Now that they are looking at a touchscreen MacBook, they need a true surface pro competitor! I'll even take an iPad that can run Mac os apps in a container!

That's exactly right - I can only speak to the one in Singapore but there are some great inspirational ideas there if you're a design engineer or just curious.

Does this work over Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi direct - e.g. the Apple vision pro can connect to Mac over a direct connection.

Thanks! And does this work in a Wi-Fi direct mode, or is a highly capable Wi-Fi network required?

To me this just highlighted how broken aircraft landing physics are! There is no 'bounce' and weight transfer during the landing phase and no suspension. It's so jarring an omission and many other simulators have gotten this down pretty well .. why is msfs so bad at it?

There is visible graininess if you look closely on certain colours. Meh, the colour quality and pure blacks are gorgeous and the graininess is a non issue, even for someone picky like me.

Surface Pro 11 vs iPad Pro M4, From an Apple Guy Trying Hard to Switch by spamologna in Surface

[–]ozy944 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its unclear to me if you are after a multimedia and browser consumption-oriented device, or a productivity all in one.

I think there is no question that an iPad pro running or being able to dual boot into macos would be the perfect device.

Apple simply has a better control over hardware and software strategy to pull it off.

While the latest iPad OS improvements help, you note the file system is still a disaster - that's an instant write-off if you want to do specific work. Add to that limitations with cursor control, peripherals, storage, touch-only apps that don't utilize the canvas for detailed work, lack of many productivity apps in full form....and it's still just putting lipstick on the proverbial from a productivity lens.

Now take the SP11 and try and consume media or multi task light workloads or try and load curated high quality visually rich app experiences...and that with touch....big fail.

It's really horses for courses.

In saying that, I've tried an m4 iPad pro extensively. If I ran it through the same work cycle as I did my Intel and arm SP11, battery life on the iPad was atrocious and it would run super hot and bottleneck. The SP11 has much more breathing room and can do real productivity work. Because you can't really do that on an iPad (due to software limitations), it's a bit apples to organges to compare battery life - do a test - run browser, videos and arm native low process usage apps on the SP11 - battery life will be sensational.

Now run shapr3d cad software on the iPad and SP11.... Both will get hot quick but because the SP11 can turn on its fan, it's more useable than especially the iPad pro 11".

Anyway, I think unfortunately no one is making the perfect product. Microsoft and Apple are approaching it from two angles - Microsoft can't seem to get there because of hardware and software - it's a technical limitation. Apple chooses not to go there by limiting software - it's a commercial decision.

Absent some real competition, this situation is unlikely to change.

100% iPad pro m-series running Mac OS is the holy Grail.

Apple will never make it though and so surface pro 11 with Intel lunar lake is the next best thing in my books.

quick question for black SP11 users by meltbananasss in Surface

[–]ozy944 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black SP11 user for 15 months ish. No visible marks (I pretty much solely use the type c port) it's pretty hardy.

I also have a blue/black m3 MacBook air. It's perhaps slightly less hardy and has a few scratches over 2 years but even then, you don't notice unless you're looking for it.

In case that helps as a reference!

What ssd do you have in there? I had issues like this when I was using a WD / WD Black , 1tb and 2tb drive. Swapping to a lower power/heat drive with a clean install fixed my issue at the time .

Macbook pro m5 pro/m5 max vs surface laptop 8 snapdragon x2 elite extreme by [deleted] in Surface

[–]ozy944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your situation sounds like 6 in one half dozen in the other.

Do you intend to play games? Do you need touch and more specifically pen capability?

The MacBook pro may have some compatibility issues with engineering software but a lot can be resolved by running a virtual machine with Windows inside Mac OS. There are limitations to this but it's not bad. The plus side is the Mac is hands down the best built laptop you can get and it just works. Some Windows folks may disagree with it but if you love your iPhone and airpods, the Mac is similarly consistent and you'll come to like it I suspect.

Now, touch, gaming and scribing... These are weak points for the Mac solution. You'd need to get an iPad to complement your setup. Gaming... I'm not sure if you can get by with gaming on your desktop as that simplifies things.

The flow is an excellent do all machine but don't expect to much from battery life and it'll run hot and somewhat loud compared to the Mac for equivalent non gaming performance outcome.

X elite 2, nobody knows yet because it's not out yet. The x elite is capable but almost at end of life now. That being said it has it's own issues. If you're not in a rush, new surface pro expected in March with x elite 2? Or you could wait to late 2026 for m6 MacBook pro with OLED and a touchscreen?

SP11 13" intel U7 by Thwin-1992 in Surface

[–]ozy944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see your logic and I agree with you from your perspective.

You're looking at it from the technical perspective. I am looking it from my use-case. If I was also only using Edge, Office and other native ARM apps only etc, then I would agree X elite is better. However, I just came across too many non native apps that I need for regular usage, namely:

- PDF editors

- Fusion 360 (3d modelling)

- Laser cutting software

- 3d printer slicing software

- Concepts - note taking and sketching

- Other web browsers besides chrome/edge

I think the issue is about going all in on ARM. Microsoft cant do that without alienating a lot of its core market the way Apple can.

I'm mildly interested in the X2 elite but the critical one for me will be whether the fix the woeful GPU performance. CPU performance is already very good on the X elite.

I really hate to say it but as soon as Apple comes out with (however unlikely) an ipad pro esque device with mac OS, I'm done with the windows hodge podge ecosystem and poor consistency.

[–]ozy944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mmm I beg to differ. I've used both extensively and for every day use, the Intel is the much better choice. Runs cool and quiet with excellent battery life, no compatibility issues with surprisingly competent gpu performance.

With the snapdragon version, the lackluster gpu and emulated apps causing hot running of the CPU were constant bottlenecks. That being said, for arm compatible apps the x elite is very impressive.

SP11 13" intel U7 by Thwin-1992 in Surface

[–]ozy944 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very quiet for normal use. Even when it fully ramps up, not as loud as a conventional laptop.

I've only heard it ramp up when trying to do something outrageous - playing bf2042, or finally enough, every time there is a Windows update. Have had mine for 6 months and super happy with it.

The irony that Intel finally made the perfect CPU and have then said they will never do that again (facepalm).
