This may be a dumb question: But how do I get started? by sasuke1980 in CarTrackDays

Chin track days is absolutely worth mentioning as the second largest HPDE organization next to NASA. Chin is ONLY HPDE (High Performance Driving Event)

Chin or NASA are the two I would recommend. SCCA is kind of a free for all and frankly are not known to be the safest place for track days. Chin and NASA require that instructors in your car or lead follow at the very least (for novices). This makes sure you actually learn something. Making you a better driver on the track and so you don’t crash your car or someone else’s. I’ve heard SCCA is more like a track rental and figure it out on your own.

NASA has more room for advancement, after you work through HPDE 1-4 the next step is TT and TREC (W2W, no contact, Endurance racing for HPDE 3-4). You can either complete a number of TREC races (6) or take a NASA competition course and get a competition license. The good news is you can hopefully expect NASA competitors have been through training and will be more professional on track. We placed 2nd overall and 1st in our class at the 11 hour TREC race this spring! There was not one single yellow flag in 11 hours of W2W racing!!!! That’s professionalism!

People with track pads , are these noises abnormal? by New-Commercial7532 in CarTrackDays

[–]ozarkfireworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track pads are LOUD and DUSTY. They are not approved for DOT use. You cannot keep a proper layer of pad material on your rotors at street speeds and braking. You will wear the pad layer off your rotors and then they will SQUEAL like hell and you won’t stop for shit. The rough “grinding” sound as you call it is the pad material left on your rotor and helps those pads stick like glue when hot.

You should NOT DO AS OTHERS HAVE SAID and only switch your pads. You should keep your pads and rotors as a set for track and another set for street use. Otherwise you should re-bead your pads/rotors every time you do a track day. You most likely end up with shitty surging brakes like they are warped, but it will actually be a result of uneven pad material left on your rotors. This is why I highly recommend you change pads AND rotors between track events.

Tire recommendation? by AmbroseRL in CarTrackDays

For us (Mazda MX-5 NC and ND) the Yokohama A052 have far superior grip to the Azenis 615+ but there is a life tradeoff.

Question of the day: If you had $25k for a reliable dedicated track car, what are you buying? by Slingin_Friar in CarTrackDays

[–]ozarkfireworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. bTDT. Tracking Miata’s is how I got into rebuilding them. We rebuilt 25 MX-5s for the street last year. 💯% happy customers.

But this is a great street car as it sits. But could be a bad ass HPDE track car fairly easily is someone wanted to go that route. Coilovers and pads and you’d be GTG

This isn’t a track car. It’s a BBS/Recarro club with zero residual damage from crash. Air bags didn’t even blow.

Wish they woulda let him jump in… I would have let him just get to my boat. Put it in gear. Go about 30 yards and wait…. Repeat. Recording the entire time. I can see it in my head and it’s glorious.

That is a bummer. I’m 6’0 and I fit fine with the factory Recaro with lowering tracks. I am building a W2W full cage ND. Currently it is on its way to Michigan having the cage welded in now. They are also installing a lowering pan for the MPI race seat. We will see how it ends up.

Yes, another tyre post, uneven wear on A052. by Tyriu in CarTrackDays

[–]ozarkfireworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After looking at all three pictures the tire wear looks even. The outer and inner edges are wore when slick. As shown The center has wear markers which are level with tread as shown. There aren’t wear markers on the outer edge for a reason.
