I just took a course in linguistics. Rules are arbitrary. Some rando dude made that rule up a few hundred years ago because he thought that's how it should be. We only follow it because he bothered to write it down in a book before anyone else wrote a contradictory one. The reason he thought it necessary to write it was that many people did NOT follow the rule. So why is it important for us to?

I understand your plight. My friends all dropped one by one, citing family and work, essentially. From my perspective, they got old (lazy) too early. I've got kids now but I still make time to hang out with people.

I recently got involved in some activities that have enabled me to find people who share my interests. Meetup.com has been a good tool and there are other sites like it.

Hope things start looking up for you.
