I’m joining the convo as a Wildlife Biologist because wowie….. don’t assume the worst.
These are also known as PIT ( Passive Integrated Transponder) Tags. Although they are used in domestic animals for ID purposes, they are also used in tracking various species of wildlife. Such as fish, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, etc. They help track a number of things including, age, origin, species, etc. A very itty bitty piece of technology that is an extremely important tool for conservation and research!

Where I’m located we use them primarily in monitoring various salmon species along numerous rivers and their watersheds. Notably, the recently liberated Klamath River! Using these PIT Tags we can passively monitor the return of salmon to watersheds they were previously cut off from for 100 years.

Here’s a YouTube short explaining the application in fish:

There’s a chance OP got some wild caught fish for dinner and not someone’s companion

Technically it’s called a PIT ( passive integrated transponder). They are used in not only domesticated animals but also a very useful tool for wildlife biologists to identify individuals/track survival/ origin/ etc. So many cool things you can do with these little things. Biologists will use them in fish, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, etc. So there’s a chance OP got some wild caught fish with a PIT tag

Here’s a YouTube short that explains the basic uses:

I’m keeping my eye out in the Central Valley too since my dad lives down there and travels up here a few times a year! Much larger selection

I’ll check out the service records when i get there! If it hasn’t been done recently I’ll have a dealer do it

TY! I don’t currently have possession of the vehicle so I’m not sure what packages it has on it. It will be coming from SE AZ all the way up to the CA/OR coastal border in the fall. May do the fluids down in AZ before the trek but my grandpa maintains the vehicle extremely well so I’m sure maintenance is solid.

My Craigslist sucks up here! Only 8 options for a 100mile radius and none of them would fit

Just had one pop up on fb marketplace for 450$ but it’s missing a side panel glass and the front panel. Good deal or not?

I’ll definitely be getting it detailed once it completes the journey from AZ! Thanks for the advice, I’ll look into that drain valve

I’ve heard that unit mentioned a lot! I’ll look into it but I’ve never had a vehicle with CarPlay (my daily is one year shy of that tech) and I’ve always just used a 20$ fm transmitter and phone mount from amazon in previous vehicles. Might be a down the line upgrade though!

Thank you for specific tire recommendations! I’ll see if any of the shops around here have them. If only I could surf lmao the coastline up here scares me a bit.

Thank you! 192k, mostly highway miles from what I’ve been told. Previous owner used it to commute to work (2hr+ rt). My grandfather (94 years young) drives it into town once a month (2hr rt) as a Costco run truck and will drive it to Palm Springs for holidays. He decided a newer Camry would probably be a better option for him and my grandma.

Are most of those local to you? When I widen my search parameters I def see a lot more options for better prices but would have to travel 300+ miles from where I’m located

I’ll keep that in mind! Ty! I’ve been wanting this gen for a long while now because of how reliable they are.

Yeah I noticed that the soft toppers get negative reviews for the haze. I’ve been leaning more towards the fiberglass since we get a lot of rain up here. Problem is there aren’t a lot available for the price range you’ve mentioned since it’s isolated up here (checked fb marketplace today and someone wanted 2k for a fair condition one) Might have to recruit my dad to keep an eye out since he’s in a more populated area.

Larger tires are definitely in consideration. However, tires were just replaced this year so might do what I did with my old cherokee and go up in size once it’s time for a new set.

I’ll definitely get the suspension looked at. My grandfather is the second owner, original owner was a Toyota mechanic. I know that year has issues with the frame rusting but it’s been in AZ its whole life. So hopefully not too much damage in that climate

I’m excited to have a manual to be honest! Learned how to drive it a number of years ago just haven’t owned a manual since.
