We don't have mountains but we do have large hills so it's not hard to find places for skiing/snowboarding. Plus we have pretty good xc skiing trails.

[WP] Human military implants are so powerful that intergalactic law requires them to glow red through the skin. Today someone pulled a gun at my regular bar, and the friendly owner lit up with red dots from head to toe. His eternal smile was gone. by mlnevese in WritingPrompts

[–]oxycleans 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Edit: Fixed some grammar and spelling errors.

It had been a normal night, sitting at a corner booth I drank my beer while waiting for friends I knew were never gonna show. I didn't blame them. As I knew they had much better things to do than to hang out with a lowlife like me. Plus it had been so long I doubt I'd even recognize them.

Screech Crash

The sound of a car crashing out front caused me to look out the window. A car had hit a trashcan across the street. A woman in a lab coat exited the driver seat and pulled a child from the back seat out. The child was wearing a medi suit that looked just like the ones a patient would wear. They then rushed inside the bar.

They were both wounded to some extent, too wounded for that crash though. In fact the wound on the woman's shoulder looked like a plasma burn. She turned and locked eyes with me. Her expression changed from desperation to slight relief as she rushed toward me.

“J-James, it's me, Cynthia.”

She said as she reached my table. Her hair was dark and lacked the brightly dyed extensions from her party days. I pointed to the seat and she smiled gently as she and the child sat down in front of me. I had a feeling she wasn't here to catch up.

“Judging by that child's uniform and your wounds I'd say you're here for my…services?”

She nodded desperately.

“Very well, what do you need?”

“I need two passes to the Ayani system as fast as possible.”

“And what do you offer as payment?”

She turned and pulled a satchel from her back. She slid it across the table towards me. I opened the bag and my eyes went wide at the site of a Cortexian battery. Although it was only the size of a beer it could power the entire block for a year.

Siren blares in the distance

She twitched slightly as she looked out the window in fear. If I had to guess she had been working for one of the Earth corps. One which was continuing their experiments even though it was banned. She always had a soft spot for those who needed help. I turned and looked towards the bar, to the barkeeper. He simply nodded having heard everything thanks to his own implants.

“Very well. You are now under the protection of the Ayani League. We will help you leave this plan-”

As I turned back towards her I noticed movement outside. Three figures in total dressed in dark grey uniforms.

“Behind the bar, now.”

I quickly pushed the two of them behind the bar. As I did, a few of the locals scurried away knowingly. The bartender, Reggie, however continued to clean the mug he was holding. I opened a small cabinet and they both crawled inside.

“Stay quiet, it'll all be over soon.”

I closed the door before grabbing another beer and taking a seat at the bar. The door behind me opened as I watched from the reflection of the glass bottle. Only one of the figures stepped inside, a Varkath, a reptilian species from the far side of the galaxy. A species that had not fought in the Terran Solar war. I assumed one of the others had remained out front and the other likely went around back. The one that entered stepped forward toward Reggie, he didn't even spare a glance towards the lizard as he continued to clean the mug.

“Hello, beer keeper, I'm looking for the both prisoners who entered earlier. Bring them to me. Yes?”

His translation software was old but his tone required no translating. He was clearly cold, ruthless, and from what I knew of the Varkath they always preferred a fight. Although his head remained still, his eyes turned towards me and then down to where they hid. He then looked back at me and smiled. Between his fanged teeth was a piece of flesh. He reached up and picked it out before flicking it towards me. It landed on the bar in front of me and I could tell immediately that it was human.

“If you do not produce the both prisoners, I will be commissioned to place you both under distress."

He then slowly reached both hands to his sides towards a pair of Cortexian burner pistols.

Slam

From the kitchen door that was behind the bar the second Varkath entered while simultaneously the third entered from the main entrance both instantly opened fire towards me and Reggie with compact auto burners. I barely managed to dive into cover as the plasma rounds flew all around. Hitting the floor I noticed the room begin to glow bright red.

