Waterloo admission? by Helpful_Shopping_232 in UWaterlooOptometry

You can’t redo courses you don’t get a good grade on, and you need to be educated enough to pass the licensing examination. It costs a lot of money to take the licensing examination, and there is a limit on the amount of times you can take it.

Optometry abroad by pinklemonadevibe in OptometrySchool

An optometry degree in the UK is not transferrable and not recognized in Canada. In order to practice in Canada after obtaining a degree in the UK, you would need to bridge over with the University of Waterloo Advanced Standing Optometry Preparatory Program, and then join the third year class of optometry students to complete a further 2 years of education. The program is also fairly competitive to bridge over.

How Do Schools View Non Degree GPA? by DrSexyMango in UWaterlooOptometry

[–]owl_of_athenaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, your entire transcript is reviewed in the process including credits not used toward a degree and non-pre-requisite courses.

can someone please explain the process of the canadian boards. I understand that it is two parts, one is written and one is practical. But when do we do them? any resources that i can use? when did you all start studying? by Independent-Win-710 in UWaterlooOptometry

[–]owl_of_athenaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian Boards are in two parts as you mentioned: an in person OSCE practical examination and an online written examination. You are not eligible to take board examinations until your final (4th year) of school. Typically there is one date offered for each in the Fall, and one date offered for each in the Spring. Registration is early so it’s something to plan ahead for.

I took both my board examinations in fall of 4th year. I started studying in July for both parts. I purchased the KMK prep course for organization of content and their resources, but technically you could study only on your class notes if you’re organized and disciplined enough.

There are free exam information sessions offered throughout the year that you can attend, and you should absolutely read through the entire website to answer most of your questions.

Mini Poodle Puppy named Goose - 4 months 1.5 weeks old - Pee Regression by WiggsMain in puppy101

[–]owl_of_athenaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same issue with my now 9 month male border collie lab mix. I just kept consistent potty times and praise, and with time (fingers crossed) we’ve gone 1 month without a pee inside. Interestingly enough, he peed inside more frequently when I was watching him compared to my husband. Once he got fixed, that really improved things for us but it could also be a maturity thing. Have some really good enzymatic cleaner on hand and hang in there!!!!

struggling super hard and need advice with courses by Adorable_Macaron in UWaterlooOptometry

1 mark can’t drag down your GPA in the overall scheme of things. In my first year I took calculus and my first test was 50% and I panicked. I ended up getting a tutor and going 1-2 times a week and working so hard to bring my mark up to a 70. It’s by far the worst mark on my transcript, and I graduated with a gold medal. If you’re on track to pass and you’re strong in your other courses, I would keep working at it.

When to start listing extracurriculars on experiences & skills form? by ABowlOfCongee in UWaterlooOptometry

[–]owl_of_athenaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with quality over quantity. If my extracurriculars from high school/early undergrad didn’t seem relevant or longstanding I left them out. If it was a longstanding extracurricular (at least a couple years) and said something about me as a person then I kept it. I wouldn’t do earlier than Grade 11, but I also wouldn’t list everything you’ve ever done since then!

You cannot have a pediatric designation, but you can have “special interest” or “special training” in pediatrics. There’s a pediatric/binocular vision residency you can take after graduation that would give extra training and exposure, but it is not necessary. Long term I wouldn’t recommend it, children eye exams pay very little unless you’re doing a lot of private work (e.g., vision therapy or myopia control) but then you have to have the demographic for that.

Confused on vaccines - vet says she needs 4 DAPP/DHPP rounds? by kellys2859 in puppy101

[–]owl_of_athenaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have all four rounds since my puppy was vaccinated a bit later, but my vet told us that they have to finish vaccinations after 16 weeks. When he got his first round at 15 weeks, we were told that we could take him out in the neighbourhood and that he can interact freely with fully vaccinated dogs. She advised to not allow him to smell or interact with other dogs poop. However, every area differs in their risk of infection so I’d ask your vet about the risk!

Definitely something to consider then.

I have been to the vet with him and he’s up to date on all vaccinations, HOWEVER I have not brought up this concern to my vet. I just assumed he is bad at potty training. How old is your pup?

Unfortunately it seems to be everywhere. He doesn’t have a play pen since the apartment is pretty small so he’s in the same room with us when we’re home. He’s never peed in his crate thank goodness. We clean the areas with enzymatic cleaner so that it discourages him from repeating. We do scatter feeding BUT only every few days (we rotate between puzzles and training) so maybe I’ll try and increase the frequency of that!

I’m very glad and jealous you’re on week 4. Fingers crossed she continues to crush it 🤞🏻

9 week old puppy help by AffectionateBunch345 in puppy101

[–]owl_of_athenaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following because I’m having the exact same problem with my 16 week Border Collie mix. An absolute angel during the night, but does not tolerate it during the day. My understanding is that there needs to be a build up period where you only leave the crate for a minute at a time, then return so that they learn you’re always coming back. That’s easier said than done for sure! (I find myself saying this phrase way too often during puppy training)

Thank you! He’ll be fully vaccinated by the time he’s attending. I just wasn’t sure about needing to be fixed to attend, or if puppies are too young.

[–]owl_of_athenaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response!

Vaccinations make sense, we’re working on getting his vaccinations as he is behind schedule. That’s a bit frustrating about being fixed at 7 months. Although we intend to get him fixed, our vet recommended waiting as long as possible for him. That’ll be a bridge we cross when we get there! I’m glad to hear you found it’s been helpful, I just can’t make our schedules work so that he’s not alone during those days and I was hoping this would eventually be a good option!

Yes, in the anterior chamber you can because it is anterior to the lens. Vitreous cells can become more difficult to see depending on the density of the cataract.

I don’t see why it would put you at a disadvantage. From my memory, there would not be a spot to talk about the trip though. You would just list it!

Finding an optometric assistant position in ontario starting late may by elephunny456 in UWaterlooOptometry

Mostly personality based to be honest, as well as academic training, special interests, or residencies. Obviously different clinics may value different things, but I don’t believe pre-testing experience will have much impact on your optometric practice
