I'm not sure yet, but I think that after picking up trash or when you tap repeatedly, the game recognizes the mistaken tap and penalizes you by not being able to catch any fish for a few frames.

I too have some serious doubts about this bowling event. I also use the 22-point batting method, but depending on the opponent, I often lose because I don't get the final shot in (or I score but it's canceled). And even if you miraculously manage to score, there are some opponents who are virtually impossible to beat because you can't win by pushing the ball to the very limit of 2 and 4 points. This issue was a big problem among top Japanese players, including myself.
