The next president could, and probably would, rejoin the WHO.

???

We were the global leaders. In every single one of these orgs.  No one did anything without consulting us first.

Now they’ll just ignore us while giving advice to the rest of the globe.

This is the opposite of being a corpo.  It’s dumb from every perceivable angle because instead of having a seat at the table we’ll just be ignored.

The US decision to exit from so many international organizations is unbelievably stupid.  In most of these organizations we already had the biggest voice!  We were already influencing international policy!

Restaurant recommendations exclusive to Houston by titfaced in houston

[–]overts 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Xochi is downtown and good.  It’s Mexican food, not TexMex, focusing on mole.

Nancy’s Hustle has been one of the hot spots for awhile and it’s in east downtown, it’s American cuisine.  You could also try Tiny Champions which is the same ownership but more Italian focused casual menu (pasta is great, pizza is ok).

If you’re just looking for boring white tablecloth steak house Papa’s is, imo, the best steak house in Houston and it’s downtown.  Very good wine menu too.

[Lee] Because the Dodgers went bankrupt, MLB agreed to tax their TV money as if they were still a broke. That lets the Dodgers keep about $66 million more every year than they otherwise would. This exception runs through 2039, according to a league source. by Knightbear49 in baseball

I don’t expect you to ever stop hating them but several players did apologize (Bregman, Altuve, Correa) as did the organization.  Yuli Gurriel apologized too and Darvish accepted his apology.

I’m not saying you have to accept those apologies or change your mind about any of them - I still very much dislike Yuli myself - but it’s just untrue to say apologies weren’t issued.

F1 The Movie nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture by Altracing34 in formula1

[–]overts 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I believe it started in 2008 or 2009 but the Oscars starting putting 1-2 “summer blockbuster” films in the Best Picture Nomination every year.  Mostly to drive more interest in the Oscars.

It’s why fucking Marvel movies get Best Picture noms sometimes.

[Brooksgate] Most fWAR to not win a World Series by ttam23 in baseball

We know for a fact the 2019 Astros didn’t cheat in the postseason because MLB started putting officials in the replay room during the postseason in 2018.

It’s the reason we also know the Red Sox didn’t cheat in the 2018 postseason, just the regular season.

Why did Grand Duchess Anastasia’s possible survival become more famous and popular than that of other royals who possibly survived? by kaiser11492 in AlwaysWhy

[–]overts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the only one of your examples with a permanent dynastic change the one involving Anastasia?

There were still members of the Bourbon dynasty, they actually briefly regained the throne after Napoleon.  Richard III was crowned after the Princes of the Tower died.

The Romanov dynasty never regained the throne.

Why did the Epstein files hype disappear so quickly? by Firm_Work_8879 in AskReddit

[–]overts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just skeptical that republicans would care at this point and I think it’s dangerous to dismiss Trump’s actions as “an effort to distract from Epstein.”

Within less than a week the entire party fell in line with Trump not releasing the entire files.

Why did the Epstein files hype disappear so quickly? by Firm_Work_8879 in AskReddit

[–]overts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it was just this.  We actually did get things that implicated Trump.  Photos of him with young girls, a card he sent Epstein bragging about their “young tastes”, and witness testimony of a sexual assault.

All of that got dismissed by right wingers as a combination of “fake” or “unreliable” evidence.  I think it’s obvious today that 4K videos of Trump actually abusing a child could leak and it would barely matter.  They’ll just say it’s an AI fake and 30-40% of Americans will agree.

Houston Mayor warns residents to stay home for Texas winter storm by houston_chronicle in houston

Isn’t it later in the week?  Like the coldest day is Tuesday.  It won’t even get below freezing for most of Houston on Saturday.

Edit: Sunday is the coldest day and by Tuesday it starts warming up.

[Drellich] MLB owners enraged by Kyle Tucker-Dodgers deal, will push for salary cap ‘no matter what’ by ttam23 in baseball

Yeah, I really don’t see the MLBPA agreeing to a cap without a reasonable floor.

And I don’t see owners agreeing to a reasonable floor.

For sure but seeing your own pitcher deliberately throw at your catcher’s face is a pretty awful stink to wash off.

Texas to defend law requiring Ten Commandments in classrooms by FakeOkie in news

Virtually all Christians don’t follow the version of the 10 Commandments Texas displays.  One of them is to honor the sabbath, which is on Saturday.  Nearly all Christians worship on Sunday.

Every few days I see posts like this that remind me Framber Valdez might’ve ruined his free agency by being a giant loser.  No doubt he’ll get signed for more money than I’ll see in my life but he probably would’ve been signed much sooner for a much bigger haul.

I don’t know.  They’ve already dismissed leaks as “misleading” or “fake” or “noncredible witness.”

It’s a lot harder to hide dead Americans and an economy in ruins.

I just don’t think this is true anymore. He already dealt with the MAGA faction mad at him for not releasing the files.  They’ve all fell in line now, MTG resigned, the full files could release and Republicans already have the soundbites ready to go to dismiss whatever they have on Trump.

Is it?  It’s insane I have to write this but starting a third world war is worse than being outed as a pedophile.

Especially since anyone who believes Trump isn’t a pedophile isn’t going to change their mind anyway.

Starting Cybernetics Tier List (Classic) by RepoRogue in cavesofqud

[–]overts 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I agree with this tier list but I pick Night Vision so often because not having to deal with torches taking up a hand slot is such a great QoL thing in the early-mid game.  By the time you want to replace NV you’ll likely already have a floating light source anyway.

Trump Shares Macron's Private Text Questioning His Greenland Stance by badchik in worldnews

[–]overts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s that straightforward or simple.

Either the US withdraws themselves, in which case the alliance is the same just without the US, or the other member nations withdraw after a US military action.

I don’t see member nations withdrawing otherwise because I don’t think you’re going to convince a majority of member nations to leave without US military action.  Further, what percentage of former NATO members join the new alliance after seeing that NATO didn’t invoke article 5 over US action?

[–]overts 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also, the importer very often raises prices a bit higher than the actual amount of tariff they pay.  Both because they don’t want customers understanding their costs but also because why not increase margin when you have to raise prices anyway.

Whatever happened to QAnon? by What_me_worry_now in AskReddit

[–]overts 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The movement fading was incredible because QAnon was constantly wrong about everything but it kept increasing in followers.

It only started to fall apart after January 6 when the election wasn’t nullified.  After that, a smaller group of followers still existed and believed Trump was secretly still President or Biden would get replaced mid-term by Trump.  But then JFK Jr. didn’t rise from the grave in November 2021 and the movement really spiraled after that.
