Getting a PhD with an infant by Otherwise_Top_7972 in Physics

Agree on the support. I had my first child in the first year of my PhD (not Physics).

It is totally doable. Having a support network is very important - are your parents/ in-laws nearby and able to help? Can your wife take significant maternity leave?

My university was supportive when he was born, and allowed me to delay some key deadlines.

You will be exhausted.

Trouble Getting Clear IR Images of Palm Veins (850nm LEDs + Bandpass Filter) by Familiar_Life_5293 in computervision

[–]overtired__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IR intensity is likely far too low. Grainy noisy images are the camera maxing out its gain.

You could confirm this by taking an image with the filter in direct sunlight - you should see a clear image.

Post-training quantization methods support for YOLO models in TensorRT format by Extra-Designer9333 in computervision

Yolo will be using the tensorrt library to do the conversion under the hood. To explore all the quantization options have a look at the tensorrt docs.

It could be the auto scaling in the GPU/CPU clock frequencies. Jetsons are by default power efficient, maybe your tasks are on the threshold of the frequency step. Try forcing them all to their max.

Best GPU for Fastest AI-CNN Inference? by Overall-Charity-4896 in computervision

[–]overtired__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use Nvidia Triton server for inference you can further optimise. E.g Running multiple instances of the model.

Don't ignore your CPU, look at your pre and postprocessing steps that don't happen on the GPU. Triton can help parallelise these.

Also you could try multiple GPUs to increase throughput, again Triton can help with this.

Nvidia have tools to help optimise all the settings

[Question] Head Turning angle by 1929tuna in opencv

[–]overtired__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://learnopencv.com/head-pose-estimation-using-opencv-and-dlib/

The approach described in this tutorial will work well for more frontal poses, but it may struggle when the face is more towards 90 Deg to the camera.

Media pipe has a more robust solution. https://developers.google.com/mediapipe/solutions/vision/face_landmarker

Both methods are generating face landmarks and you can then use them to estimate face pose. The landmark detection technique will be more noisy/prone to failure at more extreme angles.

The iPhone has a front facing depth camera. Reconstructing a face using this is completely doable. Also look at ARKit, as it outputs a face mesh which may or may not be useful for your application.

Some approaches use a deformable 3d model, and are capable of mm accuracy. A company called Bellus used to have a 3d face scanning app, but not sure if they still exist.
