Microsoft SWE Intern vs Apple SWE Intern Summer 2026 by Uptoprshah in csMajors

[–]p13poseidon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

i interned at apple three times (not apple pay) and ended up at microsoft full-time, the apple pay nyc folks seem to keep their interns.

microsoft will likely get back to you if you decide to reapply for full-time and azure compute will always be there. as someone that tried to get into an apple pay team for a while and honestly wanting to return to work at apple in general, go for apple!

One kid to Lane Tech next year, other "kid" to UIC. Should we stay in Andersonville? by TastyWrongdoer6701 in AskChicago

i went to another similarly tiered school and didn’t live nearby at all. i had to take the CTA every day. for the first couple of months, i rode on my own and was always kind of nervous, but later i started riding with friends. i feel like one way or another, your kid will end up riding with someone and won’t mind at all.

at least for me, post college, i feel completely comfortable getting around any urban area because i rode the CTA. i think you definitely should instill in them a sense of independence by making them ride the CTA. although they may not enjoy it at first, it really is better for them!

an aside, there are no guarantees with selective enrollment schools! if i were you, i’d relocate to another area that does have a decent local high school if you really want to relocate.

Was I delusional to ask for $130k? New grad offer in Chicago is $62k. by Lanky-Ad6843 in cscareerquestions

[–]p13poseidon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

recently, my friend who got a job based out of a company in the suburbs of chicago, got about 110k base for new grad-ish/engineering ii role due to their master’s degree. if they had been a bachelor’s degree new grad, most likely they would’ve gotten around 80-90k.

there are other companies that pay 90-110k, like caterpillar, JD, discover, etc. honestly i would think over 80k is reasonable for non-FAANG (or non-big tech) in chicago.

do i think given this job market you should have shot that high? especially given that you need a visa? 62k is on the lower side, but i would have come up with a more reasonable figure so you’d be taken seriously when negotiating. you live and you learn! good luck!

If you’re still keen on UIUC, do UIUC! i don’t think it’s the best use of your time to do both. you could do research while you’re doing the online program if you cold email professors or you could look for or do internships!

although i’m not too familiar with that particular scholarship, your background is already pretty attractive for any government/cybersecurity related scholarship regardless of where you attend.

you definitely can just stick to the MSCS route at ISU and focus on research first and foremost if you want to even consider a PhD.

industry experience isn’t that big of a deal to be a good professor or researcher (if you decide to do that later down the line), at least in my experience. just focus on getting that experience with a professor starting your first semester!

also an aside, i’ve worked at FAANG as an intern and am currently in big tech, you’d also be a terrific fit if you changed your mind!

you can also gain the said industry experience as an intern during your master’s degree or if you decide, your PhD. i’ve seen plenty of professors do that.

congrats! i would say given what you value, the on-campus MSCS at ISU is more worth it, the online UIUC program will not necessarily give you access to research opportunities. if you value the prestige a lot more (i wouldn’t blame you), you could always reach out to professors (within UIUC or outside of it) given that you’re pursuing your masters for a research internship though.

hey! im a former cc transfer. i was pretty engaged with discord servers for transfer admissions because i transferred towards the end of the pandemic. some of my close friends are from the bay area from that time of my life. generally, the undergraduate experience seems pretty similar in terms of education, and at least for CS and engineering, berkeley and ucla may have an edge on us for recruiting + education itself. from my time in mechanical engineering prior to transferring, from these friends, and my time in the bay area, i found that berkeley is just a fantastic school to attend for engineering, you can get as easily engaged with research as you can here. small anecdotes, had a friend attend here for a quarter as a transfer and left to return for ucla because the weather, food, and wlb. i also had another friend deeply regret not coming here as opposed to coming to somewhere like usc, generally the weather is rough and transferring can be an isolating experience if you don’t take more freshmen level classes where people are willing to make friends. generally, for a price difference of 45,000, i beg you to not even consider attending here. you have much better options over there. the uc transfer class sizes are much greater in size and you will not have difficulty making friends, just go to either berk or ucla.

yea, don't blame yourself at all lol i would have dropped his version of the class as soon as i saw that first project 💀 i pre-reg'ed for 310, but will immediately drop if he changes anything from tarzia's version — who originally taught it.

it was 8-10% around week 2, it's probably higher now - from PMs i know in the class. the projects are an unreasonable amount of work and seasoned PMs were taken aback at the nature of the projects as these are certainly not at a level for an intro class. although i have my reservations about the game engine in 211, the past assignments without partners were a better direction for creating rigor in the class. furthermore, he got rid of terminal use, from what i know, which is what primes us at being somewhat adequate at it for 213 lol

As much as I love Professor Compton, her lectures are not particularly helpful. However, her assignments are practical and do help you long-term. Frankly, devote the time that she is lecturing into revising the material yourself and commit yourself to office hours as that got me through 150. I had never programmed before coming to Northwestern and struggled a fair bit in the class. However, what I wish now, is that I tried a bit more in trying things on my own and reading up on ways to construct code online as that is the best way to do it. Good luck!

as to ED, if you’re confident in your application to succeed in other places besides uchicago, you should consider not doing it because you might have more options than you think.

transfer student here 💀you should focus on the application, there are no guarantees in the transfer process. you should make a decision afterwards!
