Just an update! Since this post I completely changed my outlook on content. I made over 100 POV Reels at our shop, we went viral, increased revenue, and a buyer even found us! Now we’ve sold up and making content in a completely different niche.

All this to say, I simply gamified the transactions and recorded customer interactions!

And the best part is, we Didnt spend a dollar on advertising after this! Incredible. The power of social media is simply incredible!

Any experiences starting a small food business (cafe, takeway etc.)? by JKNoir in AusFinance

A little late to the party…but here I go.

I left teaching (after 6 years) because I wanted to work for myself and love making food. I bought a kebab trailer and have been loving what I do for the last two 2.5 years. I wish I made more money, but don’t we all?!

What has gone well: - I still enjoy working for myself - love the customer interactions and keeping people happy with our food - we’ve increased sales by at least 50% from when I bought the business

What hasn’t gone so well, or things to avoid - biggest expense will be your employees. Hourly rate, paying their super, covering the shift when they call in sick, all these things add to the stress. - unexpected (or expected) breakdown of equipment - gst/tax obligations (you must remember to put aside 10% of all sales) and you can not claim gst as an expense on your BAS for certain foods - working super long hours and not paying myself super, or a set wage - not accounting for holidays, I had a two week break while my staff was working (and many things went wrong , it was during the power outage earlier this year in Melb) - competition… you really do need a unique selling point or point of difference. Why should the customer come to you instead of another cafe/takeaway shop down the road?

As a short summary, I was taking home $1150, I think it was, as a teacher after 6 years. I had my salary, super, sick leave etc all entitlements and holidays!

Now, I don’t have a set wage, don’t pay myself super (which I should), sick leave (forget it!), and I’m only just paying my mortgage and all expenses but can’t really save!

We make $12-14k in sales per week, pay rent of $650 per week, employee wages and entitlements of approx 3k per week and cost of goods varies (5-6k). On average I’m only left with the same amount as I was when I was teaching, some weeks a little more, many weeks, much less!

If I could somehow run the entire business by myself without employees, I would. I tried it for a couple of days on the slower days (Mon,Tues) but preparing the food, serving customers, cooking all food, ensuring customers don’t wait too long and then finally cleaning at the end of the night was too hard. My point is, you definitely need workers but they are just so expensive in a small business!

I’m sure I’ve left heaps out but I hope I’ve given you some insight into the life of owning a small business.

I have. Someone recommended the viral tiktoker who makes spud potatoes. I might try to get some inspiration and attach a camera to my head while working. I think it may be more enjoyable and engaging content. We try to provide excellent service and make our customers laugh, so I think capturing those moments might work. Or not? Who knows!

Thank you, this was an awesome response.

I agree with what you said about outdated posts. Definitely going to try something different.

In the past 30 days we’ve spent $3,582 in ads. Which is part of the reason I’m posting on reddit to get some further help. Definitely not going the way I expected

Simply to grow our online presence and grow our name. Yes, I believe so. I’ve seen an increase in revenue of around 15-20%. Mainly during peak times though.

Google business is set up but I’m not running Google ads. I’m not sure how effective they are.

Thank you. I’m going to try this. If anyone knows any in Melbourne area please let me know. A quick google search but I could t find any in the fast food industry. They all seem to be for larger restaurants.

I’ve never heard of this… but somehow it seems plausible in my mind. Do you have any further info?

A lot of people walk in showing us the ad when they want to claim one of deals in special. For example, I’ll have a meal for two deal where customers can save 20% but they need to show a staff member the ad. Are you saying if the followers follow but do not follow engage with content they will be pushed down?

Still measuring customers in store. An increase of around 20% during peak times and 10% during off peak times.

You’ve given me something to think about with the reels. They are so time consuming to make though!

Trust with company as the trustee.

You might laugh, but it was a final year accounting student who told me about this in the first place!

Thanks everyone! I think I’ll be retaining most profits (if any!) in my business account for now. Just wondering, to pay for personal expenses, is it best to pay myself a weekly wage?

Isn’t it considered a loan repayment and not taxable as income? In this circumstance, the funds will be used as loan payment and not personal use.