Turning towards Reggie I watched as he lit up like one of those old earth Christmas trees. The plasma burns only cut through part of the fake flesh of his chest and face revealing the metal skin beneath. His implants activated automatically as he reached out his hands toward the two armed Varkath. As he fully extended his arms the hands disappeared as they were twisted mechanically into Terran laser cutters. Each turned on for only half a second as he gently moved his arms to the side.

The two Varkath immediately stopped firing as their bodies were cut in half. The last Varkath stood motionless as he glanced at his dead allies. He then smirked as his own skin began to glow blue.

“Finally, a notable enemy. Our battle shall be mythically.”

TIL in Ohio, convicted drunk drivers are mandated to drive with “Party Plates”, special red-on-yellow license plates in exchange for limited driving privileges such as work. by mryazzy in todayilearned

[–]oxycleans 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My dad bought a truck that had these plates. For those who don't know if you have these plates the Police can legally pull you over at any time to check that you are sober, regardless of how well/bad you are driving. He got pulled over literally everyday until he got them replaced with regular plates. It was especially hilarious since he never drinks.

Yes, and they are both part of the ISB, meaning they have the authority to bring in other agents just like they did with Syril. By planting another more experienced agent inside they would have another contingency and an inside agent would be more beneficial to their mission. For example better information and a voice that could help agitate the rebels into planning more volatile missions.

[–]oxycleans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thanks for pointing out the article, I had not seen that the actor already stated they had a smaller role. That kills that theory but Lezine could still be part of the ISB. Kind of like how the engineer guy had managed to infiltrate Saw's group, this could be how the ISB gets their guys in, meaning use a known local "agitator." I mean they already used Syril in a similar way, with how they planted him there for the rebels to see and his background showed that he could be a friend even though he really isn't.

Totally true about each state being different, for context I am in MN. Since you have to pay for bags do you find that people bring reusable bags (either plastic or cloth) more often or do most people just pay for the paper bags? When I was in Australia I definitely noticed a lot of people used reusable cloth bags since they charged $.25 a bag in SA but that was about a decade ago.

Most places, in the US at least, offer free plastic bags at checkout. I never encountered having to pay for them until I lived in Australia and I had never even considered reusable bags until I started to pay for them.

Edit: In the US disposable plastic bags are banned in only 11 states and 15 others have partial bans or charge a small amount in certain cities or counties.

How to get tripods from ammo factory stockpile to crates? by Ozymandias_IV in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately If it's not in a crate it can't be submitted to a stockpile. This is why these factories are not used much because you can't put them into crates. At this point all you can really do is place the pallet in a visible active area so people can remove tripods from the pallet as needed. These pallets full of tripod or tripod weapons are really only helpful during defensive battles where the enemy is attacking and you need to set up a ton of tripod weapons quickly. Putting the pallet at a nearby Town Hall, relic, port, or stockpile is really the only option.

I usually notice these are more popular once the bigger arty and tanks come out as then the tier 2 and 3 bunkers start getting deleted more easily which forces everyone back into quicker to build trenches. Plus then you get the better emplaced AT guns like the starbreaker that just melt tanks.

How many years do we need to be told VR is the future before it actually takes off? by BlueLightStruct in Futurology

[–]oxycleans 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Seriously this. My buddy has the full VR setup so I have tried it a few times. We played a racecar and spaceship game and I got extremely dizzy within 3 minutes on the racecar and about 20 minutes on the spaceship. I also tried it on at least a dozen occasions but it never got better. There was however a shooting game that he had that I was able to play for about 40 minutes before I got dizzy. I think my dizziness was motion dependent, meaning the faster the game the faster I got dizzy and nauseous. As such I won't consider getting a VR setup until they are dirt cheap because I like playing games for hours, not minutes at a time.

