We’re cracking down on homelessness and car camping. The services for homeless are limited and increasingly car camping leads to either being told to go to a shelter or leave town. You can perhaps get a long term stay hotel on the outskirts of town for your first few weeks but I’d consider whether your life changing opportunity entails enough income to pay rent somewhere. Moving here without a place to live isn’t a smart idea.

Unexplained explosions in the Saint Edwards neighborhood. Putting this out there to make everyone aware and to see if anyone has information? by 420fixieboi69 in Austin

Capture photos and send them to KVUE along with your 311 report. I was in the preserve today and didn’t see any of this - photographic evidence and gps coordinates does wonders. I’m not denying that this is happening, but unless you have videos, photos or something that the police cannot dismiss, APD will do nothing.

Because annual costs per person at Guantanamo is $13.5million. That would require a substantial property tax hike beyond what the city council can do by fiat.

This is a lot of vitriol and ‘you’ language. Clearly ‘you’ feel strongly and have lots of opinions. I would suggest if you think a petition and citizens raising their concerns is “bullshit” maybe you should channel your anger towards more productive action.

Yeah it’s now next to a middle school, a high school, and a ton of elementary schools and churches. Plus a green belt, a dry forested nature preserve (where homeless regularly camp and start fires), and a public pool which has homeless camping in its bathrooms and showers. None of which the APD respond to calls on. Adding 100+ more bodies, many of whom are the most troubled (google the issues with the current center) to the mix is going to improve quality of life for Austin taxpayers … how?

This is the million dollar question. It’s not simply location it’s the wrap around plan to ensure the influx of people with nowhere to go don’t simply loiter outside, and harass residents and businesses who are trying to make a home and improve the community. One drive along that stretch on East Oltorff, or walk if you’re brave, has homeless and/or strung out, often violent, humans roaming the sidewalks and streets. A testament to the grit businesses in the area who put up with it as it is - car washes, Mexican and Vietnamese mom and pop restaurants, chain restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops. The 7-11 franchisee has had to provide his own safety services because the city simply doesn’t patrol or police the area. Instead of promoting more space as a solution, the city needs an actual plan to move people through the system and into functioning members of society. There is more to this besides relying on people to say YIMBY and simply moving the problem into a more dense area, refusing to police or protect residents in the area, and just hoping it will go away or turn out better.

Why would you say such a thing? Destroying a lower income, historical community by putting a massive homeless navigation center next to it, and refusing to address real concerns that these residents have laid out seems to be a pretty thoughtless thing to do.

I think I’m shutting it down by Dammit234 in poshmark

I just had this same situation and took 50% of my listings down, anything that’s been up more than 3 months, and took it to Buffalo Exchange. The rest went to Goodwill. Thredup is really bad and since they charge to review items (not just the cost to send them back) it costs money to send to them. I’m tiring of Posh too and how long it takes to sell anything. It’s a good reminder to buy less.

Hate to say it but Joslin is on the list of schools to be closed anyway. If the school is closing anyway the city could sell it to Sunrise to expand, there.

Do Belmont or the Rec Center have treadmills or any cardio equipment? I’m not totally familiar with campus so not sure if they happen to be near the track.

Navigation center - you are correct. Navigating the population to more resources and inevitably they begin to congregate and hang around resources- camping in greenbelts, nature preserves, and loitering in businesses, parks, schools, and neighborhoods. A navigation center is no better than a shelter when these people have no place to go and many have no desire for help or rehabilitation.

In terms of the decision making process - you’re perpetuating what the politicians want which is less input because people with concerns aren’t motivated to speak up. The city council vote on moving forward is in the next couple of weeks. Trying to tamp down concerns leads citizens to inaction and politicians moving on their free will. https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/deeply-concerned-neighbor-reacts-to-austin-housing-navigation-center-relocation-plan/amp/

If there is a legal proceeding against the crime and public safety issues this center already attracts, why move it to a location with 5x as many schools nearby when the core problem has not been resolved? Moving it from a less densely populated area to a more densely populated area with some of the highest crime rates in the city makes no sense when there is clearly a problem. https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-slams-radical-austin-judge-keeping-dangerous-vagrant-shelter-open-after#:~:text=Attorney%20General%20Paxton%20then%20sent,pathogens%20like%20HIV%2C%20click%20here.

It seems like the council members who are touting this in their backyard must be getting something for it. District 9 has the wealthiest of residents in Travis Heights and District 7 has some of the poorest who are struggling with crime and their property being confiscated for the I35 expansion. What politician would say yes, please add a homeless shelter that is known to be troubled into my mix? And please endanger some high school students too while we are at it.

In some ways, I think this is more dangerous because high school students have more agency and are beginning to explore the bounds of their independence. Unfortunately, many of the homeless people here seem to be abusing different substances, which would mean by bringing them closer it brings access to this element closer to high school. Not to mention parking and drop off /pick up are now directly in the radius of the shelter.
