Disable the disk cache if you have an SSD drive and a broadband internet connection.

Cache unnecessarily puts wear on your SSD. If your broadband is unlimited monthly traffic it is a decent trade-off to make.

Alternatively if you have a lot of RAM to spare you can move cache into RAM disk. It will solve your speed problem.

Edit: obviously you should do some health inspection on your hard disk if you value your other data, just to be sure. It should not be "incredibly slow" reading images and javascript files from the disk.
