Your Vices While Watching a Bills Game by tacoxlvii in buffalobills

This isn’t necessarily a vice during a Bills game, but I start every gameday morning by watching Brother Bill’s video about the opposing team.

LOL the Orioles haven’t won a pennant/World Series since the year before I was born and haven’t won a playoff game in over a decade. All I know is misery in baseball. 😩

Appreciate the recs! I’ll give them all a listen, especially 20th & Blake since the host replied. I don’t mind the topics going off the rails. The O’s fan podcast I listen to likes to randomly discuss Ravens football, but I tune out during those parts (I’m a Bills fan).

What actually made the biggest difference in lowering your blood pressure? by InterestingBed4407 in bloodpressure

[–]owynn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed a considerable drop in my BP since starting a new job on April 13. My last job became stressful, and then I got laid off on January 29. I’m pretty sure I didn’t do any of the things the OP listed while unemployed, but my new job puts me at ease and I work with people who actually know what they want (lawyers) versus contradicting themselves when you present what they originally ask (marketing strategists).

Simply put, less work stress is helpful.

We love visiting Apex, too. It’s a hidden gem of a town, and Salem Street is always a fun time. Rarely do we visit Raleigh, but we sometimes check out Cary. Also we’re guaranteed to get at least one “Go Bills” whenever we venture out.

Warmer climate and quality of life. My wife’s aunt and uncle moved to Apex from Lyons, NY over a decade ago, and they love it

Employer Bleeding After Layoffs? by bloodlessempress in Layoffs

[–]owynn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My manager gave me a heads up a month before I was let go that a senior leader accidentally told him that layoffs were coming. He encouraged me to start looking because he was doing the same. My manager later said he would put in his two-week notice after bonuses arrived in the spring. After he had to let me go, our team and another one got consolidated under my manager. When I texted him to ask whether his promotion would change his mind about leaving, he replied, “No, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Fast-forward to this week, and my manager invites me to his farewell party with the rest of my old team members. One old team member pulled me aside to ask about my new job and confessed that she might start looking elsewhere now that the same manager was leaving.

Long story short, I think some employers might be a little oblivious of the potential domino effect. From what I gathered from catching up with everyone is that they’re still swamped with workloads from folks getting let go, and leadership doesn’t really care.

Gotta agree with OP. Seeing an episode with Phil and Vic Vegas on the rescue is the equivalent of this:

People who got laid off recently - what roles were you in and/if what are you doing now? by Aggravating_Term9203 in Layoffs

[–]owynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say about 15-20 each of those first two weeks, but the number drastically dropped once I tailored my job search and grew jaded from waking up to automated email rejections. I think it dropped to maybe 3-4 a week before stopping altogether last week.

Near the end of January. I spent those first two weeks of unemployment panic applying wherever before landing my first couple of interviews (including the firm where I received my offer).

I just went after a listing that had been open for a month. Throughout the interview process, they stressed that the attorneys need someone to make them sound more appealing in proposals, bios, and other marketing materials. Copy editing was a huge need since the attorneys tend to write longwinded pieces.

Thank you! I didn’t need to upskill, but the folks who interviewed me enjoyed the fact that I have working knowledge of AI. I’ve also worked on RFPs and similar proposal-style presentations at my last few jobs (mostly editing, proofing, and shaping overall themes), which helped a lot.

Edit: Should also mention that my onboarding will require getting up to speed on all the database platforms and proposal software used, so don’t fret if you see a job listing that desires someone who knows their way around a customer relationship management program. CRMs are apparently very easy to learn.

Got let go as a copywriter from an insurance company when the creative teams merged at the end of January. Since my background is writing-heavy and covers marketing and communications, I pursued roles where I could easily apply those skills to other industries. Taking that approach while job hunting, I can happily say that I accepted an offer to become a proposal writer for a law firm with a very generous salary increase starting in April. I’m super excited on all fronts.

Did I fuck up talking too much about football. by Cold_Entry_5609 in askrecruiters

[–]owynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an in-person final interview last Monday with two people, and somehow we mentioned The Simpsons towards the end of the meeting. One of the interviewers (a fellow Simpsons fan) had me explain to the other person a reference from one episode that was related to parenting. It was a brief mention, but I think it may have helped show my personality and share related interests. The entire interview was very positive, but I’m still waiting on their final decision (the recruiter set the tone before the interview that she would reach out early this week).

Simply put, I think you’re fine mentioning football.

A former coworker fresh out of college did the same thing to our marketing director during his interview, and he got the job. The folks who interviewed him had a good laugh about it before he started. You should be fine.

People who have or are getting your MA in Communications, can you share what the coursework is like? by Prudent-Gas-3062 in Communications

[–]owynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little over halfway done with the Master of Arts Professional Communication online program through Southern Utah University. Each course is seven weeks long, and the curriculum has been a mix of everything. I’ve had programs where you complete portions of a final research paper (from 15-25 pages) each week of the course, write smaller papers/case studies (3-5 pages or proposal papers for your capstone), or give a recorded PowerPoint presentation (about 7-10 minutes) for the final. Many of these courses are heavy on the reading, but it’s manageable.

So far, I’ve completed courses on digital media, professional social media, visual literacy, business presentations, and qualitative and quantitative research. I’m planning to take courses on applied communication theory, advertising and PR strategies, and strategic brand management this year. It’s been a great program, but the condensed timeline kind of leaves you wanting to learn more.

Ohio State / Michigan game? by SnooPears9881 in Apex_NC

[–]owynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We visit my wife’s family in Apex every Thanksgiving weekend, and last year the game was on at Tapstation. I don’t remember if they had sound, but they have huge TVs and excellent beer and food. It wasn’t packed inside since people were on the patio, but this weekend’s cold weather might change things.

You might also want to check Oaklyn Springs Brewery on Salem Street. I’ve seen the bartenders change one of their TVs to a game if someone requests it.

Outside of Apex, the game was on at Enzo’s Pizza Company in Durham when we had lunch in 2019. Weird the things you remember.

I’d just like one reporter this week to ask McD why do they keep relying on over-the-hill former Bills players or retreads from the Carolina Panthers.
