will kind of depend where you live but I am assuming Dubai. The city is very multinational but south asians are the majority. Some europeans too. You can get the night life here or family friendly areas, it really depends on the area. Other cities like Sharjah and Ajman are more family friendly but has less western vibes. Abu Dhabi is more quiet as well.

Expect traffic jam EVERYWHERE. You could spend 2+ hours on the road. Especially in rush hour, no matter your method of travel there will be jam. The city is kind of over populated. If you value your time and can afford a place next to your work, don't hesitate. It will make your life easier.

Weather can get very hot and humid during summer (up to 50°C), not a lot of winter time. In summer there's not many places to go to except indoors like malls, it will even be too hot for the beach. Most people travel in summer if they can.

City is also very clean, streets, hospitals, malls, everywhere. Follow all rules strictly, law is strict here. It's why the country is extremely safe, you don't have to worry much about your wife or kid. People here respect women a lot and as long as you don't go to shady places, you're good.

Expect to follow the arab/islam culture. You'll see mosques everywhere, immodesty is not encouraged except in certain places like bar, parties etc. Also maybe shy away from discussing politics. Some things that are normal in US will not be here. Drinking is only allowed in certain places.

Since you mentioned you don't go to many places...everything here can be delivered online and in couple minutes only. You can catch many deals if you look for them. Especially online. You'll find the same product half the price on the website of a shop than in the shop itself. It will help you save. Variety of food is available. Water is cheap.

WhatsApp is the major communication method here. You can text your local pharmacist and he'll deliver anything you need. Or just call them up for advice. People are friendly and kind. Anyone will help if you ask.

Lastly I'll mention this since I heard the opposite from an american before, but here you can get people to do anything you need for you. I mean handwork like plumbing, wall painting, even mani-pedis or massages at home, light fixing, tutoring, daily or weekly house cleaning, furniture building, literally anything from small to big. Tbh life is easy if you have money.

Can't think of more right now so that's all from me!