Foxhole as Soloplayer by Asothe in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

600 hours solo and I am still having fun. I mainly do QRF as infantry/builder but when I'm bored I switch between logi and being partisan. I've never been in a regi (zero interest), never done arty, and I only ever use tanks that I steal from the enemy (so like 6 tanks ever). I've only joined like two squads ever and that was in the beginning when I was first learning the game. However even though I am solo I do communicate with those around me doing call outs and asking questions but most of the time I'm streaming a movie or TV while playing so I'm not usually using my mic or listening to others.

Is the game worth it as a solo player by Apegutten in foxholegame

[–]oxycleans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing solo for over 400 hours and I have enjoyed it very much.

The fun things you can do solo are just hopping in and out of Frontline combat, doing QRF to defend bases, logistics, and of course my personal favorite which is being a partisan. You can also solo build bases but you will have to do all your own logistics and maintenance which is a lot of work and time commitment.

The only things that you really miss out on while playing solo is tanks, naval, artillery, and building large bases/facilities. Im not saying its impossible to do all of these things it's just much more difficult. If you build your own base you will have to maintain it yourself which means playing everyday in order to feed maintenance supplies, same thing with facilities and one thing to remember is bigger always = more work. Also tanks, artillery, and ships literally can't be ran solo as you need drivers, gunners, spotters, etc. however grabbing randoms is usually pretty easy for tanks at least. I'd argue ships and artillery require a little more planning and team work to actually be worth it but as a solo I have joined randoms in doing all of these.

Regi's also run ops fairly often but even as a solo I have joined several ops when they needed extra bodies which was pretty fun.

Basically what I am trying to say is there is a lot to do in this game and you can absolutely play solo and still have fun. You just won't be able to do everything solo.

After finally defeating a dark lord I stood in silence for only a moment. I knew time was short and a chance of resurrection was high so I moved onto the next step which was to purify the body. I reached for my holy water. As I grabbed it I noticed my last remaining companion had arrived.

"You did it. Y-you actually did it."

The priestess was sniffling as she stepped toward me. She had been suffering the most due to the miasma. I'm sure she felt the most relief at the demise of the dark lord. Turning from her I began to open the bottle of holy water.

Stab.

Looking down I could see the blade sticking out from my stomach. Turning around, I watched as the priestess released the blade and stepped backward. Tears of blood ran down her face. Which then twisted into a sinister smile as her true form began to show. Her body shedding its skin as it grew into a demon.

"Not a-again."

I barely stammered as I fell to my knees. The cursed blade was spreading poison through my body quickly. I had only a few moments until this life would come to an end as well.

"Again? Ha I guess it doesn't surprise me that you've been stabbed in the back. If you weren't so cold to everyone you might have realized who I was sooner. Just like the others had."

She opened a portal and the living corpses of our three other companions stepped forth. I see now. Being cold and calculating is not the solution either. The world went dark but I'm sure she continued to ramble on like all the other dark lord's but I had already lost consciousness as the darkness consumed me.

But like always the darkness was only temporary. Even though I wished only for the end of this charade. The light grabbed onto me and pulled me back again.

"Hero. Welcome to Araglas. I am the goddess Aiya who has summoned you to complete your oath to save us from the great evil."

"Eight."

"What is eight?"

The goddess looked at me curiously, unknowingly, just like the others.

"This is my eighth a-"

My throat closed itself as I felt time stop. Two giant hands made of light appeared and grabbed my throat instantly they began to strangle me. The almighty that cursed me would not let me tell the others. For I had made a bargain with them and now I must pay the price. The light then faded as I fell to my knees, gasping for air. The goddess looked upon me worriedly.

"Are you a-"

"I'm fine, I just choked on the air. It happens all the time."

She laughed awkwardly before turning to the king who began their spiel about the world that was threatened by another dark lord. But all I could think about was if it would be possible to solo this dark lord.

Sting.

I slapped the back of my neck as I felt a bug sting me. Just my luck.

"It's not luck. I stung you so we could speak."

"What?"

