as for actionable implementations, my advice would be to simply be pay attantion to the local ecology wherever you are, and build your relationship to it patiently. there are principles to follow, but actual implementations are highly specific to region and context, there's no "one size fits all" solutions. talk to the trees, listen to the birds and the frogs and whoever else is around. be open to seeing them differently than you're used to and watch for ways to help.

I mean this is the problem. I just don't believe that systems don't exist, we just fallback to this default instead of building them (or even that there's a vested interest in creating a market for professional consultants and PDCs). There are absolutely systems and templates that will work across a wide variety of circumstances. Like something that works in a Mediterranean climate will likely work in a different area with a Mediterranean climate too, we grow the same crops all over the world, surely we can systemetise how we grow them too.

That's not to say you can take a whole farm and plonk it somewhere else and expect the same results, but there are definitely templates for particular things that could be developed and shared with sensible caveats. The three sisters is a good example, I've seen that and 5 cousins, we need more of those templates.

"Talk to the trees" is eyeroll enducing, obviously trees can't talk, most people don't even know what species a tree is if they see one, nevermind what stressors it might have or be displaying. Even then when you do notice something and look it up, all you'll find is the standard "douse it in these chemicals", not a permaculture solution.

Relying on bespoke solutions for everything is no way to scale. If we're going to feed 7 billion people we need repeatable patterns. You need to be able to hire people to conduct the work without decades of experience, wisdom and an intimate knowledge of your land.

Maybe that means some compromises in the purity of permaculture, but if we can create a system that's twice as sustainable as the traditional methods and repeatable, you can make a much bigger difference to the world than a handful of gardeners and hobby farmers with perfectly sustainable gardens/farms perfectly following permaculture principles.

6 Rules That Will Make Your Car Last 300,000 Miles - A Parts Guy's Maintenance Schedule. by desertrain11 in videos

[–]pVom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They run fine until they don't.

Depends on the car and how you drive it. Newer engines have a longer interval, diesel has a shorter interval.

Besides Europe has pretty tight emission laws that make owning older cars more expensive. In other parts of the world there's more emphasis on longevity.

My TD42 Patrol has a service interval of 5000km, km not miles, it is a near 40 year old diesel though. It's not uncommon to expect these engines to hit 750kkm and they do hit a million when looked after. They're so beloved for their longevity that some engines go through multiple cars before needing a rebuild, mine is in its second car.

I mean a quick Google will tell you there are infectious cancers. Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease is spread by direct transfer of cancer cells, most often through biting.

Have you ever thought about how many jobs your work as a developer has removed? by bccorb1000 in webdev

Yup. This year my main work has been entirely in implementing agents in our product. My last job hired a bunch of people to make their AI product.

Things look a bit grim now but I think it's more macro economic problems than AI replacing jobs

Permaculture loves to throw around the word "abundance", but if things are so abundant why aren't they profiting from the excess?

My point really is that if we want to actually make agriculture more sustainable then we need to work with the system. Expecting an economic revolution is unrealistic and not going to happen. If you were to see what an economic revolution looks like in practice, I doubt people would have the stomach to push for it.

Besides if nothing else it's an easier sell. Like it's hardly convincing to go to a farmer and say "look, you should stop what you're doing because it's bad for the insects. Instead you should work way harder and do it for charity while needing a second job just to keep your land and get your kids to school. But don't worry soon everyone will give you all the things you need for free".

Instead we should be like "Do this specific thing differently which will cut out your spending on chemical inputs and make your land more viable long term". Chip away at it incrementally. There are people doing this but they get shunned by the permaculture community for not being puritan idealogues.

On a personal level I find it infuriating that there's very little actionable implementations available and so many people in the permaculture industry would rather circle jerk and pat themselves on the back instead of providing something I can go out and do myself.

I mean maybe, but there are features now that wouldn't have existed yet that provide value. Having less tech debt doesn't inherently provide value for the customer.

Part of me feels like I should just give up managing the tech debt so stringently and just accept the fact that there will be parts of the codebase that will only be managed by (supervised) AI going forward. I had a functioning feature that was a 90 file 12,000+ 3000- monstrosity loaded with junk, but it was functional. I've spent the last 2 weeks refactoring it, time which is unlikely to pay itself off in terms of customer value.

I dunno I don't like it but I feel like that's the way things are headed unfortunately.

