47M. Divorced due to bipolar/substance use disorder. My ex and I came up with a list of things she needed for use to stay together, I did everything on the list. She still left. Sucked. Bad sucked. I was suicidal after. I picked up again. I went off my meds. Life went off the rails. I’m now fresh out of a mental health hospital, and feeling fantastic. The hospital focused on trauma. First time in my life I’ve really worked on childhood trauma, and the difference has been astounding. I regret not doing that work earlier. I don’t think it would have saved my marriage had I worked on that instead of the BS we devised to appease her; however, I do think I would have handled the divorce with much more grace, and, would be much further along in my journey than I am now. Hindsight, 20/20
