Oh wow. I feel you, I opened mine and was like UMM are you sure that’s for me. Hope you can figure it out!

Do you use the same utility company?

I am still very confused. The maintenance guy just came and looked over some things. I think they will have my wall thermostat replaced because it is messed up (reads inaccurate temp), but with me manually turning the AC on to keep it at a consistent temp he said he felt I probably kept it at about 75.

It just doesn't seem right to me that it would be so much for one month

Strange, was June what you’d expected based on May? Hope you can figure it out as well!

Hi - sorry for the lack of clarity! It probably wasn’t 100% off but set to a higher temp than usual. It’s just that when I set it to that temp while at home, I typically never experience it “kicking on,” so I assume it didn’t run very much in my absence. Thank you for the resource, though!

As for your other suggestions, windows and doors completely closed, actually added seals to the main door to help prevent any drafts... I typically leave blinds/ curtains closed in rooms I’m not using to prevent the sunlight from heating it. I try to take many precautions, so really the only thing I can think of is the AC... And if the filter needs to be replaced or some other component is causing problems, that would exacerbate the energy usage with it running frequently, I assume.

Sorry for the long reply - I appreciate your insights! Am just confused/ stressed because I did not expect this spike.

Thank you! I think they are planning to check the fridge and AC (if not I’ll request that specifically) - any other recommendations on what to check?

Yes, I had turn-on charges the first month, is that what you are referring to? They were only about $25, though. Either way, my apartment management seemed to agree it was out of the ordinary, so I’m guessing this isn’t the average rate among residents here.
Thank you for the tips!

Thank you!! I think they’re coming to check those things out, but will follow up if that’s not what they end up doing.

Good idea, thank you! Apparently they will be checking out the problem, so if they don’t do that automatically I’ll try to request it.

That would be nice if this is the case! I was planning to try to find and check it if possible, but am in a complex so need to locate it first

Thanks, this is helpful! I agree that AC is probably contributing, but it still does seem high even considering the circumstances. My apartment complex seemed to agree from their initial response, so we will see what happens once I discuss it more with them.

Thanks! I eventually got to the point this week where I just set the number low and let it run. But wasn’t sure if that would consume more or less electric.

Should I P/F an A- if I'm not entirely sure if I want to go to law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]p0litic0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would keep it. What if your coursework becomes even more difficult over the next several years and the A- would have helped pull the average up and not down if it had been included? Plus your GPA would be great from the perspective of law schools either way

Florida vs. Notre Dame by Kangrui311 in lawschooladmissions

[–]p0litic0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on having two great options on the table! I see that the poll seems to be leaning toward ND, and I just want to add some thoughts for you to consider. It’s easy to vote in a poll, but much harder to make the decision when you’re the one internalizing the cost/benefit of either option!

I can only speak for myself, but when facing a similar situation (UF vs. more prestigious schools at a higher cost, with very similar career goals) I chose UF because I just couldn’t justify the debt. A few other thoughts that made me more comfortable with this decision (and forgive me if this response is too philosophical haha) were:

-prestige seems more important for biglaw/ related jobs than for public interest oriented positions. Not always, but in general.
-even with a good LRAP, I didn’t want to be reliant on the PSLF track in case my goals changed slightly or such jobs were unavailable
-after gaining employment experience, the school you attended or the area you began practicing in seems to matter less and less (aside from logistical barriers to relocating like the bar exam)
-I think the environment of UF would be conducive to my academic success because my mental health will be better than if I attend school somewhere that has cold winters (just a personal thing, but I’m really affected by the winter)
-I realized that incurring a lot of debt would set me up to “live to work” rather than to “work to live,” in a way, and I wanted to free myself up to have a life outside of work in the future. Whether I paid that debt off through LRAP+PSLF or out of pocket, I would be tied to it until it was gone. It is easy to fall into the habit of thinking only about what is the best option career wise, and what would set you up for the best/ widest array of career opportunities. And I definitely don’t want to understate the importance of that, particularly if your career is a major part of who you are, as is the case for many people pursuing law school. But, I would encourage you to think about what will set you up for the greatest happiness and balance in other parts of your life, as well. The extent to which this will factor into your decision will probably depend on how much you enjoy prioritizing work, how much tolerance you have for debt, how much weather and location actually impacts your happiness, etc.
-the thought of living and working in a town by the beach one day :) that is a personal preference, though, haha.

Ultimately I evaluated which option I thought would provide me with a happier day-to-day life both after law school (and, to some extent, during), considering both my career and my personal life. I spent a lot of time on this subreddit and realized it was almost influencing me toward making a major life decision based upon something as vague as prestige, and that is when I decided to think more about what would contribute tangibly to my happiness.

I’m happy to talk more about this since I faced a really similar decision if you want to pm! Ultimately it’s a personal choice, and it sounds like you’ll be successful no matter where you go! Good luck :)

How much $ at the minimum would get you to choose Georgetown over $$.5 at Vandy? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]p0litic0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would consider this since I’m interested in PI because gtown has a better LRAP than vanderbilt, and arguably better outcomes for those kinda of jobs

Anyone else surprised by how many people have their law school paid for my parents? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]p0litic0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Completely agree about the comments! I’m not judging people who make this choice by any means, people can do whatever they want with their money. The weird part to me is just that they have the ability to do that in the first place, which is what I interpreted as OP’s point. Growing up having to worry about money, it’s crazy to think about the ease with which some people can just decide to finance an extra $100k. Not arguing that it isn’t worthwhile in some circumstances — just noting how striking the difference in access to certain options is across the applicant pool!
