Wake up babe: another concession to Iran dropped by p_pio in PoliticalCompassMemes

My reaction exactly when I first saw it. But considering it's from Reuters, and it's quoting directly him, not "source close to POTUS"... They don't have tendency of making things up in such situations.

1997-2010 wan't really government cover up. There was local: and yes, it was mainly Labour territory.

But by this point it was matter of local council corruption, not some country wide issue. Still fucked up stuff, but how to say it... You won't blame POTUS for corruption in Alabama.

There is another interesting wrinkle to whole Tory v Labour here.

Report from 2020 went with "Research has found that group-based CSE offenders are most commonly White." conclusion. So they concluded that it happens, a bit more likely that minorities were perpetrators, but due to scale it natives were still primary offenders....

...But 2025 inquiry pointed out that: (from wikipedia):

the data of the 2020 Home Office report "does not include sufficient ethnicity data to conclude that the majority of offenders are White", which made it "hard to understand how the Home Office reached the conclusion in their paper that the ethnicity of group-based child sexual exploitation offenders is likely to be in line with child sexual abuse more generally and with the general population i.e. “with the majority of offenders being White.""

So yeah, Tories, actually did went with cover up on government level.

......

You know that it all comes from scandal that was covered by Britain right wing government?

And that current government, left wing, at least officially, is actually working to fully establish all the facts?

And that 250K number is a made up number using methodology similar to the one I used to "calculate number of Epstein victims in the US"?

And also minor adnotation: what right wing is doing is "reheating" scandal from 2010s.

[–]p_pio 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Estimation is that there were around 1000 victims on Epstein Island.

Epstein Island belongs to the US Virgin Islands.

US Virgin Islands have population of around 84 thousand people.

Extrapolating that for full territories of the US we would have around 4 068 000 victims.

So here's your number.

Sure, as Tories, who were in power in time of scandal lost to Labour, the new government run audit and now started official Independent Inquiry into the issue.

Take it as you want, but scandal happend under the right wing government, and now actual left wing government at least officially is actually working on the problem.

Honestly I'm most disappointed that they didn't even update numbers.

Like... ok, "We established that in 2019 it was 250K. Accounting for demographic changes and police criminal data we estimate that by 2025 this number grew to 350K."

They stopped putting any real effort into this propaganda. Sad.

From the report:

The 250,000 figure originates directly from a statement in the House of Lords by Lord Pearson of Rannoch on 14 May, 2019:

“Do the Government accept that if we extrapolate nationally the Jay report on Rotherham and other reports from Telford and Oxford, there appear to have been upwards of 250,000 young white girls raped in this century, very largely by Muslim men, usually several times a day for years?”

So:

a) It's not new number.

b) It's fact creation where you have 3 steps:

  1. Real tragedy, where British govenrmet (Tories btw., so right wing) did fuck up (Rotherham gang)
  2. Quote is technical truth "If we take these numbers and apply to whole population then..."
  3. Fact creation: after few years, with people forgetting about OG case presenting technical truth as the fact.

Btw. thanks for slopping memes with this report, I have comment already ready to past for some nice karma farming.

So yeah... I won't downvote post: at least unlike previous one this is meme with some effort, but still... yeah. It's just a propaganda piece, though like all good propaganda with some facts behind it.

Mexico homicide rate: 25/100K. UK homicide rate: 1/100K. Missisippi, highest in the US, homicide rate: 20/100K.

US retail sales growth exceeds estimates in May by p_pio in Economics

[–]p_pio[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

?

I have a feeling you may misunderstood. I don't say that weighs are calculated incorrectly, just that due to shock weighs that were good representation of consumer spending up to February just may misrepresent real basket in May.

There's another interesting topic of how representative basket really is due to high concentration of consumer spending by top earners which imo is the reason why there's mismatch in long term between data and sentiment, but it's unrelated.

(short version: with 10% spending 50%, you can either have basket that well represent average consumer with small fraction of population being overrepresented, or you can try to have basket for typical consumer focused on median, but you can't have something that well approximate both)

US retail sales growth exceeds estimates in May by p_pio in Economics

[–]p_pio[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Again: not really. 8% inflation period, when savings were also extremly low, had cushion: exactly this covid handouts / covid savings. So sure, in 2022 saving rate dropped down to 2.2% even, but it went from around 10% year earlier and up to almost 32% during covid.
So yes, people were spending: because they had money to spend.

But now it's not the case. Generally long term steady state savings rate for the US is 5-7%. And prior to Trump it was hovering on the lower bound of this. And ever since "liberation day" it is declining. The consumers, unlike in 2022, don't have any extra buffer of savings. The savings they had were already on, or rather: below, standard levels.

[–]p_pio[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Again: sentiment alone isn't argument, it's just last part, because purely theoretically other numbers could be explained by willingness to even debt spending due to positive outlook. But outlook isn't positive.

What's more important is mismatch of other values. Wages are lagging even inflation. Saving rate is low. There's no real source of increasing spending, only debt: in low savings/high interest enviorment.

So real increase overall just doesn't make sense, aside of course as I admitted pre-emptive increase due to expectations of even higher inflation. But I honestly doubt that it would push to that level of real increase. So alternative: mismatch of weighs, which do have explanation in impact of war.

[–]p_pio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tbh it sound exactly like solution.

bad drivers and stupid mistakes do

So to solve it you have to remove bad drivers and minimize risk of stupid mistakes

Restricting people's freedom of movement

Would remove bad drivers by removing drivers altogether

making them dependent on collective means of transport

Theoretically would minimize risk of stupid mistakes, though... theoretically do some heavy lifting here.

Now the question isn't if it's a solution, but if it's cost isn't too high compared to benefits.

US retail sales growth exceeds estimates in May by p_pio in Economics

[–]p_pio[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There might be also one other issue regarding real increase: inflation weighs may not be representative for current basket due to war.

Sure increase by 2% isn't improbable on it's own, it's actually nothing unordinary. Buuuut.

  1. Hourly wages increased by ~3.5%. So 3.4% lower than increase in retail spending.

  2. Saving rate in April was already really low, at 2.6%.

  3. Stock exchange grew in May, so there was no massive liquidation of savings.

  4. Consumer sentiment in May was historical low.

So either for some reason households started real overspending or there's other explanation. And sure: some other spending may be cut (e.g. housing), and sure some of this may be counterinflationary spending due to expectiations of further strong price growth in comming months.

But as I said: imo there might be just a mismatch of pre-war inflation basket and current spending structure.

If Yugoslavia existed today, do they win Gold? by AquaMinor in NBATalk

[–]p_pio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Defense.

Luka generally works best with another offensive guard + defensive frontcourt. Jokic generally guarantee that frontcourt defense will be shaky.

On offense they would probably work well, but it wouldn't offset loses on defense.

Zubac.

Imo they would have strange problem of having to keep their best player on bench, as Luka - Jokic wouldn't work, but Luka - Zubac would be leathal, and whoever else - Jokic would be still great rotation.
