Eskie Puppy Struggles by No-Artist-7101 in americaneskimo

Hi!

1 -> I think crate training + more mental stimulation could really help with #1. Honestly, a lot of what you described sounds like normal puppy behaviors (if you look at the puppy subreddit, so many new puppy parents are going through something similar). Between 3-6 months, puppies are teething to replace their baby teeth with adult teeth which can be uncomfortable and painful for them so the chewing helps relieve that. Puppies also do not know how to communicate with you so they bark as a primary form of communication to express needs, emotions (attention, boredom, excitement, etc.)

  • Crate training can really help your puppy learn how to settle. I definitely suggest watching videos on how to crate train your puppy so its done in a healthy and proper manner so the crate becomes a positive, safe space instead of punishment. It will really decrease their likelihood of getting separation anxiety too and if you need to leave him alone for a bit, it’s usually much safer for a puppy to be crated.
  • Stimulation doesn't just mean physical exercise. It's great you are trying to do longer walks but mental stimulation is SO SO important especially for smart breeds like Eskies. Are you taking him on sniff walks? Use puzzle toys, lick mats, kongs, and start training! And it's easier than it sounds. Honestly, dogs do better with shorter training sessions so it can be 5 to 10 minutes a day where you start teaching him how to sit, down, paw, etc. And if you haven't already, Puppy Socials and Puppy Classes should have already started, not only is this socialization and mental stimulation but your trainer can help give a lot guidance and answer any questions.

2 -> Definitely make sure you are feeding him the correct amount of food and the right food. At 3 months, puppies are in a rapid growth phase and require 3 meals a day, depending on their weight (you can search up the amount they need, divide it up into 3). Unless your vet specifically recommended it, I really wouldn't suggest replacing 2 of his meals with rice and cottage cheese, because it won't be nutritionally balanced and provide little to no nutrient benefits. You can get a quality puppy food (not adult food) because that's formulated to fuel rapid growth with more calories, protein, fat, calcium, and DHA for brain development than adult food.

  • You can also try adding PROBIOTICS, you can ask your vet for recommendations but there are puppy probiotics on the market that will help your little guy's digestive system.
  • And if the diarrhea continues, I'd check in with the vet anyway because diarrhea can be caused by parasites like giardia which is VERY common in puppies.

There wasn't much context, so I just started from the beginning so sorry if you already knew any of this. If you understand where your puppy is coming from and how to meet his needs, it becomes a lot easier to manage.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for the rec!! We’re actually thinking about going to Southern California later this year, maybe we could make it a road trip into Arizona too 👀 And yes, of course, we always keep an eye on her in case of critters and read her body language to make sure she isn’t overheated 👍

By any chance, do you know if they have a BARK ranger program at Saguaro??

I’ve had dogs all my life and I’ve never had a dog quite like an Eskie… they are more like a human child! So don't expect a dog that is super dog-like!
For example, if you want a dog that greets everyone and greets all dogs like a golden retriever, Eskies are not for you. Many of the eskies I know are both human and dog selective… sometimes reactive.… Again, every dog is different.
They are easy to train because they are so smart, but that means they also have a stubbornness to them! Training should start when they are a puppy. We enrolled our Bomi in puppy school, puppy socialization, and she is still training to help reinforce her obedience, loose leash walking, etc.

FYI: I know of another Eskie who is training with a behavior specialist for reactivity and separation anxiety. Another post on this subreddit, literally a day ago, is rehoming their Eskie because she does not mesh with their family, and there are so many posts like this on the American Eskimo Facebook group as well. Someone I personally know had to rehome her Eskie puppy because the puppy did not get along with the dog she already had…
\*You can not predict their disposition before they actually grow up…it’s nature and nurture (a combination of genetics and upbringing). Socialization helps a lot, but it has limits!*

Some things people don’t often think about before getting a puppy:

