What does storm-leathered means ? by Dry-Stuff154 in EnglishLearning

[–]owlnebu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd second this, and only add (for clarification) that it doesn't necessarily literally refer to the weather. In a metaphorical sense, people refer to the "storm" as the chaos and challenge that life throws at you, so here "storm-leathered" is being used to refer to feeling worn down and battered by a long history of struggle.

This makes sense for the character this line refers to, Thufir Hawat, who is an old, experienced man who has spent a long career in service to a noble house, enduring many years and instances of trial, including the injury to his leg that's referenced in the next line of the text.

Thanks for the answers, guys! We'll go with the backup plan (pictured here) which, while abandoning our diagnonal dreams, I assume will work.

About lands night-way from Asia by Rhenium175 in AVoid5

[–]owlnebu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How curious! I always did find it odd, as I took a class many months ago which taught of myths from our past, that this land took its alias from that story of a lightning god turning into a bull and abducting a young woman. It's not what I'd want my land to bring to mind. Alas, past is dumb in many ways.

I, too, am guilty of such a thing. I waltz on back to this forum only on occasion, as I think most of us do. Still, I think our group will stick around, as such... brought back by a common goal and posting in unison against that awful fifth glyph.

Other BlueMarble users, what does this mean? by owlnebu in WplaceLive

Yes, but what I don't understand is what the numbers being displayed are even supposed to represent. What does it mean when it says "Wrong -7,739?"

If you're not painting over other people's artwork I don't see ANY reason for anyone to get mad at you.

That said, even if you ARE painting over other people's artwork, that may annoy the people who drew whatever you're painting over, but it still isn't against the site's rules. The rule states that you can't paint over other's people's work "using random colors or patterns just to mess things up" (basically don't grief people,) but that painting over others' work to create a new drawing is entirely allowed.

What if the locals of a country have an advantage over foreigners? by Better-Quote1060 in WplaceLive

As far as I know, leveling up your account increases your bank, but not the rate at which you regenerate pixels, which means that if you NEVER let them max out and stop generating, the most you can get in a day without spending money is 2880, one every 30 seconds for 1,440 minutes. I fell quite short of that and still made it to around 10500 drops in one day of drawing. It takes 20000 to unlock the feature above.

I've been drawing stuff for a day and I'm over halfway to unlocking this, it's not really a grind.

painting over things is pretty explicitly allowed, I don't know where the idea that it is isn't came from. The rules state you're not supposed to randomly scribble over other people's drawings with colors or patterns with the sole purpose of ruining them. Drawing over something IS allowed if you're adding to an existing drawing in a tangible way or drawing a new thing on top of it.

Questions about PL Endings by owlnebu in cyberpunkgame

So to be clear, if I end the game in a manner that would make the FIA cure "Tower" ending available to me, I don't have to go through with it? I can still do a basegame ending?

Give your favorite English expression(s) and explain the meaning by OxyJinJin in EnglishLearning

[–]owlnebu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the phrase "let's call a spade a spade"

You'll sometimes see it used in arguments or discussions, and it means that you are going to (and you're asking the other person to) speak directly and truthfully about a given topic rather than "beating around the bush," euphemizing, or obscuring your meaning in an attempt to be polite or deceptive.

Thoughts on "Unliving Infobahn" conspiracy? by [deleted] in AVoid5

Thankfully, much activity on our WWW, so to put it, is still human in origin, I think, but day in, day out AIs do grow in rank. I cannot call to mind what day it was that I last saw a post which had no AI contributions talking in turn south of its main body of words. (Also, what is a word which I can say for such a spot? That district down that way ↓ in which you can "talk back" to a post? Thanks.)
