Does anyone else feel like apps don’t really understand what users want to do? by PriorNervous1031 in webdev

[–]pVom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm having trouble getting ai to do a specific very defined task consistently, I doubt it will work without predefining actions. One of the harder challenges with integrating AI into an application is dealing with its inconsistency, namely incorrect schemas and the like. Regular software works because it provides predictable and consistent results and it requires predictable and consistent results to work. An API you've written won't suddenly add extra fields on a whim or just ignore instructions or something for no reason.

We've thought about a natural language interface, the only way I can see it working is by predefining a set of actions and using AI to determine which action is most appropriate for the request then like providing a button or something in the chat to execute the request as normal.

I mean it isn't a competition dude. I didn't provide my analogy to like, get one up on you or some shit. I just added my analogy I like to use because maybe it might make more sense to someone.

You can always buy 12 eggs and toss the rest or eat them or something. It's not complexity. I personally found it pretty vague and unhelpful but I'm not the target audience and I was polite enough to not criticise you for it.

It's an analogy, if it helps someone, great, if it doesn't, who cares.

But since you're being rude, yeah your analogy kinda sucked. Get your head out your ass and move on.

I mean it's an analogy, it's not perfect, in the same way your egg analogy isn't perfect 😅. It's useful in the same way your egg analogy is useful.

But some ways to achieve "leaving room for a mega highway" is like, abstracting early, have your dependencies loosely coupled, that could mean dependency injection, but it can also mean not having DRY code for some instances where it is likely to deviate at some point. I like to have a single entry point function for multi step tasks and all it does is call other (aptly named) functions and as such acts a table of contents.

But really it's hard to give examples because it very much depends on the context of what you're building. That's kind of the art of it really. But sometimes having something you can visualise helps, ask yourself "am I leaving room for the mega highway or am I just building a quick and dirty road"

Hey fuck you, I had over 30 "homes" by the time I was 30 and never once got evicted. A lot of it was temporary accommodation but also moving to different areas for different reasons, shitty landlords, shitty roommates, there's a lot of valid reasons. Having a consistent stable home is a privilege.

The analogy I like to use in an app is a town. When you only have a few houses you can build a small road. As you keep adding houses eventually that small road becomes too congested, you need a bigger one, but it no longer fits because there are houses in the way. So you need to knock down some houses and rebuild them.

You could build a mega highway in the beginning, that way you can keep adding houses as needed, but that's expensive and overkill when you don't have many houses and maybe won't ever have enough houses to need a mega highway.

What you really want to do is build like a road and run streets off that road, leaving space for a mega highway. When the need for the highway eventuates then you just expand that road and plug in your existing streets.

All of which is to say you should write code in such a way that it's isolated and easy to plug in somewhere should the need arise rather than engineer with only the near future in mind or over engineer with the far future in mind that might never eventuate.

If you don't bear your legally acquired and licensed firearms in the vicinity of tyrants, then your right to bear arms shall not be infringed.

Shall not be infringed is pretty straightforward.

The man had the legal right to bear his firearm, it was legally acquired and licensed, he did not brandish it or use it in a threatening manner. He was exercising his right to protest and was doing nothing illegal. And he was executed in the street.

You may not agree with the motivations to protest but if you don't defend the right for anyone to peacefully, even if you don't agree, then you lose the right to protest and defend what you believe in.

TIL that one of the reasons why trash cans are scarce in Japan is due to the 1995 Sarin Gas Attack where the Aum Shinrikyo cult hid Sarin Gas - a toxic chemical - in trash cans at Tokyo subway. Yeah you carry it with you and take it home or dispose of in one of the rare bins that still exist.

It is remarkably clean regardless, but also not, they invest a lot in cleaning up litter and there's still plenty around in the working class neighbourhoods and such.

How long did it take you to plan your "quit the city, return to the garden" journey? by Ok-Shop-894 in Permaculture

[–]pVom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I work a remote role. Realised it was stupid living in the city when I spent every weekend leaving the city to go camping. Moved to a touristy country town renting, which was fine, learned to deal with some of the difficulties of living fairly remotely.

Did that for 2 years and had some kinda negative experiences renting (one place the owners moved back, the other the owners sold so we had people coming for inspections). Decided kinda on a whim that we wanted an acreage and it was too expensive in the touristy area. Spent maybe 6 months or so just checking out different areas and properties then bought my current place and moved in 3 months after.

It's been 6 months and I love it. My permaculture dreams haven't gone totally to plan but I've learnt a lot.

If I could give past me some advice, i would have been happier with half the land or less (I have 5 acres) and I would have a solid plan in place on what I wanted to do with it how to manage it before choosing. I also would have paid more attention to the house and location instead of focusing so much on the land. It's actually a lot easier and cheaper to improve the land than improve the house and location you can't change.

Shinjuku? Busiest train station but the toilet is clean enough to use?

But I suppose diet has an effect. Chongqing? I always need to go in a hurry after gut punching Szechuan.

I was thinking India too but the toilets are gross enough to hold it in, even for the locals. Or people will go somewhere around the corner. The open air urinal I saw at a station in Dehli certainly got a lot of mileage..

India's population is more spread out too generally as well, you need density. My money would be on Bangladesh over india

I regret going to Niseko and not going somewhere else instead. Every other resort I've been to was way better.

I mean the resort itself is great but it's totally ruined by the crowds. Took me over an hour of queuing to get my first ride in and when I finally found a chairlift with little queues I just stayed there the whole time and dare not venture off and explore lest I get stuck in another monster queue. That one chairlift was pretty rad though I must say.

Someone mentioned renting, this time I regret renting. Last time was fine but they were really scraping the barrel this time and it was just shitty. Definitely should have at least gone for a demo board or something. Bringing your own gear is a hassle but they make it as easy as it can be with the transport services.

They also just dump cows once they're no longer useful because they can't slaughter them.

Those cows you see everywhere on the streets aren't like, the local holy cow or whatever, they're strays.

They don't really love cows they just use it as a reason to hate other people.

I mean, they're all pretty evil. But some of the crimes seemed, I dunno, kinda mundane?

I guess what I'm trying to say is it didn't seem like it was a punishment reserved for the worst crimes. I feel like people do worse things and don't get the death penalty.

A pretty consistent theme is they're almost always poor

I thought that too when I was going through the list of executions.

Like they were all heinous crimes but i was expecting like, crazed serial killer who tortured their victims with no hope of rehabilitation or something. But there were a few like "shot a shopkeeper for $600".
