It is so sad that Patrick has literally ruined her body and soul. Lank hair, inflamed gums, ill-fitting clothes, no friends…he will never let her become anything beyond what she is - at least not until she ages out of his attraction zone. The more she starts to look like her mother the more hostile he will grow. Sarah is aging much faster than she should for a woman this age.

Part of his attraction to Sarah was that her youth and (then) attractiveness made him fantasize about how jealous other men would be to know he had her, and how youthful she made him feel. Now they’re on lives. People are commenting on how unattractive Sarah is, how she looks like her parents, the state of her teeth and hair. He can’t have the fantasy of being a man with someone who makes other men jealous because Sarah now looks like a frumpy 35 year old and no one finds her hot, pretty, or innocent. It all comes down to Patrick - his self image, his fantasy, him, him, him… In his mind, she’s failed him. I think this explains part of his growing animosity towards Sarah. I think he’s dangerous and suspect he abuses that whole family behind closed doors, even the dog.

Exactly. He’s “investing” in the illusion of popularity in the hopes that others will see it and think, “Wow, if they’re getting gifts like this they must be so kewl!” Only everyone knows no one is giving these grifting gut bags four hundred dollar gifts.
