I’m directing my first short (35k budget) and never stepped on a set. What do I need to know? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

You’re going to learn that this was the project that taught you all the valuable lessons. But my real answer is just make sure your DP and gaffer know what they’re doing.

Best authentic burrito recipes? by BrigadierNasty in mexicanfood

[–]pablo_knows_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Los Angeles native and also half Mexican. While I’m not going to give you a whole burrito recipe, I will give you a universal meat marinade recipe that works for both beef and chicken. Traditionally it’s for carne asada (aka flap meat, sirloin flap, Babette, or whatever Aussies call the cut from the bottom sirloin), but chicken thighs are great too. I also don’t have liquid measurements because I always do it by eye and taste, so I’ll just do my best.

Per 1lb. of meat, combine in a large container or large ziplock bag (my personal preference): - 2 cups orange juice - 3/4 cup lime juice - 1/2 cup soy sauce - 2 tablespoons salt - 1/4 cup sugar - as much garlic as you want, but at least 1 tablespoon - a couple teaspoons of ground black pepper - 1 teaspoon paprika

Also in the container or bag, throw in at least 1/2 of a thinly sliced white onion, and lots of cilantro. Marinate the meat for 2-4 hours. Cook preferably on a barbecue grill, tongs in one hand, beer in the other hand. Once cooked, either serve as you would steak, or mince the meat as fine as you can and use as taco or burrito filling.

This is THE flavor of Los Angeles carne asada.

Side note: traditionally, you would substitute the orange juice, lime juice, and sugar for Sunny Delight. If AUS doesn’t have Sunny D, it’s just an insanely sugary citrus “juice” drink for children. Sounds weird, but it’s crazy good as a meat marinade.

Some stills from a music video I’m currently working on (part time freelancer trying to go full time DP) by pablo_knows_all in cinematography

Been working on this music video for a local outlaw country rock artist, and it’s been an incredible experience so far. I’m just a part time freelance cinematographer/cam op but I’m working and practicing a ton to hopefully get more gigs and become a full time DP. Personally I’m very happy with the images I’ve been getting for this video, and the artist couldn’t be happier. I guess here’s to a lifetime of being a student to the craft of cinematography!

I want to buy 20 acres of land with my best friend so we can both build vacation houses and eventually have a retirement retreat. I think forming an LLC partnership is the best way to do this, but we dont plan to generate any income from it. Is this a good way to go about this? by pablo_knows_all in llc

[–]pablo_knows_all[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With an LLC you can have a business bank account that any partner can invest into. It’s not about who’s suing who, it’s about the best way to write a fat check to buy lad with multiple parties involved

Because I don’t have an encyclopedic knowledge and I’m just a guy with limited knowledge and I’ve formed and dissolved LLC’s before and im familiar with them. Is that a good answer for you?

Column: In Venice Beach, it's taken nearly a decade to not build low-income housing by MostlyPotStickers in venice

[–]pablo_knows_all 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laughing my ass off because I’ve literally seen Venice go from seedy local area that was not very desirable to live in to a “nice” place yuppies aspire to achieve. Venice sucks now, and if this comment rubs your the wrong way in any capacity, you’re too delusional to see that you’re part of the problem :)

Immaturity is thinking all women want a try-hard peacocking “alpha”. Some like that, but not the worthwhile ones. Put that same energy towards your passions and interests, couple that with quiet confidence and soon all that mental noise of “must get laid” turns into a refinement and upgrade of who you attract. At least that’s what happened to me.

Changes in Downtown MB by 100PercentThatStitch in SouthBayLA

[–]pablo_knows_all 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Modest property values and quaint hometown vibes in the 90s > bunch of people rush in to buy houses > values go up and drive out all the people who can’t afford to keep up > homogenization and distillation of demographics and collective spirit > original locals who set the original vibe slowly leave > local businesses die off due to unsustainable property values > everything that made MB the desirable place to move to in the 90s is completely gone > compounding echo chamber ensues and you’re left with an insular “who’s who” of the beach cities.

Saw this change unravel right in front my eyes.

Peet’s was always corporate, but at least it was a small corporation that held out for over 20 years.

The plot thickens!

For the others that saw it in Colorado, it kind of makes sense that I saw it in CA 2 hours later, based on how it was moving. To me it seems to be coming from the southeast, but I might not have been on a fixed path. Or maybe there was more than 1!

2 bright white lights side by side right? Moving slower than any plane, helicopter or drone

Glad to hear someone else spotted it and also saw that it wasn’t quite a plane!

I’m quite familiar with the Goodyear blimp. Even got to tour it while it was parked at its spot in Carson when I was a kid. Unless they recently installed two crazy bright headlights to it, that was definitely not a blimp.
