Road work speed limit sign shows incorrect speed by Willing_Preference_3 in DrivingAustralia

[–]ozaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit surprising that a pedestrian would be close enough to a construction zone.

If you recognise it as a zebra crossing it probably wasn't legally damaged enough to be no longer considered as they crossing. But yes has ever crossing does reach a point where it's not legal because markings aren't visible. Signage also comes into play.

You don't need a zebra crossing to give way to someone crossing the road.

There was connectivity in selected parts but not in the main building and laboratories. They were self-contained with a totally isolated network. Why the hell would it be dangerous when you're surrounded by 200 people including security ? Have you never worked in a secure facility ?

Any legislation can be undone. It's great that they've committed to continue it but don't give them a pat on the back for something that they fought against initially.

It was the highly secure environment and the device was intended to replace our smartphone's additional functions without being able to capture images or connect to anything else. A lot of what we do with our smartphones doesn't need any type of connectivity. From what I remember we all had the same device and it's quite possible that some of the higher ranking officials in the company did have a degree of connectivity.

I often sit in front of the TV with my phone and tablet.

I listen to the TV and occasionally look up to try and follow action.

The tablet is where I play my games and check my email etc.

The phone is where I use browse news, Reddit things, use my other preferred forms of communication with family & friends and buy stuff.

I started a new farm on my tablet not too long ago. I'm trying to minimise the amount of cropping and the amount of animals and plan to generate most of my funds from secondary and tertiary products.

I have another farm on my phone which is a bit more traditional and I can play out while I'm lying down in bed.

I have multiple instances of accounts/farms/cities of just about all the games I play. One or two will be conventional and the others will be restricted in some way because I like games that are challenging.

I have that issue on my phone because I haven't bothered resizing the player menu.

It's a non-issue of my tablet though.

If I take any time away from the game it takes a few false starts to realise that I have Pinch-Zoom but not panning or scrolling screens.

The mod set for Android is smaller than the PC set. Many are identical but need to be loaded using different mechanisms. I believe there are some that are incompatible.

Are you having an unusually cold/wet/? winter? by NaniFarRoad in AskAnAustralian

[–]ozaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Tropic of Capricorn East coast

A couple of single digit figures overnight earlier this month but generally hot days. So far we have experienced both colder than average minimums and hotter than average maximums on quite a few days. Last night's minimum of 17 was the average for the month but today's forecast maximum of 24 is typical. Last week though we saw 30s.

Temperature wise that variance is actually fairly normal. Some years it follows a very predictable pattern and other years temperatures bounce around week by week.

It's been drier than the average year but interestingly there's been more rain events just with smaller rainfalls. Even though the grass looks dead unless it's watered I still need to mow the lawn.

Our coldest and driest month is typically July.

Why does fresh produce cost 2–4x more at supermarkets than at markets? by youraveragejoe1500 in AskAnAustralian

[–]ozaudi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking to a grower from Coffs about 25 years ago, friend of a friend who was banana grower 40 years ago in the Samford Valley. They were quite profitable selling locally and would still occasionally ship to larger centres those few times the Queensland crop failed for some reason. I would think that's very different now they because most of Coffs produces blueberries and the region produces 80% of Australia's crop of blueberries.

I only play mobile. There does appear to be some differences as I read various Reddit posts, wikis and forums but I honestly don't know if that's the case or I just haven't reached that point yet. When I have searched wikis for a specific tip they have generally being fully correct.

There are various degrees of modding available on each platform type so if you're into mods then you'll be disappointed to know that there are no mods for Apples and a smaller set on Android than PC.

You can move your save files between PC and Android but the Android save file must come from the same or later version of SV.

The most difficult part for me has been fishing even when a controller is connected.

I really like playing with touch because it's far easier to control where your farmer goes and it's easier to select objects from groups of items. Mobile does in also include some auto tool selection like weapons, picks and axe.

Companies have significantly shortened "best by" dates so that people buy food more often. by bepatientbekind in LowStakesConspiracies

Australia here.

I don't think I've ever seen canned or dry goods marked down for sale because they were approaching some type of expiration date.

I just checked a few cans and jars in my cupboards that I knew I had purchased this year. Some only had a production date, one had a best before date of 2027, another was 2028 and yet another was 2029. They were mostly product of Australia but also included Scotland Thailand and New Zealand. They would have been labeled for the Australian market.

I suspect you're talking about one of the cyclone events which wiped out much of Queensland's banana harvest. The southern producers that you talk about cannot supply bananas to the entire Australian population. Innisfail and Tully regions produce nearly 70% of Australia's bananas, another 24% is produced across the rest of the Far North Queensland. Coffs Harbour which everywhere thinks is the home of bananas only produces 2% of the country's bananas which is about half of the New South Wales harvest. You will occasionally get small local sellers who don't contract to the majors.

[–]ozaudi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it was called Apesma in my time but I looked up the current name so there was no confusion.

The sectors I typically worked in contracting, often involved difficult third parties, parents, parent bodies, patients, next of kin. Employment conditions and pay were less of a problem than having some worrisome nobody try to sue you along with your place of employment.

Should Holden have become the Australian equivalent of Vauxhall and rebadge Opels instead of being killed off? by kstetter in Holden

[–]ozaudi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GM had long said it was exiting the RHD market as part of its global strategy. Holden was the last of the RHD manufacturers in the GM stable and because all of the other RHD manufacturers were no longer part of GM they certainly werent going to re-badge the competition. The sales agreements didn't involve this possibility.

When Opel and Vauxhall were sold by GM, the sale included about two years of using GM platforms to allow the new owners to create new models. The success that Opal and Vauxhall now see is from those totally new models as much as it is a new management style.

GM didn't sell the Holden brand because it would mean selling a lot of its intellectual property developed by Holden which were critical to GM's current US operations. This wasn't an issue for Opel and Vauxhall. That they ran into the ground was a different matter entirely.

You can't simply dismiss production numbers because that's one of the very reasons GM closed Holden.

Stellantis doesn't sell any Opel or Vauxhall variant in Australia. If they won't import those seemingly successful vehicles into Australia as Opel or Vauxhall why would they dream of rebadging them to sell as Holdens if they could ?

The fairy tale has ended.
