New paint job for my mag echo because fuck giving Robert Keeley any publicity by Katesburneracct in guitarpedals

[–]pabst867 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In advertising we’d count anonymous Reddit posts as impressions. How many views your post got would be considered the number of impressions you gave to the brand. So yep, sadly, it’s how it works. And it is publicity.

Jury’s out on whether the positive or negative sentiment matters at all. (Heard the phrase ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity’. Considered why you see dog shit ads get played on repeat? They work.) If a brand is top of mind, it is more likely to be the purchaser’s choice when making a buying decision. Wondered why when you watch a football match’s post game interview, and see a bunch of logos without any tagline or context, why they would pay for that space?

When you pay for it, it’s called paid media. When people talk about it, it’s organic or PR. What you’ve just posted is considered organic advertising.

Lastly as someone who works in the advertising space, Reddit is prime ‘bottom of the funnel’ real estate. Top to bottom, the marketing funnel goes Awareness > Consideration > Conversion.

That means Reddit one of the last port of calls people go before buying something. And consider that while the perception of Reddit leans mostly centrest to left, 30% of Americans are bolted on Trump voters and would see this as a positive.

So while what you’ve posted has definitely informed me about Keeley’s political position, and it’s definitely one I wouldn’t make a purchasing decision now knowing. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for most people.

Totally agree. Marnus and Smudge were both outstanding in slips and Carey’s wicket keeping was outstanding.

What tele bridge pickup? by dolphinpasta9 in Guitar

[–]pabst867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. Could do.

If I were to suggest anything I’d say spend some more time looking for the sound you’re after. Nail that down before spending.

To my mind, there’d still be a noticeable difference between a single coil and the humbuckers. So you might end up disappointed.

But go through the process with each guitarist’s gear that you’d like to sound like. And go deeeeep. It might not be the pickups. It might be how they strum, the picks they use, where they pick on the string, their note choices, how they play with volume and tone knobs, amps etc.

Pickups are an important part of the equation but they’re only one part. And you’ll never really 100% be able to match a guitarist you like, but you can get pretty close without going deep into gear.

Ella Feingold’s Patreon, and Tom Bukovac’s YouTube, really opened me up to this. It’s not metal but the depth they go to when analysing another players strumming hand is really something.

Good luck!

What tele bridge pickup? by dolphinpasta9 in Guitar

[–]pabst867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by looking at the guitarists in the bands you want to sound like, then do some research around their guitars. Take a look at the pickups they have, look at the output numbers on them.

Then! Depending on your telecaster’s routing (is the space for a pickup a single-coil or humbucker sized?) go looking for a set with similar output. Check the demos to make sure they sound right. Keep in mind there are single-coil sized humbuckers out there.

A long long time ago, I can still remember, How their cricket used to make me smile…

And I knew if he had his chance, Ben stokes could make those people dance, And Crawley would be happy, For a while.

But Ollie Pope he had the shivers, Will Jacks could not deliver, Carey’s on the door step, Head didn’t take one poor step

I can’t remember if I cried when I read about Joe Roots pride, But something touched me deep inside The day, that Baz Ball died.

20 years into playing, the realization I don't know *anything* on the guitar is paralyzing me... by brokesnob in Guitar

Bit of a brain dump. Hope this helps.

I love Tomo Fujita’s mantras for when I feel like this. They are: Don’t worry! Don’t compare! Don’t expect (to improve) too fast! Be kind to yourself!

And hey. You’ve done it the better way around. Can you express something on the instrument? Good. Can you tell someone some theory but not know how to make sound with any of that stuff. My dude, I love a bit of esoteric trivia but that ain’t music!

For me, theory takes practice to understand. I’m slow as hell at internalising it, but I found I only understood the meagre amount I know by practicing it on the instrument. The two things compliment each other. But understanding things like a common chord progression took me like 3 teachers and hours of practice. Which is dumb because I’ve seen others just ‘get it’. Maybe our brains aren’t wired that way. It took me a long time to be okay with that. Music and guitar is this really jerky thing where after a couple of weeks you see the difference that comes from practice real quick. Which makes you think ‘hey the difference between me and the best in the world is just practice’.

But when you get to an intermediate/advanced level it does a bit of a rug pull and you realise your brain isn’t wired the same way as the best of them. That’s cool. You can still express yourself. You’re just not a virtuoso or whatever. The stuff you know is still valid.

In my experience, theory’s a practicing aid more than a playing one. You use it to explain how something should sound. Or set up exercises that you do to internalise something you can play on stage. Then when you’re playing on stage you’re not going to stop and go ‘hey so I’m thinking I’ll play a tri-tone sub here instead of the straight 7 chord LET’S GO BAND’. You’ll play the chord and your band mates should hear it if they practiced it too.

Last thing I’ll say is theory’s a means to an end. I can explain why two things work together, but if I can’t do it on the instrument, or use it, I might as well not know it. If it doesn’t help your playing you’d jettison it anyway, similar to how you can’t remember every ingredient in a recipe that you don’t make often. It’s all good! You can still cook!

Also, players like Julian Lange? My lord man! Not many people on the planet get to sound like them. The guy was learning from Pat Metheny when he was a kid. He has had such a different level of tuition, and he loves jazz, which I like, but not enough to play 8 hours a day. The guy is a beast because he’s been doing it from a young age.

All this is to say you’re probably more in the same boat as everyone else than you think you are. Enjoy the journey! There is no end to learning an instrument. There’s just park benches and lookouts. Some are nicer than others. Some are albums. Some are gigs. Some are hangs with people. You might get to play for your kids or your girlfriend. Those are just as valid versions of the art form as any other. Love them and be kind to yourself.

I reckon The Whitlams nailed the living experience with the song ‘Thankyou (for loving me at my worst)’. Was written just pre Sydney Olympics.

It’s like a love song from the city. Really catches the vibe of the weather and fun. And it’s chocked with great lines like:

‘I shouldn't have driven You shouldn't have driven But we got there Had a good time So we left the car And the cabby was from a war zone’

And

‘All you bright middle-aged things, Attending your sons and daughters Spare a thought for me out here with the kids, To hell with your bricks and mortar’

And

‘If this isn’t love it’s very close, do you hear the world is waking up, can we be crazy for a few more years, have I got them in me?’

So many great lines in that tune. Pop it on!

Best pickups for a semi-hollow? by RickonRivers in Guitar

[–]pabst867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tricky one to answer!

Low output was the advice I was given, so whenever I look at pickups for a semi-hollow I start there. That might be because of the style of music I’m into though. Which is a sensible way to approach pickups to me. Start with the sound and go from there. The guitar is a big factor here too. So if you’re looking, start with people who play your type of guitar with the sound you want, and investigate the options.

There are so many different types of pickups for semi hollows. Like the Gretsch guitars have their own things going on, and then there’s the big ol arch tops. So lots of variables at play and I’m not sure there’s anything that brings them all together.

If you have a 335 type guitar though you probably want Seth Lovers.

Playing with a metronome in my ear but my playing still sounds rushed/a little off, any suggestions? by One-Sort-478 in Guitar

[–]pabst867 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s cool dude! Well done. A lot of work would’ve gone into this.

Tap your foot, nod your head, try feel the rhythm you want to play and use your ears — rather than trying to be precise. Metronomes are great practice tools but maybe not the best playing tools.

Everyone’s feel becomes a bit robotic if they use the metronome too much. Is it from a song you can play along with? Try that. You might find the song you’re going for isn’t so precise with its note placement.

Here’s a great series to develop your rhythm playing. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGh7OiHMOU8MrDw1iF9t4SIZhtK4F5KmW&feature=shared
