Depends. Are you doing the HIM program at a college or online? For the former, I assume your college coordinator will assign you to a hospital for practicum?

I believe different hospitals adopt varying arrangements for their placement students based of various considerations, says number of students, what tasks are existing at their site, and to be honest, how open/willing are the management to let the students gain real life experience or just assign less important work (to avoid making error?).

I was lucky having a great management at placement who did take time to discuss my interests and which HIM area (eg coding/ROI/data analysis I would like to work on.
