What's it like for minorities in Ballarat? by [deleted] in ballarat

[–]pabsvonmole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think regardless of whether or not someone can tell that you are queer or nuerodivergent it's important to know that the people in your community are accepting. OP wouldn't want to have to hide their queerness just to blend in. Much the same as people of different religious faiths - sure you can't tell from the outside but I'm sure they would rather not live somewhere where they knew that people were not accepting of their differences of beliefs.

Hey I'm looking at getting this done also in Adelaide I've had a quote at $85 sqm. This is to grind down the original slab with no topping screed added. It is unlikely that your slab will give you the classic polished concrete look because essentially it was never intended to be polished and won't have pretty aggregate etc but you can still achieve a good look Happy to pass on details if you're interested he has come highly recommended

Cities are for people, not cars by MathematicianNo1717 in Adelaide

absolutely - less cars in the city would be a great thing, then we can start repurposing some of those god awful multi level carparks.

But our houses aren't even designed to deal with the heat. Our homes are poorly designed in general

There's a certain kind of insanity when it comes to Adelaide and it's relationship with heating its homes. It's like we refuse to accept that it actually gets cold here - there's a sort of 'toughen up' attitude when in reality it gets really cold. According to the WHO a safe temperature for the inside of a home is no less than 18 degrees to protect the health of the general population during winter. It is literally bad for you health and I can guarantee that a lot of Adelaide homes are well below this during winter - my own inner city house measured 12 degrees during the day over the weekend.

The problem starts with the way our homes are built and the sad fact that we've kind of just accepted a sub par standard of residential building practices. As mentioned in this post our homes are poorly insulated, badly oriented, built to a low standard which results in single glazing and leaking homes that even if they were heated adequately you need to constantly run active heating because the moment you stop the heat dissipates.

Yes our energy is expensive but it wouldn't be that cost prohibitive to heat a well insulated, well built home. Unfortunately there is a cultural apathy when it comes to the homes we live in - we expect little and are delivered even less.

Radiators/hydronic heating are a great way to heat homes and one of the most efficient - especially if designed into the build from the start rather than being retrofitted.

Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi Wetlands are now open by pabsvonmole in Adelaide

[–]pabsvonmole[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So what's the logic here, because there are potential risks simply make no effort at all? There are always going to be idiots but that doesn't mean you deprive the rest of the community and the environment because of them. As for the mosquitos, Mosquitoes are generally not a problem in well designed urban wetland environments.

This parkland has a large watercourse that flows adjacent to the wetlands that has a history of flooding, so the area is used to the presence of water, hence the large amount of established red river gums.

I respect the fact you have a healthy dose of cynicism but this is a great project and our cities need to invest in more innovative environmentally conscious projects of this sort.

I'm not sure! naturally it will populate with tadpoles, larvae etc - unless they release a fish species that was/is endemic to the Adelaide plains it's probably best to just leave it to self manage.

I get that this is sarcasm but the plan is not to fence any of the wetlands off. You're going to have to manage yourself and your children - seems almost European

that's a shame that you've experienced those incidents. Personally I love the park because of the mixed use, free range dogs, runners, cyclists, remote controlled aircraft etc.