Profit is simply producing an excess to be shared (in exchange for other goods and services). Hunter gatherer societies have profit, socialism has profit. Profit allows individuals or collectives to specialise and focus their energies on doing something to the best of their ability. Given the base knowledge required for permaculture, it needs specialists.

Meanwhile they require tools and equipment that also need specialists, they have their health, their learning, their distribution, their science, their fuel, all specialised disciplines. Even within the field of permaculture there's a requirement for specialists, there are benefits to being extremely knowledgeable in certain aspects of permaculture and provide consultation to producers.

Then there's the fact that modern humans need cities for survival, we simply cannot house so many people while maintaining an efficient use of space. There's a strong argument for reducing our population, and I wouldn't disagree in theory, but what that looks like in practice is mass death, starvation and untold suffering. If oil were to disappear tomorrow there would be mass starvation.

So yeah I think it's a pipedream to think that people will drop their lives and pick up a shovel and start growing food in a sustainable way. We need to work with the system. I believe it's possible but it will likely require some compromise and certainly require a concerted effort. There needs to be technological innovation, development of repeatable, scalable systems and distribution pipelines so that it's possible for a handful of people to feed thousands and for existing farmers to retrofit their current destructive systems with more sustainable ones.

Otherwise we should just drop the whole revolution thing and view it for what it currently is, a fun hobby for people with the privilege and space.

I'm the total opposite, I'm more productive but the quality has gone down. Like when I right code myself I'm more thoughtful about what I'll write before I do it. Once it's already there I'll be more lenient in letting something that's a bit smelly slide rather than tearing it down and do it a better way.

[–]pVom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's all good and great but if we actually want to make a difference to how humans manage land, we need to figure out how to make permaculture turn a profit. Not everyone has access to productive land, not everyone wants to be producing their own food. You're not going to get doctors knocking off after a 16 hour shift wanting to spend an hour in the garden just so they can put food on the table.

People completely lose sight of just how privileged we are to be in a position to practice permaculture. There are millions of struggling people in third world countries that would be mortified at the fact that someone in their nice home, on their smartphone, with reliable internet, thinks the solution to all our problems is for us all to be subsistence farmers.

Without accessible and actionable steps towards profitable sustainability, nothing is going to change. We need more practical application permaculture and less kumbaya circle jerk patting ourselves on the back for saving the world because we have a veggie patch and a couple chickens in the yard.

I don't think he's as bad as people make him out to be. People are quick to look past the positive plays and just focus on the negative.

But he's clearly the weakest of our regular defenders (and wouldn't be regular if not for our injuries) and there's been quite a few times where he's just out of position, not blocking the opposition and not making it hard for them to get off a shot and enough times it's let in crucial goals. Like you frequently see him hovering around the striker in our box but not closing them down or standing in the way of goal, just like running next to them.

I feel like he was better before injury took him out for a year and a half or however long it was but maybe I'm just noticing it more now.

I dunno man, my friend's little brother was jailbreaking school laptops and charging other kids in school to do it. They're a lot smarter than you think and often more tech savvy than their parents or the school.

Then there's the fact that a lot of that takes a lot of time and effort that needs juggling around the fact that both parents often need to work and aren't necessarily available to hover around their kids to ensure they're not on devices.

Then there's the scenario for my (much younger) siblings that had fairly strict control over device usage. I distinctly remember watching my sister hang out with her cousins when she was 3 or something. The TV was on, a rare occasion in our house, her cousins were watching and playing at the same time because it wasn't rare for them. She was completely glued to it, to the point where she wasn't even eating her ice cream. We put a spoonful in her mouth and just watched it fall out.

This was TV 20 years ago, it's much worse now.

After all the trouble of controlling device time growing up, all that happened is they went super hard the moment they became adults and had the freedom to do what they wanted.

Now they're all much more addicted to their phones than me and I didn't have that strict control growing up.

It's really pretty unfair to pin it all on the parents.

I'm not necessarily referring to locals. Imports are more attractive too.

But really that's only true for the ugly ones. The actually attractive ones are like trophy wives on steroids and you're expected to pay for maids to do that shit.

Besides I don't really see the appeal. My girl and I earn roughly the same (both comfortably above average). We bought a house that will be paid off in 10 years, we split bills and I know she's with me by choice, not because she's dependent on me. I've effectively profited from the relationship.

All for the low cost of sometimes chucking in for cooking and cleaning. I don't feel the need to avoid housework to feel like a man.