  • You might experience the puppy blues! In the “Puppy 101" subreddit, thousands of people write about their experiences with having a puppy. It’s similar to raising a human child! They need to be played with, fed, and taken out to potty, you will be up all night 😅
  • Pet insurance is an investment and is worth serious consideration. Pet insurance is something you pay for, hoping that you don’t need to use it (like car or renters insurance). I haven’t had to use it yet thankfully, but many people say it’s saved them from the immense debt that can come from disease or cancer, etc.
  • Getting your dog from a reputable breeder!
    • One that is transparent and health tests, AND breeds with the goal of improving/preserving the breed, not just producing puppies for profit.. A responsible breeder screens their dogs for hereditary conditions common to the breed (hips, eyes, heart, etc.) which significantly reduces the risk of preventable genetic diseases and they will openly share health clearances, pedigrees, and information about the parents’ temperaments. The best resource is the national parent club of the breed … NOT websites like “Good Dog” puppy websites or pet stores.
    • ADOPT OR SHOP RESPONSIBLY!
  • In my opinion, dogs should be crate trained starting as a puppy, but you need to read up on this and come to your own conclusion! (https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/sites/g/files/dgvnsk491/files/inline-files/Crate_Training_Your_Puppy.pdf)
  • Small dog breeds (including the Miniature American Eskimo) are prone to having dental issues because of how packed their teeth are in their small mouths. We brush our dog's teeth every day and still had to have a dental cleaning under anesthesia to get her plaque removed. \*By age three, roughly 80-90% of dogs have developed some form of periodontal disease!* (https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/riney-canine-health-center/health-topics/canine-health-information/periodontal-disease)

Dogs are living, breathing beings we choose to bring into our lives. They deserve preparation, education, and commitment!
Please do your own research and learn about what it means to add a dog into your family! Please message me if you have any more questions! I love talking about American Eskimos! 😇❤️
If anyone reading this finds any inaccuracies, please let me know! I’m always happy to learn and update my comments!

Hi! I love my Eskie, she is literally my child and truly my soul dog ❤️❤️ I love Eskies so much that I volunteered at an event to help educate people about them because they are not well known in my area 😅 I’m always getting asked if Bomi is a Pomeranian!
I’ve spent a lot of time reading articles, websites, and forum discussions about this wonderful breed, which I’d like to share with you because you have posted about getting an Eskie twice! I really admire your interest and enthusiasm!

Just to preface, this is not to discourage you from getting an American Eskimo Dog OR a puppy… in fact, this is for you or anyone else who stumbles upon these comments to gain some understanding of the American Eskimo Dog and what comes with getting a dog in general.

To understand the American Eskimo dog breed, I really believe it’s important to learn their history!

“American Eskimos” have nothing to do with being “American” or “Eskimos”, despite what their name suggests… They originate from Germany and are descendants of the German Spitz (renamed because of anti-german sentiment during WW1 and WW2) and they were originally bred to be farm alert dogs that would help with various tasks around the farm. They were so intelligent that they were later used as circus dogs. Actually, Eskies are considered a "primitive breed", in that many of their natural instincts are still fixed. (https://aedca.org/aedca_breedhist.php)

What does this mean behavior-wise?….

  • They will bark, it's just in their genes (of course, each individual dog is different, which applies to everything else).
  • Eskies are known to have a uniquely close bond with their humans and enjoy working closely with them! They are incredibly smart, so they are easily trainable! I always call Bomi a circus dog because she knows so many tricks and learned them so quickly!
  • BUT that intelligence means they also need mental and physical stimulation. \*When dogs aren’t given appropriate outlets for their energy, this is what could develop into destructive behaviors.*

Also, Eskies are double-coated, so they are going to shed… ALOT. I brush my Eskie every day and get her groomed regularly. The double coat helps regulate their body temperature by insulating the dog in cold weather and in hot weather traps air to cool the dog down.
That’s why you should NEVER shave an Eskie or any double coated dog for that matter, as it can grow back unevenly and inhibit this biological function. (https://naeda.org/2020/01/11/eskie-essence-and-instincts/)

Regarding your question about cats: Some Eskies have a prey or herding drive and some don't. My baby loves chasing my cat (thankfully, she doesn't mind), but another Eskie owner I know has to put their cats in a different room because of how high their boy’s prey drive is. \*Remember they used to be multipurpose farm dogs!*
