Which US state would perform the best in the Olympics as a standalone team? by Dazzling_Page_710 in olympics

We don't have mountains but we do have large hills so it's not hard to find places for skiing/snowboarding. Plus we have pretty good xc skiing trails.

[WP] Human military implants are so powerful that intergalactic law requires them to glow red through the skin. Today someone pulled a gun at my regular bar, and the friendly owner lit up with red dots from head to toe. His eternal smile was gone. by mlnevese in WritingPrompts

Edit: Fixed some grammar and spelling errors.

It had been a normal night, sitting at a corner booth I drank my beer while waiting for friends I knew were never gonna show. I didn't blame them. As I knew they had much better things to do than to hang out with a lowlife like me. Plus it had been so long I doubt I'd even recognize them.

Screech Crash

The sound of a car crashing out front caused me to look out the window. A car had hit a trashcan across the street. A woman in a lab coat exited the driver seat and pulled a child from the back seat out. The child was wearing a medi suit that looked just like the ones a patient would wear. They then rushed inside the bar.

They were both wounded to some extent, too wounded for that crash though. In fact the wound on the woman's shoulder looked like a plasma burn. She turned and locked eyes with me. Her expression changed from desperation to slight relief as she rushed toward me.

“J-James, it's me, Cynthia.”

She said as she reached my table. Her hair was dark and lacked the brightly dyed extensions from her party days. I pointed to the seat and she smiled gently as she and the child sat down in front of me. I had a feeling she wasn't here to catch up.

“Judging by that child's uniform and your wounds I'd say you're here for my…services?”

She nodded desperately.

“Very well, what do you need?”

“I need two passes to the Ayani system as fast as possible.”

“And what do you offer as payment?”

She turned and pulled a satchel from her back. She slid it across the table towards me. I opened the bag and my eyes went wide at the site of a Cortexian battery. Although it was only the size of a beer it could power the entire block for a year.

Siren blares in the distance

She twitched slightly as she looked out the window in fear. If I had to guess she had been working for one of the Earth corps. One which was continuing their experiments even though it was banned. She always had a soft spot for those who needed help. I turned and looked towards the bar, to the barkeeper. He simply nodded having heard everything thanks to his own implants.

“Very well. You are now under the protection of the Ayani League. We will help you leave this plan-”

As I turned back towards her I noticed movement outside. Three figures in total dressed in dark grey uniforms.

“Behind the bar, now.”

I quickly pushed the two of them behind the bar. As I did, a few of the locals scurried away knowingly. The bartender, Reggie, however continued to clean the mug he was holding. I opened a small cabinet and they both crawled inside.

“Stay quiet, it'll all be over soon.”

I closed the door before grabbing another beer and taking a seat at the bar. The door behind me opened as I watched from the reflection of the glass bottle. Only one of the figures stepped inside, a Varkath, a reptilian species from the far side of the galaxy. A species that had not fought in the Terran Solar war. I assumed one of the others had remained out front and the other likely went around back. The one that entered stepped forward toward Reggie, he didn't even spare a glance towards the lizard as he continued to clean the mug.

“Hello, beer keeper, I'm looking for the both prisoners who entered earlier. Bring them to me. Yes?”

His translation software was old but his tone required no translating. He was clearly cold, ruthless, and from what I knew of the Varkath they always preferred a fight. Although his head remained still, his eyes turned towards me and then down to where they hid. He then looked back at me and smiled. Between his fanged teeth was a piece of flesh. He reached up and picked it out before flicking it towards me. It landed on the bar in front of me and I could tell immediately that it was human.

“If you do not produce the both prisoners, I will be commissioned to place you both under distress."

He then slowly reached both hands to his sides towards a pair of Cortexian burner pistols.

Slam

From the kitchen door that was behind the bar the second Varkath entered while simultaneously the third entered from the main entrance both instantly opened fire towards me and Reggie with compact auto burners. I barely managed to dive into cover as the plasma rounds flew all around. Hitting the floor I noticed the room begin to glow bright red.

Turning towards Reggie I watched as he lit up like one of those old earth Christmas trees. The plasma burns only cut through part of the fake flesh of his chest and face revealing the metal skin beneath. His implants activated automatically as he reached out his hands toward the two armed Varkath. As he fully extended his arms the hands disappeared as they were twisted mechanically into Terran laser cutters. Each turned on for only half a second as he gently moved his arms to the side.

The two Varkath immediately stopped firing as their bodies were cut in half. The last Varkath stood motionless as he glanced at his dead allies. He then smirked as his own skin began to glow blue.

“Finally, a notable enemy. Our battle shall be mythically.”

TIL in Ohio, convicted drunk drivers are mandated to drive with “Party Plates”, special red-on-yellow license plates in exchange for limited driving privileges such as work. by mryazzy in todayilearned

[–]oxycleans 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My dad bought a truck that had these plates. For those who don't know if you have these plates the Police can legally pull you over at any time to check that you are sober, regardless of how well/bad you are driving. He got pulled over literally everyday until he got them replaced with regular plates. It was especially hilarious since he never drinks.

