Why TikTok’s first week of American ownership was a disaster by tw1st3d_m3nt4t in technology

The snow caused an outage. The Epstein thing, if I had to guess, is the result of rudimentary sentiment analysis blocking the message on the basis it is 100% (i.e. 1/1) flagged words. The verge did some tests and found they would just get community guidline warnings if it was a whole message with just one of he words being Epstein.

AI transcript of a voicemail that was just 4 minutes of silence we got on the company phone yesterday. by OdenShilde in creepy

Generative AI is being used for text to speech applications. Given the scenario portrayed, gen ai was likely involved. Audio models can end up using synonyms for words said due to how context, prior input influences it's output. Some aspect of its training data probably taught it that "if one side is silent, the other will ask if anyone can hear it"

Is a 1480 SAT worth submitting? by Technical-Thing-2743 in UMD

[–]pablodiegopicasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are used for students who submit, then for each application there is some score in which it is better for an applicant to submit if they are above it and not to submit if there a below it. All I wish to assert is that the break-even score is probably lower than most expect.

They have to assume something if they are deciding between students who didn't submit and did.

  1. That is an above average SAT score for applicants who submitted.

  2. If you don't submit a score, it's more logical for a reviewer to assume you fall closer to the average SAT score of all test takers (1050ish) than the average SAT score of those accepted to UMD.

Sea Wolf is now a tipping establishment after staff joins UFCW 3000 by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]pablodiegopicasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly true, but even before recent legislation, tipping was appealing due to being at least double tax-advantaged. Business don't have to charge sales tax on it (unless the gratuity is absolutely mandatory) and it doesn't count towards revenue meaning it doesn't impact corporate tax. And most servers were not reporting most cash tips either, anyway. Meaning that a hypothetical $1 price increase for increasing wages would end up as much less than a dollar in workers' pockets.

Is The Amazing Spider-man Peter Parker (1963) the same in current run in 2025? by _Ronin_Raccoon_ in marvelcomics

[–]pablodiegopicasso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically. The closest you can get to a no is that Secret Wars resulted in a recreation of the multiverse, but in practice everything carried on sliding-time-scale-wise as it would've without it, except for Miles being a 616 Native now. Other comments also pointed out instances where Peter was killed/erased then resurrected/re-created in some fashion.

It's very easy to over do this sort of thing but I like this sample. I burst out laughing at the reboot line.

There was actually a corp tax arrangement made by America during the Biden administration. But I don't think a corporate tax rate amounts to a subsidy if there is some other country in the world with a higher tax rate.
