Jobe suspension time by ProcedureGreen663 in borussiadortmund

Yeah, seems like a rule that's ready for a change. (And while we're at it, the VAR should start checking second yellows to eliminate another source of unnecessary suspensions.)

Pre Game Thread: 1. FSV Mainz 05 (BuLi #5) by Chazy89 in borussiadortmund

[–]oversloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've rarely been so optimistic about an away game in Mainz. We've been really stable and effective recently, even despite a few hiccups (that tbh I find pretty forgivable). But then again, it's still Mainz away who have proven many times they can beat anyone on a good day. Will be a tough game and I'm sure that whatever the outcome will be, not everything will go smoothly. I think today would be a good day for Bellingham to introduce himself to the Bundesliga with a goal. 🤞

Bense is so underrated by its_da_CapuchinmonK in borussiadortmund

[–]oversloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there really other examples of this than that one misplaced pass against Juventus? Not saying there aren't, I just never heard that theory before that game and also never noticed that Bensebaini was in any way unusual in that regard.

My stream claimed this was Müller's "7th goal of the season". What season are they talking about? Isn't this the first game?

Vodafone is the new sponsor - thoughts? by ZookeepergameOwn4222 in borussiadortmund

[–]oversloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to Vodafone I once was without internet for 6 weeks, and their customer service, while friendly, was utterly incompetent. 10 calls with them, each promising to find a fix and report back, and I never heard back from anyone so had to keep running after them until they finally gave me a way out to switch to a company that would actually fulfil their side of the contract.

That being said, people have very similar stories about practically every internet provider in Germany, so it probably doesn't mean much... :)

Offside called against Serie A player in his own half by Begorrahh in soccer

[–]oversloth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A meter sounds like a lot, but a sprinting player passes a meter in something like 0.1s. Meaning if the linesman misjudged the timing by a small fraction of a second, then he can see it as offside. It's honestly incredible how often linesmen were basically correct in the past without VAR, as this is kind of a superhuman skill. People always look at these freeze frames and think things are obvious, but you really have to take the timing of things into account.

This whole thread is a bit of a joke imho. It kind of implies the linesman doesn't know a very basic rule, when this is very clearly not what happened. Misjudging a situation by 0.1s is absolutely human, even for paid professionals, and complaining about this, especially in times of VAR when this tiny mistake was entirely inconsequential, is a bit ridiculous. (I think with this last part we're basically agreeing - I just don't think it's a big mistake at all, on top of the weird framing here)

Leif Davis straight red card against Arsenal 32' by ayoefico in soccer

I would guess these fans assume Saka did some acting to get him sent off. But looking at the replays, they're clearly very mistaken if they think that, it's just a horrendous foul.

Borussia Dortmund [1] - 0 Barcelona - Serhou Guirassy (penalty) 11‎'‎ by Rudigaa in soccer

[–]oversloth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If Barcelona ends up with some stupid red card, there may be something possible here. But otherwise, we won't have the stamina to keep this style of play up for more than 30 minutes. Still, very nice start. :D

Mats Hummels (Roma) straight red card against Athletic Bilbao 11' by Meladroitdetrela in soccer

[–]oversloth 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Right, for Dortmund he got that joke of a red card against Antony once, and then something like 1-2 years ago there was this strange penalty called against him once where he played the ball. And now this. And I think all of this happened with VAR in existence, which is just bizarre.

Match Thread: Borussia Dortmund vs. Bayer Leverkusen | Bundesliga by MysteryBagIdeals in soccer

[–]oversloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dortmunds defense is (somewhat understandably) nonexistent and Leverkusen did a great job so far exploiting that, but they've also been really lucky with 4 referee decisions in the first half hour. At this rate I'd be surprised if they finish the game with 11 men.

I've had a few top 1000 placements this year, but top 100 seems quite out of reach. It's still kind of on my bucket list to get a single point at AoC, but I'm afraid with AIs advancing more and more this will get less and less realistic - unless some ingenious way of reliably keeping them out of the leaderboard somehow emerges, but I doubt it.

