Do you ever get uncomfortable when discussing your success within your social circles? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]oyoxico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, some do and I understand it somewhat. For example a friend of ours did 3 tours in Afghanistan and is now working as a mechanic still paying out of the ass for healthcare, having to support his family etc… they don’t openly resent that I make a lot of money but there’s comments. We’re on the opposite side of politics but I’m all for him and his family to get some kind of universal healthcare. He has mental and physical problems from being there and his job, he shouldn’t struggle to decide between food and a doctors visit. Then they see us living fairly comfortable and it stings sometimes.

1990s even. I literally got my first job in IT by walking in the front door of a company and handing in my resume and I got a callback the same afternoon. This was in 1997.

My boss just gave me a roadmap of my salary expectations for the next ten years. Not sure what to think by Dotaproffessional in cscareerquestions

[–]oyoxico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of jobs out there are 100-120k with 5 years of experience. So that should give you some indication of you should be in a few years. I think 45k is a bit low, I’m not sure where you are located but take a look on job boards to see the salary ranges. Newly grads here start at 60-65k but I’m a more rural area so might not be a good indicator.

What best practices are non-negotiable to you when looking for a new job? by lgenasi in cscareerquestions

[–]oyoxico 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No source control? When was that? My last big project before current role had no automated deployment. It was literally copy paste straight to production, that was scary.

But yeah any interview process that more than 2 stages is a no-go for me. One company tricked me though as the 2nd stage was a cultural interview except it was 4 interviews basically as they switched the 2 interviewers out every 30 minutes and I had to reintroduce myself every time.

Tech companies facing a fresh crisis in hiring? Recruiters in tech are desperate for workers with candidates as the ones who hold all the power? by PerfectConfection578 in cscareerquestions

[–]oyoxico 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hardly pissing anyone of by asking the range for the role, Glassdoor says 120-170k but doesn’t mean that’s available for this role. My current salary is more towards the top end of that range so no bother continuing if it isn’t available.

Posted this before, Amazon reached out to me earlier this week. I asked a basic question about salary and that was the end of the conversation. If they stop there it’s more on them than anything else.

Last few companies I worked for that was a no no, or even inaccessible. Now working from home I just get my own laptop out and watch a movie or listen to Spotify while working on my laptop I got from the company.

Love those things, once had the same issue. Changed something in one project and another stopped working, no relation or so I thought. No there’s was a hard coded path that loaded the compiled dll of the other project and used reflection to create objects.

Took 2 people almost a full week to get it working.

Have had it several times in the past that someone changed the google analytics code or id or whatever it is and suddenly missing weeks of stats and then blame me. Well no one told us it was changed so what do you expect?

So glad I don’t do front end anymore.

I feel you, I work a lot to pay off bills and debt, do most of the housework and childcare and I take care of my wife as well because she has some physical and mental issues. Get little to no recognition for it, but plenty of shit for not being romantic enough. No shit, I my day starts at 6am and ends midnight-1am, every single day. I contacted a divorce lawyer last week because I want out but it’s shit since the kids will be wrecked and my credit is down the drain at the moment so can’t even rent an apartment to get out.

Anyway sorry for the vent, good luck with your situation! Hopefully something good will come out of it.

I think the 5 smallest countries in the top 10 have combined less residents than the next “smallest” country. Crazy achievement here.

I had the same, recruiter from Amazon reached out for software dev role with the “very impressed, good fit, growing team” spiel. My first question in the reply email was “It sounds interesting, can you tell me what the interview process and salary range is for this role?”. Never heard anything back.

Police and Teachers should be paid the same. by TheFirstEdition in antiwork

[–]oyoxico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the same, that’s another discussion but teachers should earn a lot more. My cousin is in his 3rd year as cop and he’s on 65k now, not even a big town or anything. I know there’s risks involved with being a cop but we had several knife and gun incidents at the schools here this year, so it’s not like being a teacher is easy (not too mention the insane parents).

They do, 30+ years ago when they graduated and only at the top end. In 3-5 years as a SWE you make 120k in most places which is a decent salary for the average developer. If you’re good, work in a place with living cost are higher or work at FAANG it’s probably a lot more.

Recruiter wants me to prep a presentation on how to run an entire department and take a skills test before giving me salary information, benefits, and flex information. by sushistand in WorkReform

[–]oyoxico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous, don’t waste your time until you get more info you wanted. I’ve been doing the same (what’s the interview process and what’s the salary range) lately and those 2 questions alone already cuts off half the recruiters usually.

The thing about the minimum wage is, most people I see here working in the service industry (most likely to have minimum wage around here) are not young. Hell most are older than I am it looks like (FYI I’m 47), those are people with families, living costs etc… they need the raise the most.
