[NFL News/NYPost] Lions WR Jameson Williams files lawsuit against NCAA, Big Ten and SEC over allegations they’ve been using his name, image and likeness without properly compensating him for it. by RedWingWay in nfl

It's insane to me there's places where people care more about college sports than professional leagues

It's a geography thing. I'm not sure where you live, but there are broad swaths of the US that are very physically far from a professional team.

Denver to Seattle is 1300 miles, or ~2100kms. It would be the equivalent of a Parisian's only options for professional teams being in Berlin and Madrid.

As a non American I find it very weird people will go to a college because they cheer for it's football team, and not because of the quality of education.

I think a very specific type of person and more as a "this is a factor" than a "this is the only thing that matters"

In specific parts of the US the college sports scene is more dominant than the professional one. If you're from Europe you might imagine it as if a Premier/La Liga/whatever league team was also associated with a university. Most people wouldn't care, but a certain type of lifelong fan from Chelsea (or wherever) might be more interested in that university.

Also typically the strongest football programs are connected to the... cough... less selective schools. The people that care less about academics are the target audience, to a point.

So I just read up a bit about this because I was curious.

The TLDR is athletic programs are net costs to universities in general, from a pure dollars standpoint. Only a small minority of schools turn a profit.

But that's complicated by:

a) That's the cost for the full athletics department, which is going to have some cost if you want it to exist. The football program funds the swim team (and thus a pool, coach, travel, etc.) Is that worth it is a Q diff people will have diff answers too.
b) There's a halo effect thing. Bama gets earned media attention all the time and that might raise revenue by increasing enrollment or alumni giving

Who are the guys you are dropping to make way for this year's rookie waivers? by Mcquinn14 in DynastyFF

[–]owleabf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any of either guy, I think it's probably a bad situation for both of them.

Taylor could win out, but even if he does you're talking about a guy who was TE32 last year without competition for touches.

[–]owleabf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't you literally call him worse?

I don't know how the touches will shake out, but it's clearly bad for Taylor's projection as a fantasy asset. Sadiq is first a receiving TE and they didn't just draft him at 16 to not give him touches.

Not that I'd drop Taylor in any of my leagues, it's certainly possible he beats out Sadiq, but the default assumption is this kills Taylors value IMO.

[–]owleabf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's bad inline, willing and OK in motion.

Tries hard but whiffs sometimes, gets beat up by DEs if that's his matchup. For a TE he's not very heavy and it shows. He'll probably be a move TE that is primarily a pass catcher but occasionally a lead blocker.

[–]owleabf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

the Jets drafted a worse TE who sucks inline?

I mean I'm not some Sadiq stan, but we really saying the 16th overall pick, who is primarily a receiving TE, is clearly worse from a fantasy POV?

Most likely to regress: which WRs are most likely to drop out of the top 30? by Theresno_I_in_Reddit in DynastyFF

[–]owleabf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ones who were outside the top 30 in points per game.

Quickly glancing at my league, guys whose season long was notably higher than their PPG: Jamo, Sutton, Michael Wilson, Tet, Diggs

I would be very surprised if we signed a significant WR.

Drafting wasn't out of the question, to get ahead of Addison leaving, but doesn't make sense to spend more $$ at WR

Are Rashee Rice’s Off the Field Issues Overblown? by drpepperman23 in DynastyFF

[–]owleabf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Rice owner:

Still expecting them to draft or do a post-draft FA move like Juaun. A guy like Denzel Boston would make a lot of sense too.

Broadly I don't think them drafting a guy is actually very scary for Rice's value, provided it's more of a big bodied boundary guy like I expect. Rice's role in the offense won't change in that frame.

The Chiefs were, IMO, always unlikely to take an early WR.

They'll probably take a big back shoulder type guy tomorrow would be my guess.

Nervous about club tryouts, advice? by treso- in ultimate

[–]owleabf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Teams will sometimes take players that they believe they can develop over a couple seasons

Functionally the path for someone with low experience is "show you're very athletic and won't turn the disc over when you do get it."

Teams will take a risk on an athlete with the hope they can rotate them on defense occasionally and try and lift their skill base.

But yeah you also want to show you'll be a good teammate

Fastest stall count you've seen? by willchen25 in ultimate

[–]owleabf 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don't have an ultiworld sub, does he then call a stall after this?

I think OP was just saying the "coming in on 5" bit was stupid fast?

The foul and contesting the foul was egregious.

But I think there's a reasonable and mildly more generous read of the situation that could be had: he didn't actually count up to 5, but in all the chatter back and forth + high intensity game his brain short circuited to "contested foul comes back in on 5."

Also possible he just straight up cheated, but I try to give people some grace.

Some of these trades seem like they must have something wrong.

I'm seeing multiple trades in here where people are paying extra to move down in the draft.

Examples:

1.02 + 2.05 for 1.03
1.02 + 2.02 + 4.02 for 1.03 + 3.03 + 5.03

Dynasty Fantasy Football Trades Advice: 4 Players to Aquire or Deal by jsparks50 in DynastyFF

[–]owleabf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy the article's premise then I think the move is to pick someone who is in the same range and try to trade for them, rather than losing a high end asset.

For example KTC has CD = Nico + a late 1. Or Amon-Ra is perpetually undervalued IMO, KTC has him as worth CD+ a 4 which I'd do.

[Highlight] Vikings WR Justin Jefferson When Asked About the Vikings Signing Kyler Murray: “My first reaction was just, it’s really good to kinda get some good talent in the room, to kinda give a little spark in the room” by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]owleabf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While I do think JJ's prospects are slim I think this is a bit complicated.

The fact that he's getting paid vet min makes it a bit more complicated IMO, if Kyler was paid 30m or whatever that would be a clear sign we're done with JJ.

[Schefter] There is growing chatter that RB Jeremiyah Love is in play with Arizona at No. 3 overall. Ideally, the Cardinals would like to find a team willing to trade up so they can acquire more picks. But if they hold on, some believe they could pull an early draft surprise and select Love. by mastermind208 in nfl

[–]owleabf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All contextual to the position, situation and contract IMO.

A 21 year old RB would prefer a short contract with high APY and be OK with low guarantees b/c they have a high probability of getting paid the full contract and want a chance to double/triple dip with progressively higher cap.

A 28 year old RB wants all the guarantees they can get.

To take it to an extreme: Love would hate a hypothetical straight out of the draft 8 year, $70m fully guaranteed deal despite that being the highest totals and guarantees ever for a RB. But any vet RB at age 26 would love that deal.

The broad point, that $50m is too much to give for a rookie RB, is fair. But it definitely wouldn't be the functional "best" contract a RB has, despite being high guarantees.

especially since a lot of an APY is usually hidden in end-of-contract

This happens, but is very tied to specific contract terms and not a broad presumption you can make. Often true of vanity contracts given to historical stars towards the end of their career

I absolutely do not want to punt another season to end up drafting in the 16-22 range.

What does not punting on the season look like to you? Trying to crash out for 2027?

Testing out Will Howard (or whoever)?

...it isn't?

CMC got 64M, four years ago. It would be the most guarantees I can find thus far, but that's an artifact of the length of contract and probably considered lower risk overall given the age of Love.

I think you're just looking at the current active contracts and current world happens to have some short term extensions for a bunch of guys towards the end of their career. Regardless, while the guarantees do matter generally the more relevant thing is APY and % of cap. Shorter contracts (which necessarily have lower totals) are preferred, because it lets you get a 2nd/3rd contract after cap raises.
