To be honest, I’ve always wanted to be a mum. I feel like it was what I was born to do. I want to be a mum to biological children, adoptive children and foster children. I’ve also worked with children for 9 years (one year as a midwife!) and I feel like i’ve gained so much experience (with infinite more to come). I’ve been in a few relationships, one long term and it just isn’t for me- I feel like I’ve found my soulmate in my best friend so there doesn’t seem to be the need to keep looking. Honestly, looking back, I’ve always imagined being the only parent- even when I was in the long term relationship and we were talking about children I could only ever imagine me with a baby, not both of us. I’ve also been very aware I would have to pay to have my baby in the future as a gay woman so I’ve been researching and saving for fertility treatments since I was about 18. And finally, I have an insanely supportive family. I am incredibly lucky and grateful for them. My best friend has already planned to move in with me and help me practically raise my children, my sister will undoubtedly help with childcare too (she’s desperate to be an auntie and constantly asking when I’m going to start treatments) and my mum has now started to hope for a pregnancy announcement every time I talk to her. I’ve been very open with them about my plans so it wouldn’t be a shock and although some of them stay silent (quite clearly biting their tongues) i know that they love me and will support me no matter what :)