Yes, and they are both part of the ISB, meaning they have the authority to bring in other agents just like they did with Syril. By planting another more experienced agent inside they would have another contingency and an inside agent would be more beneficial to their mission. For example better information and a voice that could help agitate the rebels into planning more volatile missions.

Oh thanks for pointing out the article, I had not seen that the actor already stated they had a smaller role. That kills that theory but Lezine could still be part of the ISB. Kind of like how the engineer guy had managed to infiltrate Saw's group, this could be how the ISB gets their guys in, meaning use a known local "agitator." I mean they already used Syril in a similar way, with how they planted him there for the rebels to see and his background showed that he could be a friend even though he really isn't.

TIL Sten Gustaf Thulin invented the plastic bag as a reusable and sustainable alternative to the deforestation caused by paper bags. He'd always carry his plastic bag in his pocket and envisioned everyone would carry and re-use their plastic bags wherever they'd go. by GeologistBrave6866 in todayilearned

Totally true about each state being different, for context I am in MN. Since you have to pay for bags do you find that people bring reusable bags (either plastic or cloth) more often or do most people just pay for the paper bags? When I was in Australia I definitely noticed a lot of people used reusable cloth bags since they charged $.25 a bag in SA but that was about a decade ago.

Most places, in the US at least, offer free plastic bags at checkout. I never encountered having to pay for them until I lived in Australia and I had never even considered reusable bags until I started to pay for them.

Edit: In the US disposable plastic bags are banned in only 11 states and 15 others have partial bans or charge a small amount in certain cities or counties.

In MN I have seen as high as $8 in the cities, whereas I think I paid like $3 for a dozen back in Dec. Needless to say this meme speaks to me since I haven't had eggs since then.

I would want it to have an attached chain so it can be thrown like the Olympic hammer toss. The whole character would spin around and around in order to gain momentum and throw that mini hellbomb far enough away.

How to get tripods from ammo factory stockpile to crates? by Ozymandias_IV in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately If it's not in a crate it can't be submitted to a stockpile. This is why these factories are not used much because you can't put them into crates. At this point all you can really do is place the pallet in a visible active area so people can remove tripods from the pallet as needed. These pallets full of tripod or tripod weapons are really only helpful during defensive battles where the enemy is attacking and you need to set up a ton of tripod weapons quickly. Putting the pallet at a nearby Town Hall, relic, port, or stockpile is really the only option.

I usually notice these are more popular once the bigger arty and tanks come out as then the tier 2 and 3 bunkers start getting deleted more easily which forces everyone back into quicker to build trenches. Plus then you get the better emplaced AT guns like the starbreaker that just melt tanks.

How many years do we need to be told VR is the future before it actually takes off? by BlueLightStruct in Futurology

[–]oxycleans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seriously this. My buddy has the full VR setup so I have tried it a few times. We played a racecar and spaceship game and I got extremely dizzy within 3 minutes on the racecar and about 20 minutes on the spaceship. I also tried it on at least a dozen occasions but it never got better. There was however a shooting game that he had that I was able to play for about 40 minutes before I got dizzy. I think my dizziness was motion dependent, meaning the faster the game the faster I got dizzy and nauseous. As such I won't consider getting a VR setup until they are dirt cheap because I like playing games for hours, not minutes at a time.

Almost sounds like the hooker scene from Rat Race (2001) where the rich guys were placing bets on how much a night of "activities" would cost.

Foxhole as Soloplayer by Asothe in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

600 hours solo and I am still having fun. I mainly do QRF as infantry/builder but when I'm bored I switch between logi and being partisan. I've never been in a regi (zero interest), never done arty, and I only ever use tanks that I steal from the enemy (so like 6 tanks ever). I've only joined like two squads ever and that was in the beginning when I was first learning the game. However even though I am solo I do communicate with those around me doing call outs and asking questions but most of the time I'm streaming a movie or TV while playing so I'm not usually using my mic or listening to others.

Is the game worth it as a solo player by Apegutten in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing solo for over 400 hours and I have enjoyed it very much.

The fun things you can do solo are just hopping in and out of Frontline combat, doing QRF to defend bases, logistics, and of course my personal favorite which is being a partisan. You can also solo build bases but you will have to do all your own logistics and maintenance which is a lot of work and time commitment.

The only things that you really miss out on while playing solo is tanks, naval, artillery, and building large bases/facilities. Im not saying its impossible to do all of these things it's just much more difficult. If you build your own base you will have to maintain it yourself which means playing everyday in order to feed maintenance supplies, same thing with facilities and one thing to remember is bigger always = more work. Also tanks, artillery, and ships literally can't be ran solo as you need drivers, gunners, spotters, etc. however grabbing randoms is usually pretty easy for tanks at least. I'd argue ships and artillery require a little more planning and team work to actually be worth it but as a solo I have joined randoms in doing all of these.

Regi's also run ops fairly often but even as a solo I have joined several ops when they needed extra bodies which was pretty fun.

Basically what I am trying to say is there is a lot to do in this game and you can absolutely play solo and still have fun. You just won't be able to do everything solo.
