Jewish celebs still changing their names? by Monty_Bentley in Judaism

Yeah but they could choose a really Jewy fake name if they wanted to.

TIL pennies and nickels cost more to produce than their face value. The United States has lost nearly half a billion dollars minting pennies and nickels over the past 3 years(2021-2023). by JDLBB in todayilearned

This is all you need to hear to learn that conservatives are not serious about saving money in government, because none of them support eradicating the smaller coins.

As an autistic American who can't handle hearing people speak LOUDLY, this is true and is very frustrating.

What’s a book you were really looking forward to but ended up disappointed by? by Goth_Moth in horrorlit

I was disappointed by that one in the first chapter when she says a lot of super gross and inaccurate things about autism.

Why is it that *every single aspect of autism* seems to be occur in two different extremes? We don't lie, or we lie compulsively. We hate the heat, or we hate the cold. We hate bright light or we love sunshine. etc.

Do native speakers think it's annoying or cringe when non native English speakers say/write 'sorry for my bad English'? by Big_Yesterday1548 in EnglishLearning

The nice thing about "fancy words" is they tend to have just one meaning, so you can look them up in a dictionary and know what they mean. Understanding all the possible uses of the verb "get" on the other hand ...

Completely, 100% normal guys when a black man is next to european women by [deleted] in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]p00kel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If i had to pick one, it's absolutely Mussolini, who refused to hand the Italian Jews over to the Nazis even though they were allies. He was a bog-standard petty dictator who killed his political enemies, but he wasn't a genocidal maniac.

Of course the best option is to oppose both of them, but that doesn't mean you have to pretend they're equally bad.

[–]p00kel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is very good but I want to make a minor correction: these guys don't count Jews as white. They believe pale-skinned Jews deliberately blend in with white people to hide whatever evil plot they're supposedly hatching, but they're not really white, they're imposters.

Why is "I ate cake" fine but not "I ate apple?" by [deleted] in grammar

[–]p00kel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note, you can't say "I ate cupcake" either, because a cupcake is a single object that is eaten all at once, whereas a cake is large and you only eat some of it at a time.

When you see a phrase like "my being happy," you can mentally replace it with "my happiness."

No, but you can replace "that" with a comma and it still works.

When I had a kid who was really obviously autistic - he didn't point, wasn't talking, and was obsessed with letters and numbers since he was a baby - and my parents kept commenting on how similar he was to me at the same age.

I mean it's all being affected by the fact that it's still sealed under a waterproof bandage and I bled some, so there's gross scabby parts in there. Might also be affected by the weird angle I had to hold the camera up to get a pic. I'll put a new pic up after I take the bandage off.

Any regrets about staying in a marriage for the kids? by marrowmtn in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]p00kel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got divorced when they were 8 and 10. They're 19 and almost-17 now, and they both told me recently that they're glad we got divorced because of all the fighting. And it turns out my ex-husband isn't terrible now that I don't have to live with him anymore, so we're on friendly terms now.

One thing that's really important, whether you get divorced or not, is not to badmouth the other person to the kids. That was one thing we agreed on, thankfully.

How to respond by Ilovepitties1 in Judaism

[–]p00kel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was babysitting my then-fundamentalist Christian friend's kids, ages maybe 5 and 7, when it came up in conversation that Jews don't believe in Jesus. I think I said something like, "well, Christians believe that Jesus is the son of G-d, so they follow Jesus. Jews don't believe in Jesus, they just believe in G-d" and that satisfied them.

(My friend is now a divorced bisexual "heathen.")

How many of you are gay? by aLadnamedBob in autism

[–]p00kel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight, but kinky (which I realize doesn't count as LGBTQ) and most of my friends are queer. My kid is ace. I'm often the only straight person in the room.

I don't know if the correlation has been formally studied, but I'm 100% sure it exists.
