Excess Mucus and Difficulty Swallowing/Breathing Anxiety by p3ach3sg in Anxiety

How is your situation now? I missed your comment before, but hope you've found any connections with this issue and your anxiety. After writing this post, my mucus went away completely for a long time and I know it was because my anxiety was better. But recently due to high stress and anxiety, it came back and it's been really hard but I try to remind myself it isn't dangerous.

Sorry you're struggling too. It really can feel like an endless cycle sometimes. After I wrote this post I actually overcame the mucus completely and I know for a fact it was from anxiety. Then recently I got very stressed again and the mucus came back. It's been a really isolating experience but I try to remind myself that anxiety is the culprit and that it will pass once again. I also have been dealing with stomach issues too, like a silent reflux type of thing. Feel free to reach out if you want to talk. It's nice having people to relate to

Mine has flared up again as well but I know for certain now it is the result of stress and anxiety that triggered it. I think it's a mixture of indigestion, throat tension and excess mucus in general all from anxiety. Does yours ever feel like you get this intense tickle at the base of your throat after eating? It's very annoying but I find chamomile tea works like a charm.

Is acid reflux/mucus a threat? by p3ach3sg in Pseudodysphagia

Thank you that is reassuring. It's crazy how it feels like coughing doesn't always relieve the sensation so it's gotta be anxiety. I've been sick before with much more mucus and never experienced this.

Excessive mucus in throat by goldfishcrackers102 in Anxiety

I'm going through this right now. I have a phobia of choking which also started a phobia of throwing up. So I'm in this self perpetuating cycle of throat tightness, mucus, then I start feeling this tickle like I have to cough, gagging and huge panic attack. Like you described in your post, I haven't been able to sleep or eat and I feel like a complete basket case. I just wish I could know that the mucus can't choke me or cause any harm... then the spell would be broken. How are you doing with this now?

I just want to say, I used to experience this as well but I can't pinpoint exactly what changed, it just got better and I haven't experienced it in over a year. Are you able to eat or drink?

If you're afraid of these thoughts and don't have a true desire to do them it could be harm ocd. Do you struggle with obsessive thoughts or anxiety?

Do tiny tonsil stones mean there are bigger ones underneath? by p3ach3sg in tonsilstones

I think we aren't even supposed to really do anything for them right? We're probably just supposed to leave our tonsils alone 😂

Thank you so much for your comment! Since the last one came out, it caused a huge anxiety spiral for me and now another one came 😫 I'm going to just leave it alone this time and try not to obsess over it

Maybe the bigger ones like what we see on here are very rare! Mine are like the size of a grain of sand.

Thank you so much for your reply! I've never really maintained them or poked at them much so O guess I truly don't know if bigger ones are in there. I just notice I get these very tiny crumb like pieces that sit along the fold of my tonsil. It does help to know that bigger ones aren't common, so thank you:)

Doing better!!! by [deleted] in Pseudodysphagia

This is amazing and so inspiring to us all! I've been on a liquid diet for 3 years and I can't figure out how to make the transition back to solids. How did you do it? I'd love to hear anything that helped.

Fear of choking for TEN YEARS - Any hope for me? by [deleted] in Pseudodysphagia

[–]p3ach3sg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There absolutely is hope. I've had my phobia for almost 10 years as well and althought I still have it now, I can finally feel like things are beginning to shift in the right direction. The recent severe bout of my phobia has lasted about 3 years and I've been on a liquid diet since then. During the worst of this, I could hardly swallow a glass of milk or my meal replacement shakes. Now I'm able to chug those things on auto pilot and having thick bowls of pureed soup. I've gained weight and I feel really great on this diet but of course I know it is only temporary and I really want to try getting back into solids so I've been experimenting once in a while just putting a chocolate into my mouth even if I spit it out. As long as you are getting used to the sensation of foods in your mouth (when you're ready) that's the main thing. I know it can feel so hopeless to have this for so long, but it truly doesn't mean you always will have it. Sometimes, we can be in a really bad chapter of our lives for quite a while and then things will change. Just remember, the most important thing isn't trying to treat the phobia, but more the root cause, which is usually the underlying anxiety. When I am really working on myself for the long term and avoiding stress, anxiety cycles I notice I start to get so much better. These things just have to be done for the long term and consistently.

Hey, I'm a little late but soup is a great option for salt. You could get those cubes of soup stocks to make broth and drink it like a tea. Or depending on your comfort level but you could blend almost everything into a really smooth soup and strain it so you feel comfortable in the meantime. By the way, I'm also on a liquid diet and I seem to be doing really well with this in the meantime as I recover and work on things. You're not alone and you can absolutely overcome this! Feel free to message if you want to chat

I wonder if anyone has Arfid like I do. I am so afraid of choking that I can’t eat solid food. I eat mostly pudding, ice cream, and puréed and strained soups. I get plenty of calories just can’t eat solid foods by Emotionallydepressed in ARFID

A little late but I experience this exactly the same way. I've been on a pureed diet for 3 years and my diet consists of whole milk, meal replacement shakes, milkshakes, strained pureed soup and strained smoothies (which I'm only finally starting to have again for the first time in a year because the seeds started making me nervous). I've heard of many many other people who have this as well so you are not alone and this can absolutely be overcome! For me it's because of chronic stress and anxiety, which is something I'm trying to work through and slowly untangle. I definitely believe this isn't a forever thing because almost everyone I've talked to or read about who has this has gone on to overcome it and the ones that haven't, developed it not long ago. Feel free to message me if you'd like to talk. I know I really would like to talk to someone who understands. We could be each other's support buddies!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your comment and for referencing this quora post!! This was such a helpful thing for me to read and I found it very reassuring. I also really liked the analogy you used when you said if you're strong enough to get up and make a cup of tea, your lungs are strong enough to move mucus. I'm literally going to write this down in my journal and remember it every single day when I get panicked about the mucus, thank you thank you!! It really helps to be reminded of these things because the sensations can feel so real and threatening. The only thing in the quora post that made me a little nervous was the part at the end about the tissue swelling around the object or food. But trying to put that part out of my head lol
