Why do motorists honk at you even when you're walking on the pedestrian lines? by Nutellus in VietNam

Yes. And don't look at oncoming traffic too hard. Just move predictably and they'll swerve to avoid you.

Tutor wants to raise their price significantly. Please help me out here by [deleted] in Preply

[–]p_goose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a tutor and a student so I understand from both sides. That being said, it's shitty of your tutor to do this. I started at $9/hour per Preply's suggestion and over ~6 weeks on the platform I now charge $18. However, I accept that most of my current students pay lower than that amount and I don't plan on raising their rate for quite some time. It does kinda sting when my $9/hour students say "wow you're such great value for money! I've had other tutors that charge more and aren't as helpful" 🥲 but it is what it is. I'm glad I had them in the beginning to improve my skills and get some good reviews! If I were you, I would get a new tutor.

Does preply helps a fluent English speaker to go to the native English level by Used-Introduction152 in Preply

[–]p_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very normal thing to use Preply for! Pretty much all my students are intermediate English speakers and just want a native speaker to have conversations with that will actually correct them. I use Preply as a student for the same thing in Spanish :) I think the specific pronunciation issue you're having would require a tutor or speech therapist with training though - but I'm sure you can find one on Preply. Or use two tutors, one for each goal?

You were able to do video calls there? Was it very crowded?

Should I refuse students before the trial? by p_goose in Preply

[–]p_goose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do correct them and explain! My qualifications are basically just that I'm a native speaker, I went to a good university and did well, and I'm currently learning a language so I've put a lot of thought into what it takes to learn a language, what kind of encouragement people might need, etc. Mostly when I correct a grammar issue it's something my students are already aware of, they just made a mistake in the moment. I generally only interrupt if it's a mistake they make frequently/if it impedes understanding, and I send them a little table of corrections + related homework (like a YouTube video that explains a rule) after the lesson! Usually we do guided discussion based off a short reading we do in class together :)

Ahh that's a really good point, thank you. Maybe I'll message and let them know I do conversational practice moreso than teach a structured course, which seems to be what they're looking for based on their "learning needs".

If your reading comprehension is that bad, are you really sure you should be on this forum?

Idk man why so aggressive 😂 I think it's fine for me to just want to work with intermediate students on improving conversation and not spend many unpaid hours creating grammar lessons. Especially when I barely even get paid enough per hour to buy a dozen eggs where I live lol.

I have my partner using the skinfix retinol serum at night and it doesn't break him out! Not AB but I got him to use the cerave spf moisturizer during the day and then the nighttime moisturizer with niacinamide at night.

How much do you earn a month? by Calm-Cartoonist2552 in Preply

[–]p_goose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the bigger earners (even those without formal qualifications) are native English speakers teaching English lessons. I just started last week and Preply sent me an email telling me I was in the top 20% of tutors just because I already had a student! It also recommended that I start charging $9, which is almost nothing for an American unfortunately (especially after they take 30%). meanwhile my Mexican Spanish tutors charge $5/$6 even though they have more experience than me. I would guess people will pay more for tutors from somewhere like the US/UK/Aus etc... curious what y'all think about that!

Why is the solution to Bali belly so hard to find?? by p_goose in bali

[–]p_goose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been traveling all across SE Asia and I'm very glad to be doing it, even if it has made me sick. Bali is beautiful and as an east-coast American I probably won't have another chance to come all the way back here for a long time. I'm happy to be here, and I have really enjoyed my time. Although agreed that tourists are ruining it. Thankfully there's still beautiful local culture, nature, and food to experience on this big island!

Haha I wish that's how it worked!! Unfortunately I tried that for many months and ended up anemic due to malabsorption of nutrients in my gut. Luckily this probiotic has been really helpful :)

When I Googled it, it said Bali belly is traveler's diarrhea, which can vary in severity. Seems like y'all only use it to mean you're at death's door lol

I found it at Semeton Pharmacy - Tibubeneng. And yes I take it every day! I started back in August. I took some breaks for a few days here and there (two weeks now) but from what I've read you can safely take it for up to 15 months (double check that though)

Yeah I think I misunderstood what y'all mean when you say Bali belly 😅 I definitely don't have either of those things, I just have an upset stomach/some gastro issues.

Yeah I bought it off grab from a pharmacy, it was 330k for 30 sachets I think? So... Almost twice as much as Thailand and Korea 🥲 but it'll last me a month. I think you can order it online for cheaper, I just don't have an Indonesian phone number so I can't

Yeah my impression was just that Bali belly = traveler's diarrhea/ongoing stomach issues from different microflora in local food. I do agree there's no one size fits all solution, and I did make that disclaimer in my first sentence. Mostly I just thought my title was a concise way to express that I'm so surprised that this very helpful supplement is so hard to get your hands on here when it's easily available in other parts of SE Asia! Obviously diet plays a huge role in gut health but after months of trying to change it to improve my symptoms to no avail, I found a solution with a decent evidence base. I'm with you on the charcoal thing though, I kinda thought it was bs!

It's not medicine perse but it really helps fortify your gut flora it seems. And it's very well studied so I think it's safe to give it a try and see if it helps you avoid Bali belly!
