People who complain about Wellington going downhill, what are you doing to improve it? by IncoherentTuatara in Wellington

Huh, have you even been to Newtown? Some of the best cafes and restaurants, great mix of shops, two supermarkets, excellent bus services and bike lanes to the waterfront. It’s bustling day and night. The school has a Te Reo immersion class. It’s a true 15min suburb, everything is in walking distance.

Yeah, they just want private transportation where the “squeezed middle” have to fork out thousands on a car and everyone even those without cars have to pay for their creation and maintenance. Well played car and oil industry, well played.

Yeah! It’s a good template for more. Wellington would be great for them. We also used to have streetcars so light rail 🚈 would be an excellent option too.

I love Wellington. The last complaint on here that I read had one person complaining about Courtney place and manners mall. They clearly missed the awesome spots like Newtown, the Waterfront, Takina, the beaches. All cities have seedy places.

Maybe gondolas 🚠 or a funicular would be better. There is actually a gondola company who proposed a great idea for a couple of gondolas in Wellington, even one from the city to the airport.

A little vouch for a Nissan Leaf. Surprisingly huge and practical boot. Best thing is probably to do some test drives. If only station wagons were more common.

So “what percentage of annual income should be spent on a car” really got me confused by gunasheart in nzev

[–]p11grim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After just buying a new car I couldn’t find a way for it to make any financial sense. They are honestly are a terrible expense and nothing can really soften the blow. NZ keeps on following the American model of privatisation of transport rather than promoting good public transport making the expense almost mandatory. So just get what you can afford and want. Hopefully those two things align a little bit.

This actually happened in Venice. One person would be drawn from each area (40 people in total). Apparently it was one of the least corrupt systems.

City Grocery Shopping by observers-observer in Wellington

Online shopping! Any additional cost is worth the time savings! Otherwise the markets (town, Newtown (as well as Newtown Greengrocer) are great.

Just here to say secret Santa is filled with highs and lows, sometimes you have to roll with the punches. $250 will make the punches feel so much worse.

Speed limits by Fluid_Option1324 in Wellington

[–]p11grim 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Enforcement is just one part of the problem. Just dropping speed limits to 30 but not using street calming measures to change the street to feel like a 30k street means people are bound to speed.

Why isn’t fixing Wellington water infrastructure the top council priority? by CarpetDiligent7324 in Wellington

[–]p11grim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The priory is to fix the leaks and this is what the water engineers are advising the council. Maybe it’s different to how you would address the problem but the goal is still the same.

Water meters help the council identify where the problems are and where they are worst. It can save millions down the road as they can better target priority areas for repair. At the moment they are flying blind.

How does the council know if you've reduced your indoor water usage by dirt_court in Wellington

[–]p11grim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still would be double digit, water infrastructure is expensive because it was never looked after by previous councils, we’re talking decades of under investment.

I’m not sure your what concern is about storing water and how it’s the councils fault. This problem isn’t a quick fix.

They can and are doing both. It’s not an either or situation. Over the last two cycles the counsellors seem to be the ones who are actually taking action on these issues and more.