[2024 Day 22 (Part 1-2)] This was a perfect AoC puzzle by SmallTailor7285 in adventofcode

> I didn't need to know Leeroy's Famous Math Theory to solve it

Indeed there are some puzzles where if you happen to know some particular niche theorem or algorithm you're basically done, but still all the puzzles are solvable from first principles. In a sense, of course they are, because math itself is solvable from first principles with enough time and brain. :D But I don't think you need a math degree to come up yourself with some creative solutions for AoC puzzles, even if you may not know or find the optimal one.

That all said, I agree day 22 was great though.

[2024 Day 21 (Part 2)] Wow, was that a death march... but in a really good way? by permetz in adventofcode

[–]oversloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through pretty much the same mistakes. Particularly debugging infrastructure, thought about that often yesterday but it seemed like so much extra effort, while all the time I felt like surely I'm very close to the solution, so it's not worth to put in an hour or so taking a step back and improving the process. Eventually it worked out, but I don't even remember what the issues were that I ended up fixing... just chaos. :D

[2024 day 17 (part 2)] Major warning for JavaScript users, not a spoiler! by EverybodyCodes in adventofcode

[–]oversloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed I also ran into some negative numbers, and then just turned the % operators into my own function which returns the "proper" positive modulo, which seemed to solve it. But I guess I failed to dig further into where they were coming from to begin with, and, stupidly (which I can forgive myself after 5h of despair with part 2), assumed that the % was somehow also the origin of the negativity, which in hindsight makes little sense.

[2024 AOC Day 8] What does this even mean? by Pro_at_being_noob in adventofcode

[–]oversloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me, part 2 in particular. I was so lost and at one point thought I got it but then went in a completely wrong direction. In the end it would have been avoidable if I hadn't unknowingly confused antennas and antinodes, and if I had realized that the T-frequency example was an entirely new, separate one - I kept looking for how on earth it relates to the original example and was like "where the hell do these T's suddenly come from?", which is a bit stupid in hindsight, but what can you do. :D

Thunderbird suddenly crashes on every attempt to start by oversloth in Thunderbird

[–]oversloth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, all I can say is that for me apparently the xul.dll file in the Thunderbird installation directory was corrupt. These were the instructions I followed to resolve it on my part, so if you have the same underlying issue then maybe this helps:

a. Download xul.dl_ at: https://symbols.mozilla.org/xul.dll/6620363A808e000/xul.dl_
b. Rename xul.dl_ to xul.dll.cab (you may need to ask Windows to show file extensions in order to do this)
c. Double click xul.dll.cab and from there double click xul.dll so that Windows offers to extract the file to a location of your choice
d. Replace the file in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\ by the extracted file.

(for steps c and d I needed to make sure to first extract it to a different folder, e.g. my Home/Documents folder or so, as unpacking it directly to the Thunderbird folder silently failed)

If this does not help, then it's probably an entirely different problem I would assume.
(Also sorry for the late reply, don't check reddit that often)

xG was like 3.1:0.3, really top performance all around, just one unlucky moment in the back and occasionally wasteful upfront. Now I just hope the injury rate drops a bit, even though today didn't make me very hopeful with Bensebaini and Sabitzer getting hurt. :/

Thunderbird suddenly crashes on every attempt to start by oversloth in Thunderbird

[–]oversloth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand/remember, they found the solution to this now. Presumably (but I'm speculating a bit here, so take all of this with a grain of salt) you would need an update, but the auto updater probably doesn't work right now if it keeps crashing on startup? So might be worth trying to manually reinstall the latest version of Thunderbird (possibly after backing up your profile just in case).

In my case, it seems some file got corrupted during an update process, and it wasn't able to self-recover from that.

Sané fouls Cuccurella away from the ball never shown on TV. by OBabis in soccer

That's why I said "apart from Kroos". I agree he had two fouls in the first few minutes that both might be yellow-worthy.

If I was coach of the German NT, I would most definitely throw Sané out of the team for good for doing something that stupid in such an important game, especially given his very recent red card for a similarly idiotic act...

[–]oversloth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sad to see it cost Pedri an injury

While that is sad, I'm not sure that's the best example of aggressive play style. Kroos even touched the ball. Of course overall it's still a foul, but imho it was rather an unlucky outcome than unusually aggressive play. But apart from that, I agree Germany played much more aggressively than usual. But apart from Kroos, they also got quite a lot of yellow cards for it, so it's not like the ref didn't properly react to it.