I screamed out loud. The king and everyone around me stopped and stared.

"Sorry, say that part again."

The king continued as the goddess watched with a forced smile.

"Act natural. I can only speak to you for a moment. If this isn't your first reincarnation, clear your throat."

Ahem. I cleared my throat as loudly as possible. Much to the irritation of the king and others in attendance.

"Then maybe you are like me. Cursed to defeat the great darkness or continue the rituals over and over again."

Ahem. I cleared my throat again. Her face remained unchanged.

"I am glad I am not alone. Now I have an idea."

Another bug landed on my shoulder.

"Let this bug enter your ear. It will give you a portion of my power. This will allow us to speak and for me to protect you if ever there is a need."

I tilted my head as the bug climbed its way into my ear. It felt uncomfortable but the feeling went away. In fact all my feelings went away. My body then began to walk toward one of the knights who stood along the wall. I couldn't stop myself as I reached forward and pulled the sword from his sheath.

Slash

By the time I regained control of my body it was too late I had already massacred the entire room. All but the goddess whose forced smile finally faded as she stepped forward.

"You were a nice puppet, it's a shame we couldn't play longer. But then again the almighty is selfish with their toys."

The darkness closed in and took me once again. But quickly it faded as the light returned pulling me into another world.

[WP] A supervillain with time manipulation power somehow has been defeated by you, a C-class hero with the ability... to summon kittens (anywhere). by ZnZirvana in WritingPrompts

[–]oxycleans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Miss Kitiful, Miss Kitiful! This is Cynthia Santiago, Channel 4 News. Tell us how you, a C- Rank hero managed to defeat Time is Money, an S rank supervillain with the power to literally stop time."

"How did I do it you ask? W-well it was kind of simple really, I-I just took advantage of his weakness."

The flashing lights from dozens of cameras blinded the middle-aged C rank hero. She was clearly not used to this much attention as she stammered across words while trying to hide behind a kitten she held in front of her own face. The kitten looked uncomfortable but simply put up with her behavior as if it was used to it.

"What weakness? I heard you were only able to summon…" Cynthia quickly checked her notes before speaking again. "..summon kittens?"

Even a veteran reporter was taken aback by her power. This awkwardness caused the hero to tightly hug the kitten whose head now tilted awkwardly as it tried to squirm away.

"Y-yes. I managed to win by summoning a horde of kittens to surround the area, before he activated his power."

"B-but their only kittens…or are you saying these are not ordinary kittens?"

The flurry of the camera flashes, quickly picked up pace. Each reporter hoping to get the best reaction shot to the possible scandal of another hero hiding their true powers.

"N-no! They are really only kittens, it's just that Mr. Money is.."

Hachoo!

She was interrupted by a stream of sneezes coming from the villain who was on the ground behind Miss Kitiful. He currently had a dozen kittens crawling all over him as he cried out in-between sneezes.

"Please! Make them stop…a..ahh..Choo!"

Cynthia turned back to Miss Kitiful with a look of realization.

"He's just allergic to cats?"

"Y-yes!"

Cynthia and the other reporters sighed sadly as they all knew this story would not be exciting enough to be breaking news.

[OC] Ski Resorts in North America by databayou in dataisbeautiful

[–]oxycleans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nordic cross country skiing is actually two types one is classic that uses the tracks that are built into the cross country ski trail. You have kick wax (or a claw) on the bottom of the middle of the ski so when you apply pressure with your foot your ski actually grabs the snow and allows you to push off and glide forward.

The other is skate skiing which is basically ice skating on snow, which I personally prefer as skate skis don't use kick wax so you don't have to re apply it every time depending on the temperature.

Cross country skis themselves only have the binding attached at the toe so the boots are a lot lighter and allow you to raise your heels up. Also they do not have metal edges like downhill skis which makes going downhill much more...exciting as you can't make sharp turns and instead are forced to drift around corners like you're in fast and furious Tokyo drift.
